This film portrays the love angle between two army officers who fall in love with the same woman but when the indo-pak war breaks out, all hell breaks loose and the junior officer vows to take revenge with the other officer who has stolen his sweetheart by proposing her for marriage. But when they are posted on the frontline during the war he decides to get rid of his superior by planning to kill him once and for all but fails to do so as he realises his mistake. Sanjeev Kumar is killed by a Pakistani sentry in the end by deceit and the National flag falls on him. Besides this romantic drama the film also showcases the emotional remembrance of a father for his KIA son who dies in the previous war i.e. 1965 indo pak-war and highlights the bravery and courage of Indian soldiers and airmen during the last days of the present 1971 war when India defeats Pakistan and with this east Pakistan is finished and Bangladesh is created.

The movie story deals with Ajit Singh (Dharmendra), an illiterate truck driver learns from his dying adoptive mother, that he is the only surviving son of an honest cop who was killed and his entire family obliterated by the dreaded dacoit Bharat Thakur (Ajit) and swears revenge. On his way to Dinapur, the dacoit's hideout he meets a grievously injured cop Inspector D'souza (Satyen Kappu) who dies protecting his stash of ammunitions from local dacoits.Inspector D'souza was en route to the village of Dinapur to set up a Police station with his men and the ammo and he leaves the weapons at Ajit Singh's disposal before succumbing to his wounds.Ajit Singh uses this new found stash of machine guns and grenades to pose as a cop and sets up a police station in the aforementioned village with the help of the villagers.His love interest is the feisty and pretty village belle Radha (Hema Malini),who is the niece of dreaded dacoit Bharat Thakur but hates his ways and supports Ajit Singh. Bharat Thakur himself is a cunning man and he sets up his man, the village drunkard Chandi (Keshto Mukherjee) as a spy within the village police station nexus. The rest of the film follows the struggle between Ajit Singh and Bharat and how he goes about taking his revenge and thus fulfilling his Pratigya (Promise).

Plot: Avtaar Krishen lives a poor lifestyle with his wife, Radha, and two sons, Ramesh and Chander. He works in a factory and toils hard so that his sons can get the necessary education, and live a better lifestyle. He gets injured and crippled while working, but is compensated adequately by his employer, Bawaji. Years later his sons have grown up. While Ramesh has married Sudha and works with a bank; Chander is wooing Renu, the only daughter of wealthy Seth Laxminarayan. When Avtaar and Radha wish to go on a tirathyatra (pilgrimage), they ask Ramesh to book tickets for them, but he tells them that he has no money. When Radha gets sick, their servant, Sewak, enters Sudha's room to get some money for her treatment, as a result Radha does get treatment, but Sudha blames them for stealing her money. Avtaar asks Ramesh and his wife to get out, only to find out that the house is now in Sudha's name. AVtaar, Radha and Sewak move out and live in a shanty hut. Their hopes are with Chander, who does well in his exams, decides to marry Renu, and moves out without financially assisting his parents. Now Avtaar and Radha are elderly and dependent on Sewak, and the question remains will they resign themselves to this existence, if not, what possibly can a crippled older male accomplish, especially at this time in his life?

But when they are posted on the frontline during the war he decides to get rid of his superior by planning to kill him once and for all but fails to do so as he realises his mistake. Sanjeev Kumar is killed by a Pakistani sentry in the end by deceit and the National flag falls on him. Besides this romantic drama the film also showcases the emotional remembrance of a father for his KIA son who dies in the previous war i.e. 1965 indo pak-war and highlights the bravery and courage of Indian soldiers and airmen during the last days of the present 1971 war when India defeats Pakistan and with this east Pakistan is finished and Bangladesh is created.

The movie story deals with Ajit Singh (Dharmendra), an illiterate truck driver learns from his dying adoptive mother, that he is the only surviving son of an honest cop who was killed and his entire family obliterated by the dreaded dacoit Bharat Thakur (Ajit) and swears revenge. On his way to Dinapur, the dacoit's hideout he meets a grievously injured cop Inspector D'souza (Satyen Kappu) who dies protecting his stash of ammunitions from local dacoits.Inspector D'souza was en route to the village of Dinapur to set up a Police station with his men and the ammo and he leaves the weapons at Ajit Singh's disposal before succumbing to his wounds.Ajit Singh uses this new found stash of machine guns and grenades to pose as a cop and sets up a police station in the aforementioned village with the help of the villagers.His love interest is the feisty and pretty village belle Radha (Hema Malini),who is the niece of dreaded dacoit Bharat Thakur but hates his ways and supports Ajit Singh. Bharat Thakur himself is a cunning man and he sets up his man, the village drunkard Chandi (Keshto Mukherjee) as a spy within the village police station nexus. The rest of the film follows the struggle between Ajit Singh and Bharat and how he goes about taking his revenge and thus fulfilling his Pratigya (Promise).
