Sir Walter Raleigh was an English landed gentleman, writer, poet, soldier, politician, courtier, spy, and explorer. He was cousin to Sir Richard Grenville and younger half-brother of Sir Humphrey Gilbert. He is also well known for popularising tobacco in England.
Raleigh was born to a Protestant family in Devon, the son of Walter Raleigh and Catherine Champernowne. Little is known of his early life, though he spent some time in Ireland, in Killua Castle, Clonmellon, County Westmeath, taking part in the suppression of rebellions and participating in the Siege of Smerwick. Later, he became a landlord of property confiscated from the native Irish. He rose rapidly in the favour of Queen Elizabeth I and was knighted in 1585. Raleigh was instrumental in the English colonisation of North America and was granted a royal patent to explore Virginia, which paved the way for future English settlements. In 1591, he secretly married Elizabeth Throckmorton, one of the Queen's ladies-in-waiting, without the Queen's permission, for which he and his wife were sent to the Tower of London. After his release, they retired to his estate at Sherborne, Dorset.
In 1594, Raleigh heard of a "City of Gold" in South America and sailed to find it, publishing an exaggerated account of his experiences in a book that contributed to the legend of "El Dorado". After Queen Elizabeth died in 1603, Raleigh was again imprisoned in the Tower, this time for being involved in the Main Plot against King James I, who was not favourably disposed toward him. In 1616, he was released to lead a second expedition in search of El Dorado. This was unsuccessful, and men under his command ransacked a Spanish outpost. He returned to England and, to appease the Spanish, was arrested and executed in 1618.

Heres a virtual movie of the great Sir Walter Raleigh reading one of the 30 or so poems attributed to him,none of which were published within his lifetime "The Lie" Sir Walter Raleigh was a man in turmoil in the waning stages of his life, it was at this time where he was to be put to death for a precedent that in modern days would be considered extremely unfair. When writing "The Lie", Raleigh must have wanted to challenge the way of thinking and make a scything point. This feat was achieved by Raleigh in thirteen short stanzas. This poem, written like a persuasive commentary in no general direction but to all, utilizes multiple elements to portray the meaning. Clearly, no elements are more apparent than the tone and persona Raleigh creates with brilliant diction and fantastic structure. Raleigh's sarcastic and challenging tone shows throughout this poem in order to drive home a vivid point to leave the world with. The ultimate message of not to trust the status quo and to challenge an unjust way of thinking crystalizes by the end of his rhetoric.
First and foremost, the actual lie in this poem should not be thought of as a superficial lie, but something much more deeply rooted than that. When Raleigh writes of the lie, he means to challenge something at its own core and to prove it illogical, thus doing this by the use of his challenging and sarcastic tone. Raleigh writes his first example of this when he states, "Fear not to touch the best/The truth shall be thy warrant", a bold claim to begin such a poem with (lines 3-4). He wants these words and the meaning behind them to reach everybody no matter how noble or righteous the ear may be. His belief is that he had been wronged so he shall challenge everybody with the truth as his proof and his principle. Sir Raleigh continues by writing, "Go, since I needs must die/And give the world the lie" (lines 5-6). Here, he wills his words to live, since he must die, and enlighten the world of the falsities they are fed by their society. These words begin the challenging tone Raleigh decides to take throughout his poem.

