New York.
John F. Kennedy à New York, créé par l'architecte
Eero Saarinen.
Rachel K.

Foreword
Terminal 5 is an independent project organized for the public with the permission of the
Porth Authority of New York &
New Jersey.
The project is honored to take place at the premier masterpiece of air travel, Eero Saarinen's
TWA terminal at
John F. Kennedy Airport.
Saarinen's terminal was launched at the start of the jet age and has become an important landmark of the optimism of high modernism.
This Terminal 5 project occurs at the terminal's last moment of original design. The transformation of aviation technology has left the building unoccupied, with an adaptive partial use planned for after the exhibition.
The TWA terminal is represented in this catalogue with a combination of architectural and historical information. The « site » is not only Saarinen's terminal, but also the context of John F. Kennedy Airport in New York. «
JFK » has become a second signifier for Terminal 5, not only the location but as a historical reference to the era of the building's origins. There is something forever captured in the terminal that speaks of 1962.
The exhibition provides an international review of contemporary art, and while an organizing theme of air travel has brought these artists together, they respond with all types of media and represent a diversity of styles. The exhibition also includes an airport gift shop, airport media lounge and events, each with its own set of conditions. The result is a temporary event of plurality that communicates the scene of an airport.
After
100 years, air travel has transformed the world, resulting in airports in every country. Our project tries to consider its legacy and capture the present, providing a cornerstone event for the
21st century.
The Terminal 5 exhibition, together with the reprinted and new articles in this catalogue, present an ideology of the airport as a passing scene of everyday life.
Writers of all types, from fiction to philosophy, have responded. We hope to revive a fascination for air travel, architecture and contemporary art.
