Angkor Wat (Khmer: អង្គរវត្ត or "Capital Temple") is a temple complex in Cambodia and the largest religious monument in the world, with site measuring 162.6 hectares (1,626,000 sq meters). It was originally constructed as a Hindu temple for the Khmer Empire, gradually transforming into a Buddhist temple toward the end of the 12th century. It was built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century in Yaśodharapura (Khmer: យសោធរបុរៈ, present-day Angkor), the capital of the Khmer Empire, as his state temple and eventual mausoleum. Breaking from the Shaiva tradition of previous kings, Angkor Wat was instead dedicated to Vishnu. As the best-preserved temple at the site, it is the only one to have remained a significant religious center since its foundation. The temple is at the top of the high classical style of Khmer architecture. It has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag, and it is the country's prime attraction for visitors.
Angkor Wat combines two basic plans of Khmer temple architecture: the temple-mountain and the later galleried temple. It is designed to represent Mount Meru, home of the devas in Hindu mythology: within a moat and an outer wall 3.6 kilometres (2.2 mi) long are three rectangular galleries, each raised above the next. At the centre of the temple stands a quincunx of towers. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Angkor Wat is oriented to the west; scholars are divided as to the significance of this. The temple is admired for the grandeur and harmony of the architecture, its extensive bas-reliefs, and for the numerous devatas adorning its walls.
Siem Reap (Khmer: ក្រុងសៀមរាប, pronounced [siəm riəp]; Thai: เสียมราฐ) is the capital city of Siem Reap Province in northwestern Cambodia, and a popular resort town as the gateway to Angkor region.
Siem Reap has colonial and Chinese-style architecture in the Old French Quarter, and around the Old Market. In the city, there are museums, traditional Apsara dance performances, a Cambodian cultural village, souvenir and handycraft shops, silk farms, rice-paddies in the countryside, fishing villages and a bird sanctuary near the Tonle Sap Lake.
Siem Reap today—being a popular tourist destination—has a large number of hotels, resorts, restaurants and businesses closely related to tourism. This is much owed to its proximity to the Angkor temples, the most popular tourist attraction in Cambodia.
The name "Siem Reap" can be translated to mean "Defeat of Siam" (siem in Khmer), and is commonly taken as a reference to an incident in the centuries-old conflict between the Siamese and Khmer kingdoms, although this is probably apocryphal. According to oral tradition, King Ang Chan (1516–1566) had named the town "Siem Reap", meaning "the defeat of Siam", after he repulsed an army sent to invade Cambodia by the Thai King Maha Chakkraphat in 1549. However, scholars consider this derivation to be simply a modern folk etymology, and maintain that the actual origin of the name is unknown.
Angkor (Khmer: អង្គរ, "Capital City") was the capital city of Khmer Empire, which flourished from approximately the 9th to 15th centuries. Angkor was a megacity supporting at least 0.1% of the global population during 1010-1220. The city houses the magnificent Angkor Wat, one of Cambodia's popular tourist attractions.
The word Angkor is derived from the Sanskrit nagara (नगर), meaning "city". The Angkorian period began in AD 802, when the Khmer Hindu monarch Jayavarman II declared himself a "universal monarch" and "god-king", and lasted until the late 14th century, first falling under Ayutthayan suzerainty in 1351. A Khmer rebellion against Siamese authority resulted in the 1431 sacking of Angkor by Ayutthaya, causing its population to migrate south to Longvek.
The ruins of Angkor are located amid forests and farmland north of the Great Lake (Tonlé Sap) and south of the Kulen Hills, near modern-day Siem Reap city (13°24′N, 103°51′E), in Siem Reap Province. The temples of the Angkor area number over one thousand, ranging in scale from nondescript piles of brick rubble scattered through rice fields to the Angkor Wat, said to be the world's largest single religious monument. Many of the temples at Angkor have been restored, and together, they comprise the most significant site of Khmer architecture. Visitors approach two million annually, and the entire expanse, including Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom is collectively protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The popularity of the site among tourists presents multiple challenges to the preservation of the ruins.

Sunrise At Angkor Wat Temple | Tourist Attraction in Siem Reap Cambodia
Location: Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Cambodia. This morning we woke up at 4 a.m. to see the sunrise at Angkor Wat. It was OK... To be completely honest, I think there are much better ways to spend your morning exploring the Angkor Temple complex. Sunrise at Angkor Wat is OVERRUN by tourist. Yes, we did contribute to the problem, but that's beside the point. When we showed up to Angkor Wat at 5 a.m. there were already TONS of people there. We weren't even able to get a seat on the far side of the pond. By the time the sun was rising, there were over 2,000 people watching the sunrise with us. The crowds were almost more impressive than the sunrise. Don't get me wrong, the sunrise over Angkor Wat is beautiful, but so is everything else at the Angkor Temple complex. I would suggest getting up ...

