Scary moments at Lukla, perhaps the most dangerous airport in the world. Take off (cockpit action and outside view) of Yeti Airlines Twin Otter 9N-AFE and Agni Air Dornier Do 228 9N-AHE (outside view) from Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla (2.860 m).
The sloped runway near Mount Everest has been constructed by Edmund Hillary in 1964. In 2001 the once stony airstrip was surfaced with tarmac. It ends with a mountainside, meaning that there are no go arounds, no second chances. During the trekking and climbing season domestic airlines operate up to 50 flights daily via that altiport. Lukla is gateway and starting place for most trekkers and climbers heading for the Mount Everest region in the Khumbu. The 30 minute flight from or to Kathmandu is an alternative to an one week hike via Jiri.
The airport has a dangerous approach through deep valleys which can only be performed by specially certified pilots. The airstrip is 450 m long and 20 m wide. It has a gradient of 12 % in order to help slow landing aircraft. Due to the high terrain immediately after the northeastern end of the runway go-around procedure on landing is not an option. To abort take-off is difficult as a steeply angled drop of about 2,000 feet (610 m) at the southwestern end of the runway runs into the valley below.

After trekking in the Mt. Everest region in Nepal, I got stuck in Luckla for a couple days whicle the fog rolled in. When I went to catch my plane, this happened. Upon landing in Lukla, the plane lost breaking ability and skid into the concrete wall at the end of the runway. It took some time to clear the runway because they don't have tow vehicles at the airport. Pretty crazy scene.

Lukla is a town in the Khumbu area of the Solukhumbu District in the Sagarmatha Zone of north-eastern Nepal. Situated at 2,860 metres (9,383 ft), it is a popular place for visitors to the Himalayas near Mount Everest to arrive. Although Lukla means place with many goats and sheep, few are found in the area these days.
Lukla contains a small airport servicing the region, and a variety of shops and lodges catering to tourists and trekkers, providing western-style meals and trail supplies.
From Lukla, most trekkers will take two days to reach Namche Bazaar, both an interesting village and an altitude acclimatization stop for those continuing on.
Lukla is served by the Tenzing-Hillary Airport. Weather permitting, twin-engined Dornier and Twin Otters make frequent daylight flights between Lukla and Kathmandu. Lukla Airport has a very short and steep airstrip, often compounded by hazardous weather, resulting in several fatal accidents. It has been called the most dangerous airport in the world.

Scary moments at Lukla, perhaps the most dangerous airport in the world. Take off (cockpit action and outside view) of Yeti Airlines Twin Otter 9N-AFE and Agni Air Dornier Do 228 9N-AHE (outside view) from Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla (2.860 m).
The sloped runway near Mount Everest has been constructed by Edmund Hillary in 1964. In 2001 the once stony airstrip was surfaced with tarmac. It ends with a mountainside, meaning that there are no go arounds, no second chances. During the trekking and climbing season domestic airlines operate up to 50 flights daily via that altiport. Lukla is gateway and starting place for most trekkers and climbers heading for the Mount Everest region in the Khumbu. The 30 minute flight from or to Kathmandu is an alternative to an one week hike via Jiri.
The airport has a dangerous approach through deep valleys which can only be performed by specially certified pilots. The airstrip is 450 m long and 20 m wide. It has a gradient of 12 % in order to help slow landing aircraft. Due to the high terrain immediately after the northeastern end of the runway go-around procedure on landing is not an option. To abort take-off is difficult as a steeply angled drop of about 2,000 feet (610 m) at the southwestern end of the runway runs into the valley below.

After trekking in the Mt. Everest region in Nepal, I got stuck in Luckla for a couple days whicle the fog rolled in. When I went to catch my plane, this happened. Upon landing in Lukla, the plane lost breaking ability and skid into the concrete wall at the end of the runway. It took some time to clear the runway because they don't have tow vehicles at the airport. Pretty crazy scene.