I created this video to interest people in Mark Ellis' book CRYPTOZOICA. I wanted to show some of the images from the book to give people a feel for the atmosphere, plot and pacing. Deep in the jungled hell of Big Tamtung, a forgotten island in the South China Seas, a miraculous ancient substance is found that will unlock the secrets of life on Earth-- Prima Materia, a fabled material that has been whispered about since Biblical times. Sir Walter Raleigh Biography
Sir Walter Raleigh was an English landed gentleman, writer, poet, soldier, politician, courtier, spy, and explorer. He was cousin to Sir Richard Grenville and younger half-brother of Sir Humphrey Gilbert. He is also well known for popularising tobacco in England. Raleigh was born to a Protestant family in Devon, the son of Walter Raleigh and Catherine Champernowne. Little is known of his early life, though he spent some time in Ireland, in Killua Castle, Clonmellon, County Westmeath, taking part in the suppression of rebellions and participating in the Siege of Smerwick. Later, he became a landlord of property confiscated from the native Irish. He rose rapidly in the favour of Queen Elizabeth I and was knighted in 1585. Sir Walter Raleigh was an English landed gentleman, writer, poet, soldier, politician, courtier, spy, and explorer. He was cousin to Sir Richard Grenville and younger half-brother of Sir Humphrey Gilbert. He is also well known for popularising tobacco in England.
Raleigh was born to a Protestant family in Devon, the son of Walter Raleigh and Catherine Champernowne. Little is known of his early life, though he spent some time in Ireland, in Killua Castle, Clonmellon, County Westmeath, taking part in the suppression of rebellions and participating in the Siege of Smerwick. Later, he became a landlord of property confiscated from the native Irish. He rose rapidly in the favour of Queen Elizabeth I and was knighted in 1585. Raleigh was instrumental in the English colonisation of North America and was granted a royal patent to explore Virginia, which paved the way for future English settlements. In 1591, he secretly married Elizabeth Throckmorton, one of the Queen's ladies-in-waiting, without the Queen's permission, for which he and his wife were sent to the Tower of London. After his release, they retired to his estate at Sherborne, Dorset.
In 1594, Raleigh heard of a "City of Gold" in South America and sailed to find it, publishing an exaggerated account of his experiences in a book that contributed to the legend of "El Dorado". After Queen Elizabeth died in 1603, Raleigh was again imprisoned in the Tower, this time for being involved in the Main Plot against King James I, who was not favourably disposed toward him. In 1616, he was released to lead a second expedition in search of El Dorado. This was unsuccessful, and men under his command ransacked a Spanish outpost. He returned to England and, to appease the Spanish, was arrested and executed in 1618.

Heres a virtual movie of the great Sir Walter Raleigh reading one of the 30 or so poems attributed to him,none of which were published within his lifetime "The Lie" Sir Walter Raleigh was a man in turmoil in the waning stages of his life, it was at this time where he was to be put to death for a precedent that in modern days would be considered extremely unfair. When writing "The Lie", Raleigh must have wanted to challenge the way of thinking and make a scything point. This feat was achieved by Raleigh in thirteen short stanzas. This poem, written like a persuasive commentary in no general direction but to all, utilizes multiple elements to portray the meaning. Clearly, no elements are more apparent than the tone and persona Raleigh creates with brilliant diction and fantastic structure. Raleigh's sarcastic and challenging tone shows throughout this poem in order to drive home a vivid point to leave the world with. The ultimate message of not to trust the status quo and to challenge an unjust way of thinking crystalizes by the end of his rhetoric.
First and foremost, the actual lie in this poem should not be thought of as a superficial lie, but something much more deeply rooted than that. When Raleigh writes of the lie, he means to challenge something at its own core and to prove it illogical, thus doing this by the use of his challenging and sarcastic tone. Raleigh writes his first example of this when he states, "Fear not to touch the best/The truth shall be thy warrant", a bold claim to begin such a poem with (lines 3-4). He wants these words and the meaning behind them to reach everybody no matter how noble or righteous the ear may be. Deep in the jungled hell of Big Tamtung, a forgotten island in the South China Seas, a miraculous ancient substance is found that will unlock the secrets of life on Earth-- Prima Materia, a fabled material that has been whispered about since Biblical times. Two centuries before, Charles Darwin discovered the last pool of Prima Materia on Big Tamtung but his discovery was suppressed by The School of Night, a secret society of scholars founded by Sir Walter Raleigh. Now, when a small group of scientists and fortune hunters explore the jungles of Big Tamtung, they must endure frightening tests of their ingenuity and courage, as they struggle against ancient terrors--a lost world of dinosaurs and a miracle older than time. In 1616 he was released to lead a second expedition in search of El Dorado. This was unsuccessful and men under his command ransacked a Spanish outpost. He returned to England and, to appease the Spanish, was arrested and executed in 1618.

