The Gulf Country is the name given to the region of woodland and savanna grassland surrounding the Gulf of Carpentaria in north western Queensland and eastern Northern Territory on the north coast of Australia. The region is also called the Gulf Savannah. It contains large reserves of zinc, lead and silver. The Gulf Country is crossed by the Savannah Way highway.
The Gulf Country is a block of dry savanna between the wetter areas of Arnhem Land and the Top End of the Northern territory to the west and the Cape York Peninsula of Far North Queensland to the east, while to the south and east lie upland plains of Mitchell grasses and the Einasleigh Uplands. The Northern Territory side of the area is the Gulf Fall area of sandstone slopes and gorges draining the interior uplands into the gulf. The main land uses in the Gulf Country are beef cattle and mining.
The region covers an area of 186,000 km2 (72,000 sq mi). The landscape is generally flat and low-lying tropical savannah cut through with rivers that carry the monsoon rains to the gulf and feed coastal mudflats and patches of rainforest. The Sir Edward Pellew Group of Islands and the Wellesley Islands lie off the gulf coast.
The Savannah Way is a route of highways and major roads across the tropical savannahs of northern Australia, linking Cairns in Queensland with Broome in Western Australia. Promoted as a self-drive tourist route, it joins Cairns, Normanton, Borroloola, Katherine, Kununurra, Fitzroy Crossing, Derby and Broome.
Much of the route is Highway 1; however, much of it is on unsealed roads. It runs for a distance of 3,501 kilometres (2,175 mi). Parts of Savannah Way form part of the National Highway network.

A savanna or savannah is a grassland ecosystem characterised by the trees being sufficiently widely spaced so that the canopy does not close. The open canopy allows sufficient light to reach the ground to support an unbroken herbaceous layer consisting primarily of grasses.
Savannas maintain an open canopy despite a high tree density. It is often believed that savannas feature widely spaced, scattered trees. However, in many savannas, tree densities are higher and trees are more regularly spaced than in forests. The South American savanna types cerrado sensu stricto and cerrado dense typically have densities of trees similar to or higher than that found in South American tropical forests, with savanna ranging 800–3300 trees/ha and adjacent forests with 800–2000 trees/ha. Similarly Guinean savanna has 129 trees/ha, compared to 103 for riparian forest, while Eastern Australian sclerophyll forests have average tree densities of approximately 100 per hectare, comparable to savannas in the same region.

The Government of Queensland (usually known as the Queensland Government) is the government of the Australian state of Queensland. It is established by the Constitution of Queensland, and its relationship with the Commonwealth is regulated by the Constitution of Australia.
The Government of Queensland operates under the Westminster system, a form of parliamentary government based on the model of the United Kingdom. The Governor of Queensland, as the representative of the Monarch, holds nominal power, although in practice only performs ceremonial duties. The Parliament of Queensland holds legislative power, while executive power lies with the Premier and Cabinet, and judicial power is exercised by a system of courts and tribunals.
The Parliament of Queensland is the state's legislature. It consists of the Monarch (represented by the Governor), and a single chamber; the Legislative Assembly. Queensland is the only Australian state with a unicameral parliament after a second chamber, the Legislative Council, was abolished in 1922.

Fishing in the Gulf Savannah is a wonderful experience for old mates and the family. It’s one of Australia’s great fishing regions, and there are many spots to launch a boat or try your luck on a river, beach or island. Fishing tours operate out of Karumba. Anglers target blue salmon, barramundi, grunter, Red Emperor, sweetlip, coral trout, parrot fish and cod, barracuda, mackeral, tuna, queenfish, salmon, giant trevally, jewfish and more, and these can be supplemented with fresh mud crab and prawns. Remember this is a remote area so safety is very important. Skippers should remember to check all mechanicals and safety gear, especially a local map, lifejackets and signalling equipment. Take care in the sun and carry plenty of water. Saltwater crocodiles inhabit the Gulf of Carpentari...

The Gulf Savannah - a land of real outback characters, bush pubs and wild yarns, wedge-tailed eagles and wallaroos, hot springs and cool rivers. Discover a rich history of Aboriginal culture, of explorers and pioneers, of gold rushes and railways. With an area of 425,000 square kilometres, it is the region of northern Australia which is drained by its mighty seasonal rivers into the Gulf of Carpentaria. It's bounded in the east by the Great Dividing Range and in the west by the Arnhem Land escarpment, some 1400kms across, and represents about half of northern Australia's tropical savannahs. The dry savannah landscape, typified by vast grass plains, open eucalypt forest and the ever present acacia (wattle), abounds with wildlife and is the epitome of the classic Australian scene.

Travel video about destination Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Dubai is a fairy-tale holiday paradise with romantic desert scenery and a long history. Like an ancient kingdom from the 'One Thousand And One Nights', it's the second largest state in the United Arab Emirates located on the northern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. The trading of dates, goats, pearls and fish brought the city much prosperity and it gradually developed into the largest trading centre in the Near East. Maritime life has always played a significant role in the lives of those who live on the Arabian Gulf. With its triangular sails and a design that has remained unchanged for thousands of years, the dhow still sails these waters. Hundreds of them lie at anchor close to the old town on the banks of Dubai Creek. ...

We spend 6 days in the red soil country of the North Queensland Goldfields prospecting for gold, searching for 'old timer's' relics and fossicking for gemstone agate. Featured relic finds include a Royal Navy Officer's jacket button dating from the Victorian era, and a 19th Century brass saddler's needle. On the final day, a bit of 'gully raking' and careful detecting with the Garrett AT Gold and AT Pro machines produces a lovely little sub-gram gold nugget. We hope you enjoy sharing our 6-day expedition to the Gulf Savannah Goldfields. Thanks for watching and subscribing! Colleen and Warren. www.nqexplorers.com www.garrettaustralia.com.au

The food truck scene in Savannah is lagging way behind many other cities of similar size. How long until they become part of the fabric of the food scene.
Possessed by a strong curiosity and, apparently, an even stronger digestive system, host Andrew Zimmern (a chef and food writer by trade) traverses the world in pursuit of unusual regional delicacies and startling native "delights" on the menu, as he tries to ferret out the weirdest foods a location has to offer -- possibly including ferret, actually. In addition to vivid descriptions of the taste and texture of the foods he discovers, Zimmern also provides a short history of each dish. Some of the locales Zimmern has traveled to include Ecuador, Taiwan, Iceland and Minnesota (because not all "unique" foods are found in exotic locations).
