The datil is an exceptionally hot pepper, a variety of the species Capsicum chinense (syn. Capsicum sinense). Datils are similar in strength to habaneros but have a sweeter, fruitier flavor. Their level of spiciness may vary from 100,000 to 300,000 on the Scoville scale. Mature peppers are about 3.5 in long and yellow-orange in color.
Datil peppers are cultivated throughout the United States and elsewhere, but the majority are produced in St. Augustine, Florida. Many myths attempt to explain the origin of the Datil Pepper: some suggest the peppers were brought to St. Augustine by indentured workers from Minorca in the late 18th century, others posit that they were brought from Cuba around 1880 by a jelly maker named S. B. Valls, and there also exists the Legend of a 17th Century epicurean explorer by the name of Fernando Del Viejo. According to the myth, Fernando Del Viejo was commissioned by Queen Isabella of Spain (at the time called Castile) to travel with the conquistadors to help found the New World and grow Datil Peppers, as they once purportedly backed the Spanish Treasury due to their rarity and golden hue.

Hot Pepper (1933) is an American Pre-Code comedy film starring Lupe Vélez, Edmund Lowe, and Victor McLaglen, directed by John G. Blystone and released by Fox Film Corporation. The film appeared before the enforcement of the Production Code.
This film is considered an installment in the series of films dating back to the silent film What Price Glory? (1926), starring Lowe and McLaglen in their characters of Sergeant Harry Quirt and Captain Jim Flagg with Dolores Del Rio as the female costar. The pair made a sequel to that film called The Cock-Eyed World (1929), costarring Lili Damita. Two other films followed before Hot Pepper.
Capsicum chinense, commonly known as "yellow lantern chili", is a species of chili pepper native to the Americas. C. chinense varieties are well known for their exceptional heat and unique flavors. The hottest peppers in the world are members of the species C. chinense, with Scoville Heat Unit scores of over 1.5 million. Some taxonomists consider them to be part of the species C. annuum, and they are a member of the C. annuum complex. However, C. annuum and C. chinense pepper plants can generally be identified by the number of flowers or fruit per node—one for C. annuum and two to five for C. chinense, though this method is not always correct. The two species can also hybridize and generate inter-specific hybrids.
Despite its name, C. chinense or "Chinese capsicum" is misleading. All Capsicum species originated in the New World.Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin (1727–1817), a Dutch botanist, erroneously named the species in 1776, because he believed they originated in China due to their prevalence in Chinese cuisine after their introduction by European explorers.
Augustine of Hippo (/ɔːˈɡʌstᵻn/ or /ˈɔːɡəstɪn/;Latin: Aurelius Augustinus Hipponensis; 13 November 354 – 28 August 430), also known as Saint Augustine, Saint Austin, or Blessed Augustine, was an early Christian theologian and philosopher whose writings influenced the development of Western Christianity and Western philosophy. He was the bishop of Hippo Regius (modern-day Annaba, Algeria), located in Numidia (Roman province of Africa). He is viewed as one of the most important Church Fathers in Western Christianity for his writings in the Patristic Era. Among his most important works are The City of God and Confessions.
According to his contemporary, Jerome, Augustine "established anew the ancient Faith." In his early years, he was heavily influenced by Manichaeism and afterward by the neo-Platonism of Plotinus. After his baptism and conversion to Christianity in 387, Augustine developed his own approach to philosophy and theology, accommodating a variety of methods and perspectives. Believing that the grace of Christ was indispensable to human freedom, he helped formulate the doctrine of original sin and made seminal contributions to the development of just war theory.
The Datil pepper is one tasty pepper!!! Very fruity and slightly sweet....and does produce a good level of heat!! Very similar to the habanero...but much better and not as bitter. Scoville heat units are between 100K to 300K. I can see why this pepper is very popular and can be used in a variety of different sauces. Here is more information from my friend Joe Stewart's website: So what makes the Datil Pepper unique? Datils are similar in strength to Habaneros peppers but have a sweeter, mellower flavor. Their level of fieriness can be anywhere from 100,000 to 300,000 Scoville units which puts them mid-range in heat but with just enough kick to spice up your foods, nice-ly! Mature Datil peppers are about 3.5 inches long and bright yellow-orange in color. They are grown much like any ...

I grew some ultra hot peppers last year, Trinidad Scorpion and Super Datil. They produced very well, so I decided to prune them back and overwinter them in the greenhouse to see what they would do in the second year. Both plants were heavily loaded with peppers, so it was time to pick them for the freezer. The Super Datil had over 400 peppers on it. That is amazing. But these plants are fully mature, quite capable of producing massive amounts of peppers. I'll have enough peppers to make hot pepper spray for several years. The bell peppers turned out pretty good too. :) How I make pepper spray: http://youtu.be/6fN2LTMRYgg https://www.facebook.com/mhp.gardener
