Los Angeles (i/lɒs ˈændʒəlᵻs/ loss AN-jə-ləs or loss AN-jə-liss) (Spanish for "The Angels"), officially the City of Los Angeles and often known by its initials L.A., is the second-largest city in the United States after New York City, the most populous city in the state of California, and the county seat of Los Angeles County.
Situated in Southern California, Los Angeles is known for its mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, sprawling metropolis, and as a major center of the American entertainment industry. Los Angeles lies in a large coastal basin surrounded on three sides by mountains reaching up to and over 10,000 feet (3,000 m).
Historically home to the Chumash and Tongva, Los Angeles was claimed by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo for Spain in 1542 along with the rest of what would become Alta California. The city was officially founded on September 4, 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve. It became a part of Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican–American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, thereby becoming part of the United States. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months before California achieved statehood. The city experienced rapid growth with the discovery of oil.

KCBS-TV, channel 2, is a CBS owned-and-operated television station located in Los Angeles, California, USA. KCBS-TV is owned by the CBS Television Stations subsidiary of CBS Corporation, and operates as part of a television duopoly with independent station KCAL-TV (channel 9). The two stations share offices and studio facilities inside CBS Studio Center in the Studio City section of Los Angeles, and KCBS-TV's transmitter is located atop Mount Wilson.
In the few areas of the western United States where a CBS station is not receivable over-the-air, KCBS-TV is available on satellite television through DirecTV.
KCBS-TV is one of the oldest television stations in the world. It was signed on by Don Lee Broadcasting, which owned a chain of radio stations on the Pacific Coast, and was first licensed by the Federal Radio Commission, forerunner of the Federal Communications Commission as experimental television station W6XAO in June 1931. The station went on the air on December 23, 1931, and by March 1933 was broadcasting programming one hour each day only on Monday through Saturdays. The station used a mechanical camera which broadcast only film footage in an 80-line image, but demonstrated all-electronic receivers as early as 1932. It went off the air in 1935, and then reappeared using an improved mechanical camera producing a 300-line image for a month-long demonstration in June 1936. By August 1937, W6XAO had programming on the air six days each week. Live programming started in April 1938.

The Los Angeles City Council voted to approve a $1 Billion ratepayer hike on water and electricity rates (an increase vocally opposed by city residents, yet passed with only two "no" votes). However, as David Goldstein reports, CBS 2 News shows specific instances of LADWP workers taking excessively long breaks, on the clock. This joins a very long series of investigative reports by this station and others involving misuse of ratepayer dollars in a city where you have no choice but to pay the government for water and power. By Michael Malone -- Broadcasting & Cable, 9/18/2009 11:39:53 AM EDT KCBS and KCAL unveil their new branding at 5 p.m. September 19, inserting the term "NewsCentral" into the individual stations' brands. The aim is to remind viewers that the CBS-owned stations have the largest combined newsgathering resources of any broadcast operation in the market, says President/General Manager Patrick McClenahan. KCBS is a CBS O&O; and KCAL a CBS-owned independent; both work out of a joint Los Angeles newsroom and combine for 11 hours of news a day and 77 newscasts a week. Their brands will appear as CBS 2 NewsCentral and KCAL 9 NewsCentral, with the tagline "News that's central to your life." "It's a natural extension of this duopoly," says McClenahan, "since we combined the stations and opened ...

When you’re stuck with an extended layover in Los Angeles, consider it the perfect excuse to get out and explore the city. With nearby beaches, shops, and museums, what better way to spend 24 hours in Los Angeles than by hitting the streets and shores? Los Angeles sits on the coast of Southern California. Because of the seemingly perpetual warm weather and sunshine, it’s always a good day to soak up the SoCal sunshine. Quirky Venice Beach with its eclectic boardwalk scene is just 6 miles north of Los Angeles International, while the nearby Santa Monica Pier dazzles with its theme park rides. Meanwhile, the ritzy shops along Rodeo Drive and the Melrose Avenue boutiques are prime retail therapy spots. To top off your one day in LA, check out the exhibits at the Museum of Contemporary Art o...

On April 2nd, 1984, the CBS TV station in Los Angeles changed its call letters from KNXT to KCBS and to mark the occasion they broadcast this 30 minute special hosted by Ralph Story recounting the history of the station. Storm & Flooding, Los Angeles Jan. 1995 -TV News Coverage recorded from TV on VHS tape. During the events of January and March 1995, over 100 weather stations recorded their greatest 1-day rainfalls in that station’s history. The major brunt of the January storms hit the Sacramento River Basin and resulted in small stream flooding primarily due to storm drainage system failures, though flooding affected nearly every part of the state. The Salinas River exceeded its previous measured record crest by more than four feet, which was within a foot or two of the reputed crest of the legendary 1862 flood. The Napa River set a new peak record, and the Russian and Pajaro rivers approached their record peaks. 28 people were killed and the flood cost $1.8 billion.
