Fishing in the Gulf Savannah is a wonderful experience for old mates and the family. It’s one of Australia’s great fishing regions, and there are many spots to launch a boat or try your luck on a river, beach or island. Fishing tours operate out of Karumba.
Anglers target blue salmon, barramundi, grunter, Red Emperor, sweetlip, coral trout, parrot fish and cod, barracuda, mackeral, tuna, queenfish, salmon, giant trevally, jewfish and more, and these can be supplemented with fresh mud crab and prawns.
Remember this is a remote area so safety is very important. Skippers should remember to check all mechanicals and safety gear, especially a local map, lifejackets and signalling equipment. Take care in the sun and carry plenty of water. Saltwater crocodiles inhabit the Gulf of Carpentaria and its catchments so stay back from the water’s edge and clean fish well away from the water. As always be sure to let someone know that you are going out on the water, where you will be and what time to expect you back.
Drop into local suppliers for anything you might need. Locals will help with tips on fishing spots and the bait or lures that are running hot. There is a closed season on Barramundi over October to January, and size limits and bag limits in place here to keep the fishery healthy.

With an area of 425,000 square kilometres, it is the region of northern Australia which is drained by its mighty seasonal rivers into the Gulf of Carpentaria. Gulf Country
The Gulf Country is the name given to the region of woodland and savanna grassland surrounding the Gulf of Carpentaria in north western Queensland and eastern Northern Territory on the north coast of Australia. The region is also called the Gulf Savannah. It contains large reserves of zinc, lead and silver. The Gulf Country is crossed by the Savannah Way highway.
Location and description
The Gulf Country is a block of dry savanna between the wetter areas of Arnhem Land and the Top End of the Northern territory to the west and the Cape York Peninsula of Far North Queensland to the east, while to the south and east lie upland plains of Mitchell grasses and the Einasleigh Uplands. The Northern Territory side of the area is the Gulf Fall area of sandstone slopes and gorges draining the interior uplands into the gulf. The main land uses in the Gulf Country are beef cattle and mining.
The region covers an area of 186,000 km2 (72,000 sq mi). The landscape is generally flat and low-lying tropical savannah cut through with rivers that carry the monsoon rains to the gulf and feed coastal mudflats and patches of rainforest. The Sir Edward Pellew Group of Islands and the Wellesley Islands lie off the gulf coast.

Savannah Way
The Savannah Way is a route of highways and major roads across the tropical savannahs of northern Australia, linking Cairns in Queensland with Broome in Western Australia. Promoted as a self-drive tourist route, it joins Cairns, Normanton, Borroloola, Katherine, Kununurra, Fitzroy Crossing, Derby and Broome.
Much of the route is Highway 1; however, much of it is on unsealed roads. It runs for a distance of 3,501 kilometres (2,175 mi). Parts of Savannah Way form part of the National Highway network.

Savanna
A savanna or savannah is a grassland ecosystem characterised by the trees being sufficiently widely spaced so that the canopy does not close. The open canopy allows sufficient light to reach the ground to support an unbroken herbaceous layer consisting primarily of grasses.
Savannas maintain an open canopy despite a high tree density. It is often believed that savannas feature widely spaced, scattered trees. However, in many savannas, tree densities are higher and trees are more regularly spaced than in forests. The South American savanna types cerrado sensu stricto and cerrado dense typically have densities of trees similar to or higher than that found in South American tropical forests, with savanna ranging 800–3300 trees/ha and adjacent forests with 800–2000 trees/ha. Similarly Guinean savanna has 129 trees/ha, compared to 103 for riparian forest, while Eastern Australian sclerophyll forests have average tree densities of approximately 100 per hectare, comparable to savannas in the same region.

Fishing in the Gulf Savannah is a wonderful experience for old mates and the family. It’s one of Australia’s great fishing regions, and there are many spots to launch a boat or try your luck on a river, beach or island. Fishing tours operate out of Karumba.
Anglers target blue salmon, barramundi, grunter, Red Emperor, sweetlip, coral trout, parrot fish and cod, barracuda, mackeral, tuna, queenfish, salmon, giant trevally, jewfish and more, and these can be supplemented with fresh mud crab and prawns.
Remember this is a remote area so safety is very important. Skippers should remember to check all mechanicals and safety gear, especially a local map, lifejackets and signalling equipment. Take care in the sun and carry plenty of water. Saltwater crocodiles inhabit the Gulf of Carpentaria and its catchments so stay back from the water’s edge and clean fish well away from the water. As always be sure to let someone know that you are going out on the water, where you will be and what time to expect you back.
Drop into local suppliers for anything you might need. Locals will help with tips on fishing spots and the bait or lures that are running hot. There is a closed season on Barramundi over October to January, and size limits and bag limits in place here to keep the fishery healthy.