CANTOS started out as a call to SE London filmmakers to collaborate on a project called 'INFERNO' initially to travel & later on be Vj'd by Scanner and musician Laurie Anderson, with a narration by Colin Redgrave. this is one of several that we made on no-budget using a P170 with brilliant lighting cameraman Miguel Amortegui along with executive producer Christy Symington, ARBS and producer/director Tontxi Vazquez. Much came about in only one room and a couple of exterior locations around Deptford,London; home to Christopher Marlowe, Pepy's, Sir Walter Raleigh, and the original Cross Bones of St. Nicholas Church mixed with allegorical references to love, loss and chiaroscuro feelings of low light and Dante's voyage with Virgil. This is one of the tomes that is less abstract than the others in this continuous work still in progress. It also inspired "Elysian Kaffe" a UK foreign language -London based feature script by Tontxi Vazquez currently in pre-production w/ Dop Miguel Amortegui attached. With overtones to Inception, Altered States, L'Innocente, Anti-Christ and the writings during the Inquisition.

"Bowls", "Bowling On The Green", "Bocce", "Lawn Bowling": by all of these names, lawn bowling has been around for several thousand years.
Some rules have likely changed over that time, but the fundamentals seem to be consistent, certainly since the game's historic record was started in the 14th Century.
Historians suggest the game made its way across Europe with Julius Caesar's centurions. At that time, and still today among Italians, the game was known as "bocce". By the 13th Century, "bowls", was entrenched in the British Isles. At the turn of the century, 1299 AD, the Southhampton Old Bowling Green Club was organized in England. The club remains active today, the oldest of record in the world.
Global politics threatened the game for a time. In the 14th Century, it was banned for commoners in France and England because archery, essential for defense, was losing popularity. The Scottish were having none of it. In Scotland the game continued uninterrupted, a favorite among even such legendary notables as Sir Walter Scott and Robert Burns. In Glasgow today 200 public bowling greens are in operation, including some enclosed greens for winter play.
Today's rules, the flat lawn, and even a dress code, seem to derive from the Scottish. Over time, the waves of Scottish emigrants took their game with them and established clubs in many countries, the colonies of the Western Hemisphere among them.
One famous story, and it has some credence, is that Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh were in the middle of a game when word reached them of the impending assault of the Spanish Armada. The story goes that Sir Francis insisted on finishing the game before setting sail to engage the Spanish; noble dedication, indeed. In fact, he had to wait for the incoming tide to peak before he could get his ship out of the harbor anyway.
The American Revolution and virulent anti-British feeling in the Colonies stifled the game for nearly a century. Luckily, the Canadians kept it alive, spreading it from coast to coast.
New Jersey gets credit for lawn bowling's resurrection in the United States, when a small private club was started in 1879. By 1899 the game had reached the Pacific.
With such an apparently rich long history, for many the question still arises, "What's it about?"
Lawn bowling is distinguished by use of a biased ball. That is, the ball is deliberately lop-sided so that it always curves toward the flat side as it slows down.
The object of the game is to obtain points by getting one's ball(s) closest to a small white ball, the "jack", which may be anywhere between 75 and 108 feet away. The skill, some say "the art", is to gauge the curve to achieve this even when an opponent may have guard balls blocking the "jack".
The ostensibly leisurely pace of a lawn bowling game suggests it may be only appropriate for the idle rich or long retired. This image does not hold in most countries of the world. The pace belies the tension of competition, the skill, and, yes, the art. As yet, lawn bowling has no champion like Tiger Woods, but as the game's popularity continues to increase, a Tiger Woods may emerge someday and bowl touchers (to the jack) as handily as Tiger lays approach shots on the pin.

