Plot: An all-boys group from Allahabad's St. Joseph's College is thrilled when a new-comer from Mumbai, Vaishnavi, joins them. Most of the students' time is spent in college, then in coaching classes, and finally they return home to stern parents who want them to complete their homework and ensure they secure good marks and become doctors, engineers, and IAS officers. Some even go to the extent of forcing their children to take up Science instead of Arts - killing whatever talent and initiative their children may have. Unable to handle the pressure as well as convince his parents to let him take arts - Navneet Singh kills himself. Devastated by his death, his friends approach Advocate Sanjay to sue not only Navneet's but also their respective parents. The Police refuse to register a complaint, and Sanjay files this matter in a Trial Court naming the parents as well as the Government of India as defendants. Many other students approach him and add themselves as plaintiffs- bringing the total to over one Lakh nine thousand. The argument from the Government is that this is a personal issue, strongly supported by parents who assert that they only want a better future for their children. With the media and politicians taking an interest in this scenario - the debate taking place is how will an already overburdened and openly corrupt judicial system - that has matters pending for decades - will address - leave alone resolve - this issue within the students' lifetime.

Plot: On June 12, 1964, Nelson Mandela, along with a number of political detainees, was sentenced to life imprisonment in what remains the most sensational treason trial in the history of South Africa. The incarceration of Mandela and other political prisoners on Robben Island would become a symbol of the struggle to end apartheid and win freedom for the black majority in South Africa. On February 2, 1990, President F.W. De Klerk stood before Parliament and announced the legalization of the African National Congress and a host of other banned political organizations. At the same time, he announced that Nelson Mandela, having served 27 years in prison, would be released within 7 days. Yet the world, and indeed most South Africans, knew little about how this momentous occasion came to pass. Until now. Mandela & De Klerk was filmed in South Africa. Most of the locations are those where the actual events took place, and the dramatized sequences are augmented with newsreel footage to ensure the most accurate portrayal possible of recent historical events.

Plot: In 1860 Paris, chemist Louis Pasteur is considered a quack within the medical community for advocating that doctors and surgeons wash their hands and boil their instruments to destroy microbes that can kill their patients. He came across this belief when discovering microscopic organisms in sour wine, the organisms which could be killed if heated sufficiently. The belief among the scientific community at large is that the organisms are the result of disease and not the cause. This belief is despite the fact that thirty percent of women die in childbirth due to child bed disease, accounting for twenty thousand annual deaths in Paris alone. The debate takes Pasteur all the way to a meeting with Emperor Napoleon III and his physician, Dr. Charbonnet, who is one of the leading opponents of Pasteur. Several years later - France now a republic - much of Pasteur's reputation changes as a government sanctioned experiment with anthrax and sheep shows that a vaccine created by Pasteur proves effective. As Pasteur begins work on finding the cause and a cure for rabies, which proves a more difficult challenge, he still has his detractors, including Dr. Charbonnet. This continuing debate brings about his biggest challenge: proving that microbes are the cause of all disease. Through it all, he is supported not only by his family, but Dr. Jean Martel, who was once a junior physician in the emperor's court and a physician within the republic's government, but who now works with Pasteur and is his son-in-law. But an act of bravado by Charbonnet may ultimately prove to be the breakthrough for which Pasteur is looking. Moving the experimental treatments from animals to humans proves a bigger obstacle, as is Charbonnet's need to win at all cost in the court of public opinion.