To see what we did during the rest of Day 1, you can watching this vlog: http://youtu.be/mUa7wXfSOTY We arrived in Siem Reap the night of November 8, 2014. We applied for visas on arrival, which cost USD $30 each. It was a very quick, easy process. Be sure to bring one passport photo to submit as part of your visa application! If you forget to bring one, we heard you can have one taken at the airport for $2.50. By the way, we used US dollars throughout our entire trip. Be sure to take lots of bills in smaller denominations! We woke up at...

Our second day in Siem Reap, Doug and I woke up at 4 a.m. to catch the sunrise at Angkor Wat. Afterwards, we hung around different cafes until our flight off to Bangkok. Angkor Wat costs $37 for a one day pass - tickets went up from $20 in 2017. To catch the sunrise, arrange a tuk tuk driver the day before to pick you up at 4:30 a.m. A tuk tuk for 4:30am to 1pm should cost $16-$20 USD. I have never wanted to look at temples longer than that. Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Cambodia March 26-29th, 2016 Bike Tour by Grasshopper Adventures = Worth it! The day started with sunrise at the entrance lake. We didn't get a great sunrise because it was cloudy, but got some good shots inside the complex near the small pond. It was really cool to see Angkor Wat by bike and even though it was hot, the bike-riding wind helped a lot. We biked to different temples, parked, walked around, had some fruit, then hit the trails again. How cool is it that we rode through some villages inside Angkor Wat?! People live there! It was hot! I don't recommend this time of year. Go in the fall or winter. Tomorrow (Day 3) has the Banteay Srei, often called the "Lady Temple". Check it out! Subscribe (please)!

It's my first time to see sunrise at Angkor wat temple in Siem Reap province in Cambodia. We have to get up at 4am traveling to the temple. The road is not quiet as there are people, especially tourists going to see the Sunrise every morning. We got there at around 4:30am, the sky is still dark and not so many tourists yet. There are more and more tourists come and crowded at around 5:45am. I was there in front of Angkor Wat temple at a small pond on the right of the temple walk way. I thought that only these amount of people at the right pond but i walked to the left pond after that. OMG!!! tourists are crowded on the left pond. The sun was not rising well that morning as it's overcast but it was great to see lots of tourists coming. Bravo Cambodia!!! Bravo Angkor Wat temple!! Thank you ...

We've had an incredible week in Siem Reap, visiting Angkor Wat and a lot of the other nearby temples. There are however a lot of things I wish I knew before visiting Angkor Wat, so I've put together this video to help your trip become as amazing as possible! As I say in the video, the best time to visit the temples is early in the morning. It is colder, and less crowded. However, a lot of other people also get up early, so you better structure your route in a way opposite of the crowds. Here are my suggested routs: 1. Start with the gates of Angkor Thom at 7am, then go to Bayon at 7:30, then to the nearby temples after that. 2. Start with Angkor Wat at sunrise, but go to the East end of the temple (everyone else are at the West side of Angkor Wat. After Angkor Wat, quickly go to Ta Phro...
Travel video about destination Angkor Wat in Cambodia. For many centuries a cultural and historic treasure lay hidden amid the dense jungles of Cambodia: Angkor Wat. This huge temple site was once completely surrounded by water-filled ditches that protected the sanctuary from the noise of the once busy city of Angkor. To date one thousand seven hundred artistic reliefs have been counted in Angkor Wat. Most of them contain religious illustrations derived from Indian mythology. Interestingly, the historic figure of the god-like king, Suryavarman The Second appears to combine with the Hindu god, Vishnu. Khmer culture was strongly influenced by numerous Indian tribes and peoples who had immigrated to Cambodia in the first millennium. Liberation from the long domination of the Chinese-influence...
We recently completed a three day tour of the Temples of Angkor and along the way we learned some valuable things that we're sharing in the form of advice, tips and a guide for visiting the temples along with our personal favorite experiences. Tip number one is to get a three day pass as opposed to just a a one day pass. There are a lot of fascinating temples to explore aside from just Angkor Wat and trying to cram that all into one chaotic day is a bad idea. Instead go for a three day pass and take your time to experience the temples at a more leisurely pace.
