JLP wins 33 to 30 seats in Jamaica General Election 2/25/16
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Labour Party was a short while ago declared the winner of the 2016 general election, after claiming 33 of the 63 constituency seats.
The Labourites will now form Jamaica’s new Government, after the People’s National Party only managed to win 30 constituency seats.
The December 2011 election, which resulted in the JLP being voted out of office after just one term, saw a 53 per cent turnout of electors, in which the PNP shocked the nation by capturing 42 of the 63 parliamentary seats. The remainder went to the JLP.
Today’s general election was the 17th since Universal Adult Suffrage in which Jamaicans won the right to vote in 1944 at a time when the country was still under colonial rule.
ST JAMES, Jamaica – The Jamaica Labour Party’s Fayval Williams was a short while ago declared the winner of the St Andrew Eastern constituency seat, beating the People’s National Party’s incumbent Andre Hylton by just over 150 votes.
Based on the preliminary results, Williams amassed 7,140 votes to Hylton’s 6,983.
Hylton won the seat by 254 votes in 2011 against a then pregnant JLP candidate Dr Saphire Longmore-Dropinski.
The seat, since it was formed in 1944, has been held by the JLP five times and the PNP six — during the periods 1944 to 1955, and 1976 to present when it regained its name as St Andrew Eastern.

It remains a Commonwealth realm in concert with the Monarchy of Jamaica holding ultimate executive power, where Queen Elizabeth II is the current head of state and Queen of Jamaica.Kingston is the country's largest city and the capital.

The Smile Jamaica Concert was held on December 5, 1976, at the National Heroes Park, Kingston, Jamaica. The concert was held during a time when there was significant escalation in Jamaica's sociopolitical culture of violence. A bloody struggle for power erupted before the 1976 elections wherein supporters of Edward Seaga's Jamaican Labour Party and Michael Manley's Peoples National Party engaged in a street war that reached unprecedented levels of violence during the weeks and months leading up to the election. A State of Emergency was declared in June 1976 and 500 people, including some prominent member of the JLP, were accused of trying to overthrow the government and were detained without charges. ST JAMES, Jamaica – The Jamaica Labour Party’s Fayval Williams was a short while ago declared the winner of the St Andrew Eastern constituency seat, beating the People’s National Party’s incumbent Andre Hylton by just over 150 votes.
Based on the preliminary results, Williams amassed 7,140 votes to Hylton’s 6,983.
Hylton won the seat by 254 votes in 2011 against a then pregnant JLP candidate Dr Saphire Longmore-Dropinski.
The seat, since it was formed in 1944, has been held by the JLP five times and the PNP six — during the periods 1944 to 1955, and 1976 to present when it regained its name as St Andrew Eastern.

The concert was held during a time when there was significant escalation in Jamaica's sociopolitical culture of violence. A bloody struggle for power erupted before the 1976 elections wherein supporters of Edward Seaga's Jamaican Labour Party and Michael Manley's Peoples National Party engaged in a street war that reached unprecedented levels of violence during the weeks and months leading up to the election. A State of Emergency was declared in June 1976 and 500 people, including some prominent member of the JLP, were accused of trying to overthrow the government and were detained without charges.
The Smile Jamaica Concert was scheduled for December 5, 1976 as an attempt to quell the violence in the streets, although many saw the concert as a tactic used by Michael Manley to enlist support for his party during the elections, which were scheduled for December 15, 1976.
On December 3, 1976 just 2 days before the scheduled concert. Bob Marley and the Wailers were rehearsing for the concert at Marley's residence at 56 Hope Road when 5 gunmen ambushed the place and shot Bob, his wife Rita, and his manager Don Taylor. Taylor and Rita Marley sustained serious gunshot wounds, while Marley was struck in the chest and arm. It has since come to light that the assassination attempt was orchestrated by operatives of Edward Seaga's Jamaican Labour Party.
Marley agreed to preform one song for the 80,000 people in attendance at the Smile Jamaica Concert on December 5, but it turned into an incendiary 90-minute tour-de-force despite his gun injuries.

Jamaica has a large population of Chinese and East Indians. Sizeable numbers of Whites and Mulattoes, and persons of Syrian/Lebanese descent, many of which have intermixed throughout the generations. Individuals on the island seldom belong to one racial group as mixed-race Jamaicans are the second largest racial group; the genetic roots of many people can be traced to origins that are not necessarily physically apparent. Christianity is the major religion in the island.
Despite its location almost smack in the center of the Caribbean Sea, the island of Jamaica doesn't blend in easily with the rest of the Caribbean archipelago. To be sure, it boasts the same addictive sun rays, sugary sands and pampered resort-life as most of the other islands, but it is also set apart historically and culturally.
Jamaica's resources include coffee, papaya, bauxite, gypsum, limestone and sugar cane.

Garrisons in Jamaica have often emerged as neighborhoods that are don- ruled shadow versions of the official State. These are poor inner city communities characterized by homogeneous and, in some cases, over-voting patterns for one of Jamaica's two major political parties: the Peoples National Party (PNP) or the Jamaica Labor Party (JLP). This presentation, based on my 2011 dissertation, will give a brief analysis of the garrison phenomenon and how they have evolved. This presentation, based on my 2011 dissertation, will give a brief analysis of the garrison phenomenon and how they have evolved. About This Speaker:
Dr. Damion Blake was a 2011-2012 Drugs, Security and Democracy (DSD) dissertation fellow. He recently completed his PhD in Political Theory and Policy in the Alliance for Social, Political, Ethical and Cultural Thought (ASPECT Program) at Virginia Tech with his project titled "Violent Actors and Embedded Power: Exploring the Evolving Roles of Jamaica's Dons." Blake holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA.) and a Master of Science (MSc.) from the University of the West Indies (UWI) at Mona, Jamaica. He taught as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Government at UWI (2005-2008) and in the departments of History and Political Science at Virginia Tech. Currently he is an Assistant Adjunct Professor in the Department of Political Science at Virginia Tech.

Garrisons in Jamaica have often emerged as neighborhoods that are don- ruled shadow versions of the official State. These are poor inner city communities characterized by homogeneous and, in some cases, over-voting patterns for one of Jamaica's two major political parties: the Peoples National Party (PNP) or the Jamaica Labor Party (JLP). This presentation, based on my 2011 dissertation, will give a brief analysis of the garrison phenomenon and how they have evolved.