Dr. Louis Pasteur: Jean, how many dogs have we left?::Dr. Jean Martel: Ten.::Dr. Louis Pasteur: Are they well? Healthy?::Dr. Jean Martel: In perfect condition. They've never been exposed.::Dr. Louis Pasteur: Give them hydrophobia.::Dr. Jean Martel: [in disbelief] You mean...?::Dr. Louis Pasteur: Give them hydrophobia.
[about Pasteur]::Dr. Charbonnet: You remember a few years ago, he was the cause of a slight controversy on the subject of sour wine.::Napoleon III: Oh, yes, I recall.::Dr. Charbonnet: He claimed to have found little animals in it... infinitesimal beasts.::Napoleon III: But are there such creatures? Do they really exist?::Dr. Charbonnet: Your Majesty, microscopic organisms have long been observed. They spring into being of their own accord wherever there is putrid matter or fermentation. They are the result rather than the cause of disease. By heating wine to certain temperature, Monsieur Pasteur was able to destroy them. I presume he plans to cure blood poisoning in the same manner: namely, by boiling our blood.::Napoleon III: Heaven forbid.::Dr. Charbonnet: It's not unlikely, I assure you.::Napoleon III: But, I won't have it, Charbonnet. I won't tolerate such practices. We're not living in the Middle Ages. This is France... Paris... the nineteenth century.::Empress Eugenie: I think Monsieur Pasteur should be allowed to defend himself.::Dr. Charbonnet: But, your Majesty...::Empress Eugenie: I, too, have read the pamphlet, Doctor Charbonnet. It said nothing about boiling blood - merely to boil the instruments that you surgeons use.::Dr. Charbonnet: Your Majesty, if I did anything so absurd as to boil my instruments or scrub my hands, they'd think I was a witch doctor resorting to charms and laugh me out of the hospital.::Empress Eugenie: That would be a novelty, Monsieur. Most people who go to hospitals are CARRIED out... dead.::Napoleon III: Yes, Cahrbonnet. Why?
Dr. Louis Pasteur: [to his assistants] Remember our aim: Find the microbe - kill the microbe.
Dr. Louis Pasteur: [speaking to the Emperor] Sire, the hospitals of Paris are pesthouses. There's scarcely a doctor in the city who's not carrying death on his hands and instruments.::Dr. Charbonnet: Because of microbes, Monsieur? Your private menagerie of invisible beasts?::Dr. Louis Pasteur: Exactly. Doctor Charbonnet could see them for himself if he took the trouble to use his microscope. He could watch them multiply into murderous millions. They breed in filth. They may start from the gutters of Paris tonight and by tomorrow claim some mother from this very court.::Dr. Charbonnet: Preposterous! To think that a human being could be destroyed by an animal ten thousand times smaller than a flea. It's as though an army of ants were to overthrow your Majesty's empire.
Dr. Louis Pasteur: Will you try and explain to Dr. Radisse what we are doing? [sarcastically] He's a member of the Academy of Medicine, so you'll have to use very simple language.::Dr. Emile Roux: We're convinced, Doctor - after eight years of experimenting - that this vaccine, when injected into the animal, will set up an immunity.::Dr. Radisse: Ridiculous! It would take eighty years to convince me.::Dr. Louis Pasteur: Eighty? Aren't you a little optimistic?
[last lines]::[addressing The Academy of Medicine - directing his remarks to the young men in the balcony]::Dr. Louis Pasteur: You young men - doctors and scientists of the future - do not let yourselves be tainted by apparent skepticism; nor discouraged by the sadness of certain hours that creep over nations. Do not become angry at your opponents, for no scientific theory has ever been accepted without opposition. Live in the serene peace of libraries and laboratories. Say to yourselves, first, "What have I done for my instruction?" And as you gradually advance, "What am I accomplishing?" Until the time comes when you may have the immense happiness of thinking that you have contributed in some way to the welfare and progress of mankind.

Finance minister 'cautiously optimistic' about prospect for 3.1% growth in 2016
유일호 "재정•통화정책 여력 충분…올해 3%대 성장 가능"
Korea's finance minister says the country is "cautiously optimistic" about hitting its three-point-one percent
GDP growth target for 2016.
Speaking to
Korean and
U.S. officials and investors in
New York, Yoo Il-ho said Korea is willing to "go all out" to hit its targets this year, despite the sluggish global economy and a slowing
China.
This comes after the
IMF cut Korea's outlook for this year to two-point-seven percent and to two-point-nine percent for 2017.
The minister said that while Korea's exports are slowing, risks from China appear limited.

Senegal government to launch new national carrier
Senegal's finance minister, Amadou Ba has announced plans to launch a new national airline to replace the loss-making
Senegal Airlines. Senegal Airlines, which was founded in 2009 to replace defunct predecessor
Air Senegal International, had its air
operator's certificate revoked last month amid a mounting $78 million in debts. The carrier was a joint venture between the private sector and the
Senegalese state. It went through a restructuring program last year reducing the 230-strong workforce by 40% and giving the remaining employees a 40% pay cut. Ba gave no further details about the new airline, but analysts say that a new Senegal carrier could also face significant challenges in the face of increased international competition putting a squeeze on
African airlines.

