Beyond Evil

Beyond Evil is a 1980 horror film directed by Herb Freed and starring John Saxon.

Plot

When an architect and his bride move into their dream home—a colonial mansion—they find that their new digs have a rich history of bloody violence. What's more, the manor is already occupied by a 100-year-old ghost with a thirst for vengeance and a yearning to oust the newlyweds from his haunt.

Beyond Good & Evil (video game)

Beyond Good & Evil is an action-adventure video game developed and published by Ubisoft and released in late 2003 for the PlayStation 2, Microsoft Windows, Xbox and GameCube platforms. A full HD re-mastered version of the game was released on Xbox Live Arcade in March 2011 and on PlayStation Network in June 2011. The story follows the adventures of Jade, an investigative reporter and martial artist, who works with a resistance movement to reveal a planet-wide alien conspiracy. The player controls Jade and allies, solving puzzles, fighting enemies, and obtaining photographic evidence.

Michel Ancel, creator of the Rayman series, envisioned the game as the first part of a trilogy. Beyond Good & Evil was a commercial failure, but was critically acclaimed, receiving a nomination for "Game of the Year" at the 2004 Game Developers Choice Awards. A sequel, Beyond Good & Evil 2, is currently in development.

Gameplay

Beyond Good & Evil is an action-adventure game with elements of puzzle-solving and stealth-based games. The player controls the protagonist, Jade, from a third-person perspective. Jade can run, move stealthily, jump over obstacles and pits, climb ladders, push or bash doors and objects, and flatten herself against walls. As Jade, the player investigates a number of installations in search of the truth about a war with an alien threat.

Good & Evil is a situation comedy which was broadcast in the United States by ABC from September 25, 1991 until October 30, 1991. The series was created by Susan Harris, and produced by Witt/Thomas/Harris Productions in association with Touchstone Television.

Synopsis

Good & Evil was the saga of two sisters, one an heir to the family cosmetics empire, the other a world-class scientist, and the backstabbing, jealousy, power struggles and other travails that occurred between them. Teri Garr starred as the "evil" sister, Denise Sandler, and Margaret Whitton as her "good" sister, Genevieve ("Genny"). Denise was icy and cutthroat, not just as CEO of Sandler Cosmetics, but in all other aspects of her life. However, it didn't always get her what she wanted. At work, she took great delight in mistreating her secretary Mary (Mary Gillis) and her dumb assistant Roger (Sherman Howard). Feeling long slighted by her family, Denise was now out to steal what she thought was rightfully hers—beginning with presidency of the company. Elegant mother Charlotte (Marian Seldes) still ruled over Sandler Cosmetics with an iron fist, and was all too knowing of what her ruthless daughter was capable of. Charlotte, vain and caught up in her own legacy, promised to give Denise the helm when she reached retirement age—but only when she looked 65 (her line of products made her look generations younger, in her eyes, at least). This was only the first motivation in Denise's extensive plotting. One of these plans was soon to include that of the man she felt destined to marry, dashing boyfriend Dr. Eric Haan (Lane Davies).

Good and evil

In religion, ethics, and philosophy, "good and evil" is a very common dichotomy. In cultures with Manichaean and Abrahamic religious influence, evil is usually perceived as the dualistic antagonistic opposite of good, in which good should prevail and evil should be defeated. In cultures with Buddhist spiritual influence, both good and evil are perceived as part of an antagonistic duality that itself must be overcome through achieving Śūnyatā meaning emptiness in the sense of recognition of good and evil being two opposing principles but not a reality, emptying the duality of them, and achieving a oneness.

Origin of the concept

Every language has a word expressing good in the sense of "having the right or desirable quality" (ἀρετή) and bad in the sense "undesirable". A sense of moral judgment and a distinction "right and wrong, good and bad" are cultural universals.

Beyond Good and Evil

Beyond Good and Evil: Prelude to a Philosophy of the Future (German: Jenseits von Gut und Böse: Vorspiel einer Philosophie der Zukunft) is a book by philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, first published in 1886.

It draws on and expands the ideas of his previous work, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, but with a more critical and polemical approach.

In Beyond Good and Evil, Nietzsche accuses past philosophers of lacking critical sense and blindly accepting dogmatic premises in their consideration of morality. Specifically, he accuses them of founding grand metaphysical systems upon the faith that the good man is the opposite of the evil man, rather than just a different expression of the same basic impulses that find more direct expression in the evil man. The work moves into the realm "beyond good and evil" in the sense of leaving behind the traditional morality which Nietzsche subjects to a destructive critique in favour of what he regards as an affirmative approach that fearlessly confronts the perspectival nature of knowledge and the perilous condition of the modern individual.
