Last night, Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino hosted the first of three of what he's calling PHAROS concerts out in the middle of the desert near Joshua Tree, Calif. In the lead up to the shows, speculation had run wild about what Glover was expected to do during them. Going in, he promised that they would be the only live performances that he would give in 2016, and they quickly became one of the hottest tickets of the year.
Though phones and other recording devices were confiscated before fans entered, a few people managed to sneak their phones in to offer the world a peek behind the curtain.

Donald Glover and crew put on a one-of-a-kind event out in Joshua Tree National Park, September 2nd through the 4th.
Rules on camera gear were strict and absolutely no recording devices of any kind were allowed into the show space. (I only shot on the grounds, all show footage shot by people willing to break the rules).
A night of magic, a night of experience. Hopefully all the amazing, beautiful souls I met that Saturday night find their way to this video.

The new album is nothing like I expected, it's even better. Gambino managed to surprise everyone in the room with a psychedelic alien-tribal collection of tracks with all the emotion and smooth vibes of the best R&B; and the powerful instrumentals and energy of an evolved funk album. It's familiar like an old hand-me-down record that changed the course of your youth and simultaneously unlike anything you've ever heard. Childish Gambino is working on a whole new level and he and his team have everything to be incredibly proud of.
I can't wait to spin PHAROS at home and to go over and over and over and over.

Gambino managed to surprise everyone in the room with a psychedelic alien-tribal collection of tracks with all the emotion and smooth vibes of the best R&B; and the powerful instrumentals and energy of an evolved funk album. It's familiar like an old hand-me-down record that changed the course of your youth and simultaneously unlike anything you've ever heard. Childish Gambino is working on a whole new level and he and his team have everything to be incredibly proud of.
