What can a carpenter do?

There is no end to the type of work residential carpenters do. On Houzz you will find professionals that provide a full design and build carpentry service as well as those that focus on crafting timber furnishings. From installing wainscoting in your home’s hallway to creating a custom library, carpenters use expert carpentry skills to help with your home construction or home improvement project. You might want to employ your carpenter to construct a roof frame or architectural trims; to build a wall-to-wall bookcase or craft a bespoke kitchen table. They can also add a special artisan’s touch to normally incidental items such as door frames, picture frames and panelling, or fashion storage solutions in normally unused spaces such as under the stairs or in alcoves and niches. Often, carpenters will collaborate with contractors, designers and builders to bring your home project to completion. Here are some related professionals and vendors to complement the work of carpenters: Building Supplies, Kitchen & Bathroom Designers, General Contractors, Landscape Contractors, Home Builders.

Carpenters can specialise in different types of work, too. Rough carpenters, for instance, do things like house framing, formwork and structural work. A finishing carpenter, on the other hand, is someone you would hire for detailed work, like moulding and custom-made built-ins.

Questions to ask a prospective carpenter:

  • How long have you been in business?
  • Can you come up with a drawing of what I am asking for?
  • Can I have a detailed estimate?
