Kandivli - A River Saga
Year - 1947 - During the time of India's independence an erstwhile river in Kandivli was chosen for the filming of a song sequence of the musically path-breaking filim "Shehnai."
Joe Fernandes, an old film-lover, remembers some films that were shot on this river, including this song from the film "Shehnai" (1947).
" As a boy, I used to swim in this beautiful river." recalls Maxie Rodrigues, an old Kandivli resident.
Filmed in the year 1947, the song from the film "Shehnai" mirrors the handsome past of a river that once was.
The clean, fragrant, and sweet waters have long since lost their spirit.
Today the Kandivli "Nullah" bears an ominous look.

Dahisar is the official boundary of north Mumbai. “It was extremely pure and clean, where we learnt to swim as children and spend our summer holidays. Over the years Mumbai city expanded, to extended suburbs and Dahisar village’s peaceful green rice fields were replaced booming construction industry of the 80’s. “It was polluted by illegal migrants and also by the water from the stables that would flow into the river. The water from these would go mix into the river. This was in the 1980’s”. It was since then that people noticed changes in the river, heavy sewerage with faecal matter. Bhende said, “I could no longer bear the deterioration of this once beautiful river.” And hence she decided to do something about it. She tried to garner support from the locals to help fight and restore the river if not to its past glory to a cleaner state for the pride of Dahisar. She received a huge verbal sympathy, but some real action upon it was yet a far sight. Thus started her long and lonely battle against all odds to save the river from turning into a choking ‘Nullah’.
Bhende met the concerned departments at the Municipal Office, Public Works Department (PWD) and the Storm water Drainage (SWD) where she received the normal response “Amhi kaay karu?” (What do we do?). She drew elaborate plans to provide check dams at regular intervals in the vast catchment areas of the National Park Borivali and the Tulsi Lake. These check dams would preserve rain water at the source to be released whenever necessary, as well as raise the level of water table in the area and save the mangroves in the creek from choking.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA Heritage committee) gave their nod to the possibility of her plan. “I was asked to present my ‘project report’ through some NGO or to form an NGO myself which seemed like too much of a herculean task in itself.” she explained. Yet she worked extremely hard on the project but it ended up not being implemented despite approval.
BMC has made efforts to relocate some of the slums from the banks of the river and built on either side of the river to prevent flooding. Industries nearby still continue to dump their waste into the river. “The filth and bad smell of the river is still evident to us who stay around that area. Many visitors to this area also complain of this stench.” she says. But then why did she have to fight this battle alone? Where did everyone else go?
She has also been a part of the Borivali Dahisar Jagruk Nagrik Munch (BDJNM) which is a group of senior citizens taking up the citizen’s civic problems. However she feels it would have been of great help if the communities around would also be actively involved in this vision.
Despite facing failures at every stage of her struggle, she still hopes that some younger environmentalist would carry on where she left. Bhende feels that someday a younger generation might feel the need to understand hygiene and sanitation, a cleaner river with clean fresh air and not only plush flats but also surrounding matters for a person’s wellbeing.
She feels that it needs likeminded people who have the willingness to put in efforts for a cause like this. “The only satisfaction I got in this whole journey is that I tried.” Tears of joy for her hard work and tears of sorrow for the end of her seemingly unending struggle for the river so close to her heart.

Dahisar
Dahisar is a suburb of Mumbai. Located just inside Mumbai's city limits, Dahisar is the northernmost suburb (and railway station) of the Mumbai Suburban District.
Origins
The origin of the word Dahisar probably has something to do with the ten Hamlets that made up this village. "Dahi" stands for "ten" in the language of Agris, Kolis, Warlis and Dublis, the original residents of Dahisar. Gaothan, Kandarpada, Navagaon, Ovaripada, Ghartanpada, Ketakipada, Ravalpada, Dahivali, Bhagalipada, Wadarypada are the ten original Hamlets of Dahisar.
History
There is a record of continuous habitation since the 1630s, per parish records of the Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church.
The original residents of Dahisar are the East Indians, Panchkalshi, Agri and Koli, who still live primarily in the hamlets of Kandarpada and Gaothan and the tribes who lived in the hills surrounding Dahisar - the Warlis and Dublis.
With the construction of the railway line connecting Dahisar to the city of Mumbai in 1867, came the first lot of migrants, the people from Sindhudurg region of Konkan. These migrants established the first planned residential areas of Dahisar - Maratha Colony in Dahisar East and Mhatre Wadi in the West. The Railway authorities wanted to name the Railhead at Dahisar as Mount Poinsur, but the locals opposed this move and forced the authorities to name it as Dahisar.