Cobh Pastimes The Radio Interview On CRY 104FM
Somebody walked into the offices of CRY 104FM, the Youghal Community Radio station in Youghal, County Cork, Ireland, and told them of an Old Time Photographic Studio called Cobh Pastimes. CRY 104FM checked the Cobh Pastimes website and Facebook page and contacted Fionnughuala and asked her if she would like to come down to Youghal and be interviewd live on the radio. Fionnghuala and myself duly went down to Youghal where she was interviewed and I was able to video and capture this event for posterity. The people we met there were very nice and down to earth. Somebody walked into the offices of CRY 104FM, the Youghal Community Radio station in Youghal, County Cork, Ireland, and told them of an Old Time Photographic S...
Somebody walked into the offices of CRY 104FM, the Youghal Community Radio station in Youghal, County Cork, Ireland, and told them of an Old Time Photographic Studio called Cobh Pastimes. CRY 104FM checked the Cobh Pastimes website and Facebook page and contacted Fionnughuala and asked her if she would like to come down to Youghal and be interviewd live on the radio. Fionnghuala and myself duly went down to Youghal where she was interviewed and I was able to video and capture this event for posterity. The people we met there were very nice and down to earth. Kieran Kidney was the interviewer and afterwards we spoke at length to Pat Carroll about Cobh Pastimes and community radio in Youghal. Youghal is a seaside town about 25 miles up the coast east of Cobh. Moby Dick, the 1956 movie starring Gregory Peck was filmed here. Sir Walter Raleigh, of potato and Virginian tobacco fame was also here in the 16th. century and there is a hotel named after him.

Sir Walter Raleigh Biography
Sir Walter Raleigh was an English landed gentleman, writer, poet, soldier, politician, courtier, spy, and explorer. He was cousin to Sir Richard Grenville and younger half-brother of Sir Humphrey Gilbert. He is also well known for popularising tobacco in England. Raleigh was born to a Protestant family in Devon, the son of Walter Raleigh and Catherine Champernowne. Little is known of his early life, though he spent some time in Ireland, in Killua Castle, Clonmellon, County Westmeath, taking part in the suppression of rebellions and participating in the Siege of Smerwick. Later, he became a landlord of property confiscated from the native Irish. He rose rapidly in the favour of Queen Elizabeth I and was knighted in 1585. Little is known of his early life, though he spent some time in Ireland, in Killua Castle, Clonmellon, County Westmeath, taking part in the suppression of rebellions and participating in the Siege of Smerwick. Later, he became a landlord of property confiscated from the native Irish. He rose rapidly in the favour of Queen Elizabeth I and was knighted in 1585. Raleigh was instrumental in the English colonisation of North America and was granted a royal patent to explore Virginia, which paved the way for future English settlements. In 1591, he secretly married Elizabeth Throckmorton, one of the Queen's ladies-in-waiting, without the Queen's permission, for which he and his wife were sent to the Tower of London. After his release, they retired to his estate at Sherborne, Dorset.
In 1594, Raleigh heard of a "City of Gold" in South America and sailed to find it, publishing an exaggerated account of his experiences in a book that contributed to the legend of "El Dorado". After Queen Elizabeth died in 1603, Raleigh was again imprisoned in the Tower, this time for being involved in the Main Plot against King James I, who was not favourably disposed toward him. In 1616, he was released to lead a second expedition in search of El Dorado. This was unsuccessful, and men under his command ransacked a Spanish outpost. He returned to England and, to appease the Spanish, was arrested and executed in 1618.

