Nature notes
Young birds just out of the nest are being fed by their parents everywhere. They are also making their first attempts at feeding themselves, something they will have to learn quickly since the adults will not help them for long. Young goldcrests in yews and cypresses are being fed assiduously on spiders both by their mother, with her lemon-yellow crest, and their father with his brilliant orange crest. The fledglings lack a crest, and are tiny dullish-green birds, who look rather pathetic beside their glittering parents. Pied wagtails can often be seen feeding their young on the ground in town streets, their long tails wagging up and down. The brown fledglings are also dull compared with the boldly plumaged, black-and-white adults, although their tails are already almost as long. Skylarks temporarily desert the sky, and come down to search for insects in the wheat fields or bean fields where their young, which are small, spotty birds, are lurking.
