Dr
Robert Brown has a list of questions. He'd like some answers! They are both scientific questions and just things he'd like to know! He is a whirlwind of curiosity and a man who is in love with colours and light.
He is a scientist of photonics and optics, a creator, musician, traveller, brilliant communicator, in short, the perfect choice for the role of
CEO of the
American Institute of Physics (
AIP). (IDEAxME! podcast of interview below).
In just over a year he has begun the mammoth task of globalising the AIP, thereby driving worldwide membership and integrating with
Asia. What's more, he teaches photonics and has his eye on a new research project (seed funders sought), which could save millions of lives using laser light technology.
In addition to all of this and by no means least
Dr Brown is a former professional musician and a flautist.
Music is the other side of
Dr Brown's life. He is extremely passionate about it and furthermore, a huge fan of the "greatest living pianist",
Yuja Wang.
IDEAxME! interviews Dr Robert Brown, CEO of the American Institute of Physics and discovers the 2 sides of his life.
What is his human story?
How did he get to know so much?
What would he like to know now?
What would he like to ask Yuja Wang?
What's covered:
The
Big Ideas
Globalise AIP.
Embracing diversity at AIP.
Research proposal to see into people's brains using light technology.
3D Endoscopy as a potentially valuable surgical tool.
Teaching methods to tutor future creators, students of Physics.
Expertise in theory stimulation, experimental photonics and nano photonics, lasers, photo-detectors, optical fibres and systems.
The
Human Story
The Spark - a book read as a 3 year old.
Glandular fever and a persistent maths teacher who helped to change everything.
A favourite teacher who instilled in him a love for Physics.
A mentor he met in his early 20's, "without whom none of this would be possible".
The support of his parents.
20 years of teaching experience.
Professor of Nanotechnology,
Queens University Belfast and later
