Documentary sequel to the multiaward winning film 500 Years Later.
Motherland is an epic documentary about the African continent from Ancient Kemet to the present. It is an overview of African history and contemporary issues but with the African people at the centre of the story. It is one of the first Pan-African features to be made.
MOTHERLAND (2015) is a Turkish feature film directed by Senem Tüzen and starring Esra Bezen Bilgin and Nihal Koldaş. It will premiere in the Critics' Week section of the 72nd Venice Film Festival.
Nesrin is an urban, middle-class woman recovering from a divorce. She’s quit her office job, abandoned her house in Istanbul, and come to the village house of her deceased grandmother to finish a novel and live out her childhood dream of being a writer. When her conservative and increasingly unhinged mother turns up uninvited and refuses to leave, Nesrin’s writing stalls and her fantasies of village life turn bitter as the two are forced to confront the darker corners of each other’s inner worlds.

"Nanny Cam: Xenophobia in the Motherland" was filmed entirely by Cindy Nashwa, the nanny/domestic worker of director Roger Horn and documents the feelings of those living in the townships of South Africa days after the start of the May 2008 xenophobic attacks that left 62 dead and displaced over 100,000. Cindy manages to keep a smile on her face at work despite her pain due to separation from her youngest daughter that had to be sent by bus to live with her mother across country out of fear for her safety.

Motherland is an epic documentary about the African continent from Ancient Egypt to the present. It is an overview of African history and contemporary issues but with the African people at the centre of the story. It is one of the first Pan-African features to be made.
The cast features key figures from the African political world.
Motherland is one of the only African documentaries to be mixed in 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround. A technology which is usually associated with Hollywood big production films. The producers claim to have innovated a new way of mixing music in 5.1 for film which they call split positioning.
The director and producers decided to remove all interviews with Desmond Tutu after his negative remarks regarding Zimbabwe and the African National Congress split. Tutu does appear in one film Our Story Our Voice by the same director.

In Motherland Afghanistan, Afghan American filmmaker Sedika Mojadidi journeys to the heart of this medical tragedy by following her father's return to Afghanistan to battle one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. Dr. Qudrat Mojadidi is an OB/GYN who was forced by political pressures to emigrate from Afghanistan to the U.S. in 1972. In 2003, nearly two years after the Taliban's fall, he is invited by the U.S. government to help rehabilitate the largest women's hospital in the country, Rabia Balkhi, now under U.S. sponsorship with a newly renamed Laura Bush Maternity Ward. He returns to his homeland with great hopes that with U.S. funding, he can help set in motion the large-scale changes necessary to stem the epidemic of maternal mortality in the country. But when Dr. Mojadidi arrives at the Laura Bush Maternity Ward in Kabul, a city still plagued with danger and unrest, he finds deplorable conditions, with limited supplies, and unsanitary facilities. As he tries to bring hope to the ward and make the best of archaic equipment and untrained staff, the film introduces the women behind the statistics and exposes how the U.S. government's Department of Health and Human Services has impacted Afghan lives, particularly in terms of the devastating epidemic of maternal mortality. "Nanny Cam: Xenophobia in the Motherland" was filmed entirely by Cindy Nashwa, the nanny/domestic worker of director Roger Horn and documents the feelings of those living in the townships of South Africa days after the start of the May 2008 xenophobic attacks that left 62 dead and displaced over 100,000. Cindy manages to keep a smile on her face at work despite her pain due to separation from her youngest daughter that had to be sent by bus to live with her mother across country out of fear for her safety.

When the United States invaded Afghanistan in October of 2001, Afghan hopes were high that democracy would bring enormous progress for Afghan women in the arena of health and education. But as of 2006 one of their most fundamental rights — adequate health care — has not been met.
In Motherland Afghanistan, Afghan American filmmaker Sedika Mojadidi journeys to the heart of this medical tragedy by following her father's return to Afghanistan to battle one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. Dr. Qudrat Mojadidi is an OB/GYN who was forced by political pressures to emigrate from Afghanistan to the U.S. in 1972. In 2003, nearly two years after the Taliban's fall, he is invited by the U.S. government to help rehabilitate the largest women's hospital in the country, Rabia Balkhi, now under U.S. sponsorship with a newly renamed Laura Bush Maternity Ward. He returns to his homeland with great hopes that with U.S. funding, he can help set in motion the large-scale changes necessary to stem the epidemic of maternal mortality in the country.
But when Dr. Mojadidi arrives at the Laura Bush Maternity Ward in Kabul, a city still plagued with danger and unrest, he finds deplorable conditions, with limited supplies, and unsanitary facilities. As he tries to bring hope to the ward and make the best of archaic equipment and untrained staff, the film introduces the women behind the statistics and exposes how the U.S. government's Department of Health and Human Services has impacted Afghan lives, particularly in terms of the devastating epidemic of maternal mortality.

Blending dance, text and live music in a series of constantly shifting vignettes, Motherland is a call to arms: one that sticks two fingers up at the shallow hypocrisies and inequalities of our time and asks 'what do we hope for now?'

The Third Motherland (Cyprus, 2011)
A documentary film by Costas M. Constantinou and Giorgos Kykkou Skordis
What does it mean to belong to a motherland? How does it feel to be caught in-between different motherlands? What burdens but also what rights and opportunities does belonging to an "other" motherland entail? How does ethnic conflict exacerbate identity problems and impact on the cultural heritage of small minority communities?
Filmed in Cyprus and Lebanon, The Third Motherland addresses these questions by following the story of the Cypriot Maronite community. The film reveals the dilemmas of identification and belonging and accounts for opposing feelings and beliefs within and beyond the community. This is a film about cultural loss, cooption, denial of rights and everyday social problems, but also of ethnic pride, cultural revival, communal joy and resistance.

A documentary film by Costas M. Constantinou and Giorgos Kykkou Skordis
What does it mean to belong to a motherland? How does it feel to be caught in-between different motherlands? What burdens but also what rights and opportunities does belonging to an "other" motherland entail? How does ethnic conflict exacerbate identity problems and impact on the cultural heritage of small minority communities?
Filmed in Cyprus and Lebanon, The Third Motherland addresses these questions by following the story of the Cypriot Maronite community. The film reveals the dilemmas of identification and belonging and accounts for opposing feelings and beliefs within and beyond the community. This is a film about cultural loss, cooption, denial of rights and everyday social problems, but also of ethnic pride, cultural revival, communal joy and resistance.