This video shows a twin otter STOL plane landing and taking off at Lukla airstrip in the Khumbu region of Nepal. This is how many trekkers to Everest start their journeys. This video was taken before the airstrip was tarmacked and was just a dirt strip. It is called the Ski jump as there is a 10% incline. There is also footage taken from high on the Zatra-la pass of a plane coming into land. It shows the vast scale of the Himalayas.

Landing at Lukla is a dramatic event....but that's another story. Our first day trekking took us through several villages on a level and slightly downhill trail to Phakding, where we spent the night. The next day we crossed the Dudh Kosi river five times and then made a steep climb up to the large and well-known village of Namche Bazaar. Our next day was a rest day, but quite memorable, thanks to a short hike to the ridge above town to get our first glimpse of 8000+ meter peaks of Everest and Lhotse, along with the lesser summits of Nuptse and Ama Dablam. (Note: for best viewing, set the quality to 720p or "Original".)

Flying - Helicopter Flight From Kathmandu To Lukla Airport In Nepal (April 11th, 2015) This flight is prior to our trek to Everest Base Camp and given we were only a trekking group of 6 we opted to fly to Lukla by Helicopter. Flight time was around 50 minutes. Flying in a tiny Dornier Do 228 that seats probably 15 people. Amazing Nepalese pilot taking off from the shortest runway and flying through the Himalayan mountains. There is a flight attendant to greet you but it was really funny because she while she's handing you the mint and cotton to stuff in your ear, she has to tilt her head totally sideways to not hit the roof of the plane. This flight is prior to our trek to Everest Base Camp and given we were only a trekking group of 6 we opted to fly to Lukla by Helicopter. Flight time was around 50 minutes. We arrived at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport (Domestic Terminal) at 6:30am and were soon shuttled over to the other side of the airport (check out the Video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VKyaHYvC9Y) where we boarded the chopper headed for Lukla's Tenzing-Hillary Airport which is situated at an altitude of 2860m (9380ft).

At one point, Lukla airport was the most dangerous airport in the world. It is a gateway to the Himalayas and anyone planning to see Mount Everest would have to experience flying through here. This was taken on the last day of my trip to see Mount Everest in Namche Bazaar. So I took a video when our plane was about to take off from the runway with a steep slope in the mountain. Another tick to my bucket list for my gap year world trip.
For those seeking adventure action and adrenalin rush, this is definitely a must-try in a World Travel.

In the past, Pokhara was an important trading link between India and Tibet but the trading of salt and wool came to an end after Tibet closed its doors to the outside world.Kathmandu is a melting pot of both race and religion, a metropolis in the heart of the Kingdom of Nepal, a country of snow-covered mountains inhabited by the gods. Kumari Chowk is the residence of the living goddess, Kumari, who is duly selected from childhood. She is not allowed to leave until puberty as her task is it affirm the king his power. Traditional ceremonies are celebrated throughout the year such as the Festival Of The Children that is a symbol of fertility and sexual purity. Patan is Nepal’s second largest city and has retained much of its original character due to its three hundred monasteries and temples. It is also one of the oldest settlements in Kathmandu Valley and during the 15th century was the capital of one of three kingdoms. Bhaktapur is the third ancient regal city of the thirty kilometre long Kathmandu Valley that has always been a prosperous trading route between China, Tibet and India. Through the golden gate of Sundhoka is the old royal palace complex. The Torana above the gate is richly gilded and features the ten-armed goddess, Taleju, and her loyal guards. Located on a 1,400 metre high hill, Swayanbunath is a Buddhist monastery complex and one of the most interesting sights in Nepal. The country’s oldest stupa dates back to the 5th century and is entered from an easterly direction up a staircase that contains three hundred and sixty-five steps. Endless rows of prayer mills and religious images are the instruments of the people’s deep faith. Hidden in a canyon and located on top of a mountain creek, Dakshinkali stands guard over the valley. This wonderful place is dedicated to the bloody goddess, Kali. The customs of the people in the ‘Kingdom On The Roof Of The World’ may seem somewhat strange. But this land of jungle and eternal snow has developed according to its own rich traditions and beliefs. Like magic!