In Vancouver, Canada’s pearl of the Pacific Ocean, begins an extraordinary journey along the Alexander Archipelago in the Gulf Of Alaska, a charming capital with European flair. In English Bay a giant metal crab guards the planetarium and by aquabus our journey travels across False Creek to Science World with its marvellous glass globe that contains a museum of modern art. Ketchikan is a small town located five hundred and twenty six nautical miles north of Vancouver and was founded by the Tlingit Indians. In the 1880’s the town based its economy on salmon and timber but today relies upon tourism. Since 1900, Juneau has been the capital city of Alaska, the forty ninth state of the U.S.A. In 1880, Joe Juneau, Richard Harris and their Tlingit Indian leader, Chief Kowee, discovered gold in Gold Creek and the gold rush began. Glacier Bay was completely covered by ice and glaciers around four thousand years ago during the Little Ice Age. The ice melted and the ever-changing glaciers are today situated within the arms of the bay which stretches almost a hundred kilometres to the north. Barrow is the northernmost point of inhabited North America and five hundred kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. The living conditions in the arctic wastelands are extremely harsh and most of the year it is bone-chillingly cold. Even today the promise of untamed nature and boundless freedom attracts us to America’s final wilderness. Alaska is full of wild extremes and stark contrasts, a fascinating land of pure adventure!

Like an ancient kingdom from the 'One Thousand And One Nights', it's the second largest state in the United Arab Emirates located on the northern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. The trading of dates, goats, pearls and fish brought the city much prosperity and it gradually developed into the largest trading centre in the Near East.
Maritime life has always played a significant role in the lives of those who live on the Arabian Gulf. With its triangular sails and a design that has remained unchanged for thousands of years, the dhow still sails these waters. Hundreds of them lie at anchor close to the old town on the banks of Dubai Creek.
No other city in the United Arab Emirates possesses so many fascinating contrasts. But the past is gradually merging with the present and portrays a new and harmonious image. Dubai's impressive silhouette is in stark contrast to the desert sand and sparkling sea.
The Deira district owes its prosperity to the various souks that were established there in the 19th century. At this time, Dubai was already an important trading city with almost 7,000 inhabitants. The number of stalls in the souk rose to more than 300 and a modest tax was imposed for the coffers of the local Sheikh.
Amid the desert surroundings, in front of the city gates, is the Nad Al Sheba Camel Course where the intrepid creatures of the desert are trained during the winter months and where the jockeys are young boys from Somalia and Pakistan.
Dusty gravel roads lead into the Hajar Mountains, part of the splendid mountain landscape in the eastern section of the Emirates.
Dubai's skyline has a new landmark, the Burj Al Arab, the only hotel in the world to have been awarded no less than seven stars! Built on a man-made island, its design is that of a sail bent by the wind.
Dubai, the height of luxury amid the desert sand is a glittering fairytale of the 21st century.

On Day 6 of our round the world trip for food, we were Muscat, Oman. We started off visiting some attractions in Muscat like the fish market and souk, then had some amazing Omani food, and visited a couple beaches. The highlight of the day for me was eating Omani street food mishkak and an Omani meal of camel and rice.
00:51 Chai karak and cheese bread in the car - A common Omani food breakfast is the combination of tea, which is usually called chai karak, and cheese bread. So after meeting up with Mustafa, we had a quick breakfast in the car before driving over to the Muscat fish market.
2:03 Muscat Fish Market - One of my favorite things to do in any destination is go to the market, and I love fish markets. Muscat, being right along the coast, has plenty of seafood, and so we walked around the Muscat fish market for a while. It’s not a huge fish market, but there’s plenty to see, and it’s a great attraction in Muscat.
4:00 Muttrah Souk - The Muttrah Souk is the traditional market / bazaar in Muscat, and it’s a wonderful place to walk around and get lost shopping and browsing through the narrow alleys. At the Muttrah Souk, Mustafa bought me a kuma, which is a type of hat that’s one of the Omani national hats.
7:42 Al Alam Palace (Sultan's Palace) - After visiting the souk, we drove over the the Al Alam Palace, also known as the Sultan's Palace. Although you can’t go inside, you can get a view of it from the outside.
8:30 Bait Al Zubair Museum - 2 OMR ($5.19) - The Bait Al Zubair Museum is one of the important museums in Muscat and it’s a great place to visit to learn about Omani culture.
9:49 Qantab Beach - There are many beautiful beaches in Oman, and before lunch, we took a drive over to Qantab Beach just to take a look. Qantab Beach is spectacular with sparkling clear water.
11:11 Bait Al Luban Restaurant - For lunch we went to an Omani food restaurant called Bait Al Luban Restaurant. Located near the fish market, it was a former inn that’s now been renovated into a restaurant that serves traditional Omani food and some fusion modern Omani food. The restaurant is popular with both locals and tourists, and although it was a little fancier than I had expected, it was very nice, and the food was delicious. Shuwa is one of the Omani food national dishes, include lamb and rice, and that was one of the best dishes of the meal.
19:13 Qurum Beach - After resting for a while in the afternoon, we then headed to Qurum Beach, one of the main beach attractions in Muscat that’s right within the city. It’s a great place especially when the sun dies down in the late afternoon.
20:03 Al Seeb for Mishkak - There’s not a lot of Omani street food when you’re walking around Muscat, but a short drive away is Al Seeb, and there are some stalls that are famous for serving Mishkak, which is Omani style grilled meat on skewers. All the mishkak was delicious, but I especially liked the mutton liver mishkak.
24:43 Camel Restaurant - I’m not sure what the name of this restaurant was, but they are known in Muscat for serving camel. You walk inside and they have a variety of Omani food dishes already prepared, and you can choose whatever you like. We ordered a combination of camel curry and fried camel with a huge bed of rice, salad, half a chicken and some yoghurt on the side. The camel blew me away with how delicious it was, and especially the chunks of camel hump were extraordinary.