Heres a virtual movie of the great Sir Walter Raleigh reading one of the 30 or so poems attributed to him,none of which were published within his lifetime "The Lie" Sir Walter Raleigh was a man in turmoil in the waning stages of his life, it was at this time where he was to be put to death for a precedent that in modern days would be considered extremely unfair. When writing "The Lie", Raleigh must have wanted to challenge the way of thinking and make a scything point. This feat was achieved by Raleigh in thirteen short stanzas. This poem, written like a persuasive commentary in no general direction but to all, utilizes multiple elements to portray the meaning. Clearly, no elements are more apparent than the tone and persona Raleigh creates with brilliant diction and fantastic structure. Raleigh's sarcastic and challenging tone shows throughout this poem in order to drive home a vivid point to leave the world with. The ultimate message of not to trust the status quo and to challenge an unjust way of thinking crystalizes by the end of his rhetoric.
First and foremost, the actual lie in this poem should not be thought of as a superficial lie, but something much more deeply rooted than that. When Raleigh writes of the lie, he means to challenge something at its own core and to prove it illogical, thus doing this by the use of his challenging and sarcastic tone. Raleigh writes his first example of this when he states, "Fear not to touch the best/The truth shall be thy warrant", a bold claim to begin such a poem with (lines 3-4). He wants these words and the meaning behind them to reach everybody no matter how noble or righteous the ear may be. His belief is that he had been wronged so he shall challenge everybody with the truth as his proof and his principle. Sir Raleigh continues by writing, "Go, since I needs must die/And give the world the lie" (lines 5-6). Here, he wills his words to live, since he must die, and enlighten the world of the falsities they are fed by their society. These words begin the challenging tone Raleigh decides to take throughout his poem.

Raleigh was born to a Protestant family in Devon, the son of Walter Raleigh and Catherine Champernowne. Little is known for certain of his early life, though he spent some time in Ireland, in Killua Castle, Clonmellon, County Westmeath, taking part in the suppression of rebellions and participating in the Siege of Smerwick. Later he became a landlord of properties confiscated from the Irish rebels. He rose rapidly in the favour of Queen Elizabeth I, and was knighted in 1585. He was involved in the early English colonisation of Virginia under a royal patent. In 1591 he secretly married Elizabeth Throckmorton, one of the Queen's ladies-in-waiting, without the Queen's permission, for which he and his wife were sent to the Tower of London. After his release, they retired to his estate at Sherborne, Dorset.
In 1594 Raleigh heard of a "City of Gold" in South America and sailed to find it, publishing an exaggerated account of his experiences in a book that contributed to the legend of "El Dorado". After Queen Elizabeth died in 1603 Raleigh was again imprisoned in the Tower, this time for allegedly being involved in the Main Plot against King James I, who was not favourably disposed toward him. In 1616 he was released to lead a second expedition in search of El Dorado. This was unsuccessful and men under his command ransacked a Spanish outpost. He returned to England and, to appease the Spanish, was arrested and executed in 1618.

Deep in the jungled hell of Big Tamtung, a forgotten island in the South China Seas, a miraculous ancient substance is found that will unlock the secrets of life on Earth-- Prima Materia, a fabled material that has been whispered about since Biblical times. Two centuries before, Charles Darwin discovered the last pool of Prima Materia on Big Tamtung but his discovery was suppressed by The School of Night, a secret society of scholars founded by Sir Walter Raleigh. Now, when a small group of scientists and fortune hunters explore the jungles of Big Tamtung, they must endure frightening tests of their ingenuity and courage, as they struggle against ancient terrors--a lost world of dinosaurs and a miracle older than time. With a non-human language spoken by Biblical patriarchs and coded secrets scribbled in the suppressed log of Darwin as their only clues, "Tombstone" Jack Kavanaugh and his partner, Augustus Crowe, discover secrets linking Prima Materia to the hidden history of humanity. The thing about El Dorado is . . . No, forget that. The thing about younger sisters is . . .
What’s an older sister to do? It’s not all fun fairs and ice-cream. Well, it is – but that’s beside the point. When one is in Luxembourg, there is a certain standard to maintain, and vacationing with Elves and Vampires is just so old school. But can Alex convince her younger sister, Jackie, of that? No, of course not, so she may as well get used to it.
But deep beneath the ancient city of Luxembourg there lies a secret. The Vampires believe it is protected by the Elf. The Elf believes it is protected by a prophecy concerning Alex and Jackie. And the sisters? They believe shoes in Luxembourg are too expensive.
Why are the Vampires going toe-to-toe with an Elf for the pleasure of the sisters’ company? Why does the Elf think Alex and Jackie can sing? And just who let Sir Walter Raleigh and the Conquistadors into this story?
To answer these questions will take all of the sisters’ cunning, bravery and imagination, as well as some souvenir shopping. Because this is the Elf of Luxembourg and this is an Alex and Jackie Adventure.

