The US bomber force is destroyed on the ground and the Minuteman missiles in their silos in this highly realistic dramatization filmed with the unprecedented cooperation of the US Air Force. The people shown are the actual men and women of the US Air Force and Navy who would have been targeted.
This is a short version of the scenaio used in the 1979 documentary film, FIRST STRIKE, which examined how the Soviet SS-18 missile force together with submarine launched missiles might be used to destroy our strategic forces in a surprise, preemptive attack.

There is no doubt it was an incredible mission during the Falklands War. The RAF launched a Vulcan bomber 8,000-miles to put the runway at Port Stanley out of action.
A logistical nightmare, the Cold War-era Vulcan needed 13 fuel tankers to reach its target and return to the Ascension Islands. The 16-hour flight on April 30 and May 1, 1982, was the longest non-stop bombing mission in history.
The result was that one of its load of 1,000lb bombs hit the runway, denying the Argentines the the chance to use it for their fast jets – a key, early victory in the battle for air supremacy.

In nuclear strategy, a first strike is a preemptive surprise attack employing overwhelming force. First strike capability is a country's ability to defeat another nuclear power by destroying its arsenal to the point where the attacking country can survive the weakened retaliation while the opposing side is left unable to continue war. The preferred methodology is to attack the opponent's launch facilities and storage depots first. The strategy is called counterforce.
During the Cold War period, both superpowers, NATO and the Soviet Bloc, built massive nuclear arsenals, aimed, to a large extent, at each other. However, they were never used, as after a time, leaders on both sides of the Iron Curtain realized that global thermonuclear war would not be in either power's interest, as it would probably lead to the destruction of both sides, and possibly nuclear winter or other extinction level events.[citation needed] Therefore, at times, both sides refrained from deploying systems capable of unanswerable nuclear strikes against either side. However, in both nations, there were interests that benefited from the development and maintenance of first-strike weapons systems: what U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower termed the military-industrial complex; these forces encouraged the constant development of weapons systems of greater accuracy, power, and destruction. In addition, each side doubted the other side's commitment to not deploy first-strike weapons, or even in the event of their deployment, to not strike first. Some first-strike weapons were deployed; however like most nuclear weapons, they were never used.