In this video we visit the site of an 1880s hotel which serviced a Gulf River Port. The remote location saw a great deal of activity from 1880 until around the time of the First World War. We explore a vast (broken) bottle dump and then armed with the AT Pro, uncover some nice Victorian relics in addition to some modern coins and a Queen Elizabeth II Shilling. Operated by the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA), the Port of Savannah competes primarily with the Port of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina to the northeast, and the Port of Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Florida to the south. The GPA operates one other Atlantic seaport in Georgia, the Port of Brunswick, located at Brunswick, Georgia. There are three interior ports linked to the Gulf of Mexico, Port Bainbridge and Port Columbus, and one linked to the Port of Savannah by rail in Cordele, Georgia.
Between 2000 and 2005 alone, the Port of Savannah was the fastest-growing seaport in the United States, with a compounded annual growth rate of 16.5 percent (the national average is 9.7 percent). On July 30, 2007, the GPA announced that the Port of Savannah had a record year in fiscal 2007, becoming the fourth-busiest and fastest-growing container terminal in the U.S. The GPA handled more than 2.3 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) of container traffic during fiscal 2007– a 14.5 percent increase and a new record for containers handled at the Port of Savannah. In the past five years, the port's container traffic has jumped 55 percent from 1.5 million TEU handled in fiscal 2003 to 2.3 million TEU in fiscal 2007. By 2014, container traffic was up to 3 million TEU.
In response to the growth in traffic at both Savannah and the Port of Charleston, the Jasper Ocean Terminal, to be the largest port in the country when it is completed, is planned to be built upriver on the Savannah River by the mid 2020s.
Savannah is the oldest city in the U.S. state of Georgia and is the county seat of Chatham County. Established in 1733 on the Savannah River, the city of Savannah became the British colonial capital of the Province of Georgia and later the first state capital of Georgia. A strategic port city in the American Revolution and during the American Civil War, Savannah is today an industrial center and an important Atlantic seaport. It is Georgia's fifth-largest city and third-largest metropolitan area.
Each year Savannah attracts millions of visitors to its cobblestone streets, parks, and notable historic buildings: the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low (founder of the Girl Scouts of the USA), the Georgia Historical Society (the oldest continually operating historical society in the South), the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences (one of the South's first public museums), the First African Baptist Church (one of the oldest African-American Baptist congregations in the United States), Temple Mickve Israel (the third oldest synagogue in America), and the Central of Georgia Railway roundhouse complex (the oldest standing antebellum rail facility in America).
Savannah's downtown area, which includes the Savannah Historic District, the Savannah Victorian Historic District, and 22 parklike squares, is one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States (designated by the U.S. government in 1966). Its origins lie in the Gulf of Mexico and it carries the tropical waters from the Florida Strait to the great banks of the United States, where it heads eastward, carrying its warm waters to the borders of the North Atlantic. As soon as the tropical waters hit the Arctic Ocean, they cool abruptly and plunge towards the abyssal zone to form a loop, known as "thermohaline circulation." FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Chris Dierker, the father of the surviving victim of a shooting near the Colorado State University campus Thursday, confirmed that his daughter, Megan, was involved in the attack. Dierker, a student at the University of Colorado Boulder, was socializing with the group the night of the shooting.