CANTOS started out as a call to SE London filmmakers to collaborate on a project called 'INFERNO' initially to travel & later on be Vj'd by Scanner and musician Laurie Anderson, with a narration by Colin Redgrave. this is one of several that we made on no-budget using a P170 with brilliant lighting cameraman Miguel Amortegui along with executive producer Christy Symington, ARBS and producer/director Tontxi Vazquez. Much came about in only one room and a couple of exterior locations around Deptford,London; home to Christopher Marlowe, Pepy's, Sir Walter Raleigh, and the original Cross Bones of St. Nicholas Church mixed with allegorical references to love, loss and chiaroscuro feelings of low light and Dante's voyage with Virgil. This is one of the tomes that is less abstract than the others in this continuous work still in progress. It also inspired "Elysian Kaffe" a UK foreign language -London based feature script by Tontxi Vazquez currently in pre-production w/ Dop Miguel Amortegui attached. With overtones to Inception, Altered States, L'Innocente, Anti-Christ and the writings during the Inquisition.

The film is a short drama piece set in the Tower Of London in the present day. A night guard by the name of George is a widowed Yorkshire man in his late 50s. He finds himself alienated from his peers due to his age and his somewhat recluse behaviour because of the loss of his wife. What the other guards do not realise is that George is haunted nightly by the ghosts who inhabit the building. "Bowls", "Bowling On The Green", "Bocce", "Lawn Bowling": by all of these names, lawn bowling has been around for several thousand years.
Some rules have likely changed over that time, but the fundamentals seem to be consistent, certainly since the game's historic record was started in the 14th Century.
Historians suggest the game made its way across Europe with Julius Caesar's centurions. At that time, and still today among Italians, the game was known as "bocce". By the 13th Century, "bowls", was entrenched in the British Isles. At the turn of the century, 1299 AD, the Southhampton Old Bowling Green Club was organized in England. The club remains active today, the oldest of record in the world.
Global politics threatened the game for a time. In the 14th Century, it was banned for commoners in France and England because archery, essential for defense, was losing popularity. The Scottish were having none of it. In Scotland the game continued uninterrupted, a favorite among even such legendary notables as Sir Walter Scott and Robert Burns. In Glasgow today 200 public bowling greens are in operation, including some enclosed greens for winter play.
Today's rules, the flat lawn, and even a dress code, seem to derive from the Scottish. Over time, the waves of Scottish emigrants took their game with them and established clubs in many countries, the colonies of the Western Hemisphere among them.
One famous story, and it has some credence, is that Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh were in the middle of a game when word reached them of the impending assault of the Spanish Armada. The story goes that Sir Francis insisted on finishing the game before setting sail to engage the Spanish; noble dedication, indeed. In fact, he had to wait for the incoming tide to peak before he could get his ship out of the harbor anyway.
The American Revolution and virulent anti-British feeling in the Colonies stifled the game for nearly a century. Luckily, the Canadians kept it alive, spreading it from coast to coast.
New Jersey gets credit for lawn bowling's resurrection in the United States, when a small private club was started in 1879. By 1899 the game had reached the Pacific.
With such an apparently rich long history, for many the question still arises, "What's it about?"
Lawn bowling is distinguished by use of a biased ball. That is, the ball is deliberately lop-sided so that it always curves toward the flat side as it slows down.
The object of the game is to obtain points by getting one's ball(s) closest to a small white ball, the "jack", which may be anywhere between 75 and 108 feet away. The skill, some say "the art", is to gauge the curve to achieve this even when an opponent may have guard balls blocking the "jack".
The ostensibly leisurely pace of a lawn bowling game suggests it may be only appropriate for the idle rich or long retired. This image does not hold in most countries of the world. The pace belies the tension of competition, the skill, and, yes, the art. As yet, lawn bowling has no champion like Tiger Woods, but as the game's popularity continues to increase, a Tiger Woods may emerge someday and bowl touchers (to the jack) as handily as Tiger lays approach shots on the pin.
