For the sharks, this is a region of plenty. The basic design of their bodies is 300 million years old, and is literally perfect. But only one of them is called Death. Beyond the reef lies the kingdom of the great killer, the vast blue, the cold waters which are tinged with red when hunger demands. The great white shark, two thousand kilos of savage strength at the service of a mouth. A prodigious animal which, after hundreds of year of blind terror, we are now learning to admire. As we move further up the west coast of Australia, and approach the Tropic of Capricorn, corals are more in evidence, and start to form reefs. The coral reef is a very different ecosystem from that of the cold waters of the south. The coral reef is like a gigantic self-contained organism, in which energy passes from one layer to the next, with just two essential ingredients - the sun and the sea. The corals are specialists in poor waters like these, provided they are clear. We arrive in the dominions of the great white shark, the dark blue waters. And here, a tragedy, repeated every year, is about to occur. The sea lions sense that the breeding season is approaching. Along the coast of southern Australia and Tasmania, they begin to gather near suitable places, playing and swimming with their characteristic skill. The great white sharks like nothing better than a fresh fur seal – warm red meat, covered in delicious fat, clean and easy to digest. But the great white shark comes to its annual rendezvous with the seal cubs. All it need do is approach the colony, and wait for its chance. This individual is eight metres of sheer fury, and almost two thousand kilos of expert hunter. Though it is a fish, its blood is ten degrees centigrade warmer than the surrounding water, so its muscles perform better in attack. It detects the electrical fields generated by its victims, and it is equipped with a system of navigation based on the earth’s magnetic field. Its sense of smell is infallible, and the muscles around its eyes are warmer than the others, to give it optimum sight. The black legend of the white shark has been forged on the basis of exaggerations. Its fame as a monster, devourer of men, is far in excess of the reality. But, for decades, it has served as an excuse for uncontrolled fishing. Their impressive appearance made them the most sought after of all fisherman’s trophies. In reality, attacks on humans are rare and, strangely, many of the victims survive. Like these three mutilated men, who know spend their lives killing the white sharks that attacked them. The white shark possesses the curiosity of all prowlers. We now know that the white shark only attacks men by mistake or in self-defence, when in these cloudy waters it mistakes them for its normal prey, the sea lions. It is so elusive that, in seas where there are now hardly any seals, and the white sharks eat other prey that don’t resemble man, not only are there no attacks, but people don’t even suspect they exist. This fantastic animal is a symbol of the sea in which it lives, a sea which we are threatening, a much more deadly threat than the great white. It is relatively easy to defend the great white, but there are 350 other species of shark increasingly threatened over-fishing, with virtually no one paying any attention to their plight. No one knows how many answers lie in these waters, but one thing is certain, in the deep, vast blue, in the salty abyss in which all these creatures live, only one is king. Hey Guys, Bill here… when it comes to the world of sharks, there are some really amazing photos out there. In just a few clicks you can see anything from unbelievable Giant Tiger Sharks, to giant Megamouth Sharks, and giant Great Whites Galore… Some of the pictures showing people catching sharks are pretty amazing as well, like this one. It was sent it by Thedodge DD, TheVivid and Mackenzie Campbell just to name a few. It shows two guys bringing in one the biggest, most epic great white sharks I have ever seen. But if this picture real? Or is just another Big Fat Ocean Going Fake… Why don’t we get out our fishing gear and see what we can find out. Looking around on the internet, there are lots of copies of this picture, but information on who took it, where it was taken and when is not easy to come by. Lucky for me, billschannel has a new group of highly talented researchers called the “Chewey Piranhas.” And thanks to them, I have this, the official answer. Now before I can open this, I need to get your answer first - sorta like a game to help you test your real or fake skills - get it? Now, what I need you to do and is make up your mind right now and yell it out as loud as you can - real or fake. If you can’t do that, then just pause the video right here for second, go to the comment section, leave your answer there, then come back here and play the rest of the video. Ok you ready… and go! OK, did you do it? Good, so now without wasting one more second I’m going to get right to the answer here so we can see if you were right about what’s going on in this picture. And here we go The picture of the shark being hauled in by two fisherman