A grandson of the late Cambodian film maker, Vann Chan, screened on Sunday a trailer for a documentary about Cambodian cinema in the 1960s and 70s at the Freer Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institute, in Washington DC.
Davy Chou, maker of the new film "Golden Slumbers,'' showed film clips and told the audience about the history of Cambodia's golden age of cinema and of the success of his grandfather's work at Vann Chan Film Production. He spoke about an array of Cambodian screen stars and filmmakers. Davy Chou, whose parents are Cambodian and who grew up in France, hopes to complete the documentary before the end of the year.
Chou says he was shocked when he realized how his grandfather's legacy is being forgotten. Nearly all of the film stars from that era were killed by the Khmer Rouge. Many cinemas become karaoke parlors, hotels or were taken over by squatters. And a lady occupying his grandparent's home said to him and his mother "Oh I saw those films but we threw them away!"

For the 3rd season of CAMBOFEST: Film and Video Festival of Cambodia (www.cambofest.com), CamboFest, Cambodia founder J Rosette and his staff rediscovered and successfully resurrected 'THE ROYAL', a vintage Cambodian movie house which had been shut down and partly destroyed during the Cambodian civil war and subsequent Khmer Rouge regime. (see pix @ http://cameradomoviesandmedia.blogspot.com/2009/12/stills-video-and-other-content-from.html)
The 'Royal' had been briefly used again as a venue from 1985-1988, when it was finally shuttered...until the CamboFest event, the old cinema house had lain dormant, unused, and forgotten by all but a few local Cambodian old timers.

Chou Davy, 27, hopes later this year to release his documentary about Cambodian cinema in the 1960s and 1970s, creating a record of a culture the Khmer Rouge regime of Pol Pot helped to destroy. Chou Davy lives in Paris and is the grandson of Vann Chan, a well-known filmmaker in Phnom Penh in the 1960s. 'Golden Slumber' will be shown in Cambodia, France, the U.S. and other countries, Chou Davy said during a recent interview in Washington.

"Golden Slumbers," a much-anticipated documentary on Cambodian cinema, explores the loss of the country's film industry to war. It played in Long Beach in May as part of the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. Producer Chou Davy, who grew up in France and whose grandfather was a producer of that era, wanted to learn more about the movies that kept so many Cambodians entertained through the 1960s and into the war years. He says the Long Beach screening was a major test of the film's authenticity. VOA Khmer's Cheang Sophinarath reports.

Cinema in Cambodia began in the 1950s, and many films were being screened in theaters throughout the country by the 1960s, which are regarded as the "golden age". After a decline during the Khmer Rouge regime, competition from video and television has meant that the Cambodian film industry is a small one.
As early as the 1920s, documentary films were shot in Cambodia by foreign filmmakers. By the 1930s, King Norodom Sihanouk had a desire for films and dreamed of stardom before he was chosen to be King by the French, this gave the King second thoughts about his dream to become an actor or director, but he kept this thought in mind. The first Cambodian-made films were made in the 1950s by filmmakers who had studied overseas. They included Roeum Sophon, Ieu Pannakar and Sun Bun Ly. The United States Information Service held training workshops during this era and provided equipment as well. One film from this time was Dan Prean Lbas Prich, or Footprints of the Hunter, made by off-duty Cambodian military personnel using American equipment and containing footage of Cambodian hill tribes.

Cambodia (
i/kæmˈboʊdiə/;Khmer: ព្រះរាជាណាចក្រកម្ពុជា, Kampuchea, IPA: [kɑmˈpuˈciə]), officially known as the Kingdom of Cambodia, is a country located in the southern portion of the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. With a total landmass of 181,035 square kilometres (69,898 sq mi), it is bordered by Thailand to the northwest, Laos to the northeast, Vietnam to the east, and the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest.
With a population of over 14.8 million, Cambodia is the 68th most populous country in the world. The official religion is Theravada Buddhism, which is practiced by around 95% of the Cambodian population. The country minority groups include Vietnamese, Chinese, Chams and 30 various hill tribes. The capital and largest city is Phnom Penh; the political, economic, and cultural center of Cambodia. The kingdom is a constitutional monarchy with Norodom Sihamoni, a monarch chosen by the Royal Throne Council, as head of state. The head of government is Hun Sen, who is currently the longest serving leader in South East Asia and has ruled Cambodia for over 25 years.

A grandson of the late Cambodian film maker, Vann Chan, screened on Sunday a trailer for a documentary about Cambodian cinema in the 1960s and 70s at the Freer Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institute, in Washington DC. Davy Chou, maker of the new film "Golden Slumbers,'' showed film clips and told the audience about the history of Cambodia's golden age of cinema and of the success of his grandfather's work at Vann Chan Film Production. He spoke about an array of Cambodian screen stars and filmmakers. Davy Chou, whose parents are Cambodian and who grew up in France, hopes to complete the documentary before the end of the year. Chou says he was shocked when he realized how his grandfather's legacy is being forgotten. Nearly all of the film stars from that era were killed by the Khmer Rouge. ... -

A grandson of the late Cambodian film maker, Vann Chan, screened on Sunday a trailer for a documentary about Cambodian cinema in the 1960s and 70s at the Freer Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institute, in Washington DC.

Many cinemas become karaoke parlors, hotels or were taken over by squatters. And a lady occupying his grandparent's home said to him and his mother "Oh I saw those films but we threw them away!"

He spoke about an array of Cambodian screen stars and filmmakers. Davy Chou, whose parents are Cambodian and who grew up in France, hopes to complete the documentary before the end of the year.
Chou says he was shocked when he realized how his grandfather's legacy is being forgotten. Nearly all of the film stars from that era were killed by the Khmer Rouge. Many cinemas become karaoke parlors, hotels or were taken over by squatters. And a lady occupying his grandparent's home said to him and his mother "Oh I saw those films but we threw them away!"

Chou Davy, 27, hopes later this year to release his documentary about Cambodian cinema in the 1960s and 1970s, creating a record of a culture the Khmer Rouge regime of Pol Pot helped to destroy. Chou Davy lives in Paris and is the grandson of Vann Chan, a well-known filmmaker in Phnom Penh in the 1960s. 'Golden Slumber' will be shown in Cambodia, France, the U.S. and other countries, Chou Davy said during a recent interview in Washington.

"Golden Slumbers," a much-anticipated documentary on Cambodian cinema, explores the loss of the country's film industry to war. It played in Long Beach in May as part of the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. Producer Chou Davy, who grew up in France and whose grandfather was a producer of that era, wanted to learn more about the movies that kept so many Cambodians entertained through the 1960s and into the war years. He says the Long Beach screening was a major test of the film's authenticity. VOA Khmer's Cheang Sophinarath reports.