With today being election day
... and the country's growth still in the slow lane,.... economic issues were likely on the forefront of people's minds as they turned to polling stations.
And while there is growing skepticism among economists,... about

Hwang Ji-hye has the details.
Seoul's
Finance Minister Yoo Il-ho says... Korea has enough room to implement both fiscal and monetary policies to prop up growth.
This came during his briefing on the
Korean economy for foreign investors in
New York on Tuesday, local time.
During an interview with
Bloomberg there, he also opened the door for an extra budget,... saying if global economic conditions worsen further, the government could rely on more fiscal power.
With that... Yoo emphasized... three-percent-range growth is an attainable target for the Korean economy.
The government's growth forecast for this year currently stands at 3-point-1 percent.
Despite the possibility of more easing, the minister's outlook is considered rather rosy compared to global and local financial institutions that expect Korea to fall short of expansion in the three-percent range this year.
The International Monetary Fund also downgraded its latest outlook for the country to 2-point-7 percent.
These grim projections are widely attributed to external economic conditions.
"
Global conditions are worse than expected and because of that... exports are off track, even if they picked up slightly in March.
Pressure from this could justify significantly downgrading the outlook."
The
IMF also says... slowing demand in
China will continue to take a toll on the Korean economy.
Korea's total exports have plunged for 15 straight months now, and those include, of course, shipments to China, which make up a quarter of total exports.
"Still, new figures from China are showing a silver lining.
Fresh export data points to more confidence that the country is regaining stability, rising 11-and-a-half percent in March on-year, in dollar terms, -- the fastest pace in a year.

The News on phone from
Lahore.
The minister said that he would not be visiting UK along with the premier but he would be staying in the country to look after important matters in his absence.
Well-placed sources told The News here on Monday evening that PM Nawaz was unwell and had initial medical check-up in Lahore on Monday where he had been advised to proceed to London for his detailed medical check-up, which was due for a number of months but he had been putting it off due to his hectic official engagements.
Prime Minster Nawaz developed minor irregularity in his cardiac functions and for that he got treatment from a London hospital in
2011 well before becoming the prime minister in this stint. He had to undergo a simple procedure but incidentally it got complicated due to negligence of his interventionist cardiologist.
Later, the situation was brought quickly under control through emergent steps and his health returned to complete normalcy in the following days. Since then, he has been advised by his doctors to undergo regular check-up twice a year or at least once in a year.
The sources said that
Prime Minister Nawaz will be returning
Islamabad early next week after a thorough check-up.
To a query, sources made it clear that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was going to London due to health reasons and it was nothing to do with the politics or any other development. The kite-flyers must desist from making speculations about it, the sources advised.

Kremlin hints at Kudrin return
Former
Russian Finance Minister Aleksey Kudrin will reportedly unofficially write an economic program for
President Putin, reports business media
RBC.
The Kremlin hasn’t denied the story, saying Kudrin's government role has yet to be determined.
According to an RBC source close to Kudrin, negotiations on Kudrin heading an organization to develop
Russia’s economic program have been going on since last year.It is essential that Kudrin, as the program developer, has the authority to request documents and statistics from ministries and departments, according to the source.
Basing the project on published material would have no practical application, the source added.
“He is one of the most successful cabinet ministers in our country, one of the best finance ministers in the world, not only in Russia. It would be wrong not to use his expertise to develop plans," said Kremlin spokesman
Dmitry Peskov on Tuesday.
Peskov added that it’s up to Kudrin to decide whether he will take part. Kudrin was offered the job as head of the
Center of Strategic
Research, one of the oldest Russian think tanks.
Kudrin says the reports he will develop an economic program for President Putin are exaggerated, adding that it’s more about working as an expert for the economic policy council.
Kudrin was Russia’s Finance Minister from
2000 to
2011. One of his key achievements was paying off Russia’s $
143 billion foreign debt and building reserves that helped the country deal with the global financial crisis of 2008.
In 2011, he was asked to leave the post by former
President Dmitry Medvedev. Kudrin disagreed with Russia’s growing military budget and social spending as well as the country's dependence on oil.
After Putin was re-elected as president, he reportedly asked Kudrin to return to state service. Kudrin turned down the offer, saying that the country had not clearly defined a program to lessen its oil dependence.
Despite this, Kudrin continues to advise President Putin on the economy.