has been examined and determined to be… a perfectly authentic rendition of what is usually referred to as a BFF… or BIG FAT FAKE… I kinda thought so, but what I’m wondering is, what is the real story behind this megahoax. Thanks to Chewy Piranaha researchers, Shelby Leanne, Prom Sobunsak, and Homza Andreas, we were able to track down the original photos used to make this tricky composite. The first photo is this one. It comes from the deck of a boat in the Cayman Islands called “Pocket Change.” Boat owner David Corbin posted the picture on his blog about a fishing trip from 2002. Now if you look closely at this picture, you see the fisherman actually has half a Baracuda in his hand. This is likely bait they are using. The second photo is this one… Despite a heroic search by Homza Andreas, we couldn’t find the original photographer, but for the purposes of the fake, we’re pretty certain it was just taken from this site which offers it as a wallpaper for your computer screen. We don’t have the name of the person who created the fake, but even of we could, we wouldn’t be able to honor top marks for this piece. If you look closely right here, you can see the half a barracuda still in the fisherman’s hand…. Sloppy… Ok well that is all the time I have for this video. Great White shark Vs Killer Whale - National Geographic WILD Amazing footage of a Killer Whale (Orca) attacking and partially eating a Great White shark, filmed by a whale watching tourist. During a whale watching trip for tourists near the marine sanctuary of the Farallon Islands, a Killer Whale was spotted and filmed as it broke the surface with a Great White shark gripped in its jaws. This was not only the first filming of such an incident, but also the first time marine biologists had even heard of such an attack. This incident lead to further research on the subject, finally convincing marine biologists that the Killer Whale was the top predator in all the oceans. Killer whales are very sophisticated and effective predators. Thirty-two cetacean species have been recorded as killer whale prey, from examining either stomach contents, scarring on the prey's body, or feeding activity. Groups even attack larger cetaceans such as minke whales, gray whales, and rarely sperm whales or blue whales. Hunting large whales usually takes several hours. Killer whales generally choose to attack young or weak animals, instead. However, a group of five or more may attack a healthy adult. When hunting a young whale, a group chases it and its mother until they wear out. Eventually, they separate the pair and surround the calf, preventing it from surfacing to breathe, drowning it. Pods of female sperm whales sometimes protect themselves by forming a protective circle around their calves with their flukes facing outwards, using them to repel the attackers. Rarely, large killer whale pods can overwhelm even adult female sperm whales. Adult bull sperm whales, which are large, powerful and aggressive when threatened, and fully grown adult blue whales, which are possibly too large to overwhelm, are not believed to be prey for killer whales. Other marine mammal prey species include nearly 20 species of seal, sea lion and fur seal. Walruses and sea otters are less frequently taken. Often, to avoid injury, killer whales disable their prey before killing and eating it. This may involve throwing it in the air, slapping it with their tails, ramming it, or breaching and landing on it. Sea lions are killed by head-butting or after a stunning blow from a tail fluke. In the Aleutian Islands, a decline in sea otter populations in the 1990s was controversially attributed by some scientists to killer whale predation, although with no direct evidence. The decline of sea otters followed a decline in harbour seal and Steller sea lion populations, the killer whale's preferred prey,[Note 1] which in turn may be substitutes for their original prey, now decimated by industrial whaling. In steeply banked beaches off Península Valdés, Argentina, and the Crozet Islands, killer whales feed on South American sea lions and southern elephant seals in shallow water, even beaching temporarily to grab prey before wriggling back to the sea. Beaching, usually fatal to cetaceans, is not an instinctive behavior, and can require years of practice for the young. "Wave-hunting" killer whales spy-hop to locate Weddell seals, crabeater seals and leopard seals resting on ice floes, and then swim in groups to create waves that wash over the floe. This washes the seal into the water, where other killer whales lie in wait. Killer whales have also been observed preying on terrestrial mammals, such as deer and moose swimming between islands off the northwest coast of North America. Killer whale cannibalism has also been reported based on analysis of stomach contents, but this is likely to be the result of scavenging remains dumped by whalers. One killer whale was also attacked by its companions after being shot. Although resident killer whales have never been observed to eat other marine mammals, they occasionally harass and kill porpoises and seals for no apparent reason.