Bhende feels that someday a younger generation might feel the need to understand hygiene and sanitation, a cleaner river with clean fresh air and not only plush flats but also surrounding matters for a person’s wellbeing. She feels that it needs likeminded people who have the willingness to put in efforts for a cause like this. “The only satisfaction I got in this whole journey is that I tried.” Tears of joy for her hard work and tears of sorrow for the end of her seemingly unending struggle for the river so close to her heart.

Kandivli - A River Saga Year - 1947 - During the time of India's independence an erstwhile river in Kandivli was chosen for the filming of a song sequence of the musically path-breaking filim "Shehnai." Joe Fernandes, an old film-lover, remembers some films that were shot on this river, including this song from the film "Shehnai" (1947). " As a boy, I used to swim in this beautiful river." recalls Maxie Rodrigues, an old Kandivli resident. Dahisar is the official boundary of north Mumbai. “It was extremely pure and clean, where we learnt to swim as children and spend our summer holidays. Over the years Mumbai city expanded, to extended suburbs and Dahisar village’s peaceful green rice fields were replaced booming construction industry of the 80’s. “It was polluted by illegal migrants and also by the water from the stables that would flow into the river. The water from these would go mix into the river. This was in the 1980’s”. It was since then that people noticed changes in the river, heavy sewerage with faecal matter. Dahisar is the official boundary of north Mumbai. “It was extremely pure and clean, where we learnt to swim as children and spend our summer holidays. Over the years Mumbai city expanded, to extended suburbs and Dahisar village’s peaceful green rice fields were replaced booming construction industry of the 80’s. “It was polluted by illegal migrants and also by the water from the stables that would flow into the river. The water from these would go mix into the river. This was in the 1980’s”. It was since then that people noticed changes in the river, heavy sewerage with faecal matter. Bhende said, “I could no longer bear the deterioration of this once beautiful river.” And hence she decided to do something about it. She tried to garner support from the locals to help fight and restore the river if not to its past glory to a cleaner state for the pride of Dahisar. She received a huge verbal sympathy, but some real action upon it was yet a far sight. Thus started her long and lonely battle against all odds to save the river from turning into a choking ‘Nullah’.
Bhende met the concerned departments at the Municipal Office, Public Works Department (PWD) and the Storm water Drainage (SWD) where she received the normal response “Amhi kaay karu?” (What do we do?). She drew elaborate plans to provide check dams at regular intervals in the vast catchment areas of the National Park Borivali and the Tulsi Lake. These check dams would preserve rain water at the source to be released whenever necessary, as well as raise the level of water table in the area and save the mangroves in the creek from choking.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA Heritage committee) gave their nod to the possibility of her plan. “I was asked to present my ‘project report’ through some NGO or to form an NGO myself which seemed like too much of a herculean task in itself.” she explained. Yet she worked extremely hard on the project but it ended up not being implemented despite approval.
BMC has made efforts to relocate some of the slums from the banks of the river and built on either side of the river to prevent flooding. Industries nearby still continue to dump their waste into the river. “The filth and bad smell of the river is still evident to us who stay around that area. Many visitors to this area also complain of this stench.” she says. But then why did she have to fight this battle alone? Where did everyone else go?
She has also been a part of the Borivali Dahisar Jagruk Nagrik Munch (BDJNM) which is a group of senior citizens taking up the citizen’s civic problems. However she feels it would have been of great help if the communities around would also be actively involved in this vision.
Despite facing failures at every stage of her struggle, she still hopes that some younger environmentalist would carry on where she left. Bhende feels that someday a younger generation might feel the need to understand hygiene and sanitation, a cleaner river with clean fresh air and not only plush flats but also surrounding matters for a person’s wellbeing.
She feels that it needs likeminded people who have the willingness to put in efforts for a cause like this. “The only satisfaction I got in this whole journey is that I tried.” Tears of joy for her hard work and tears of sorrow for the end of her seemingly unending struggle for the river so close to her heart.
