Israeli media reports Tuesday said that before hitting any targets in the northern Strip, the army intends dropping leaflets warning residents to flee and calling on Palestinian police to evacuate the area.
The buffer zone will not involve Israeli ground troops, but will be enforced through aerial surveillance. An Israeli army spokeswoman said no operational order toi implement the plan has so far been issued.
Palestinian militants have fired over 200 rockets at Israeli towns and villages adjacent to the Strip since Israeli pulled its troops and settlers out the Gaza Strip in August and September.
They have recently begun launching the rockets from settlements Israel abandoned in the northern Gaza Strip and militant groups said Monday they have upgraded the capability of their rockets to give them a range of up to 25 kilometres.
In the latest Israeli response to the rockets, Israeli Apache helicopters fired two missiles at targets in the northern Gaza Strip and Gaza City early Tuesday, according to Palestinian security sources and witnesses.
One rocket was fired at a building owned by the ruling Fatah party in the northern Gaza Strip, causing severe damage. No injuries were reported.
Another rocket was fired at a target also belonging to Fatah, in Gaza City. Witnesses said they heard a large explosion but reported no injuries.
In addition, F-16 warplanes fired at least three sonic bombs over Gaza City and the northern Gaza Strip causing panic among residents, mostly children.
