IMPACT OF GEOGRAPHY: Being located on the western part of
Africa, Senegal has a tropical climate, as well as lots of rolling plains of sand, and semi-desert. It borders
Guinea,
Mauritania, and
Gambia mostly. Senegal's main natural resources and exports are: peanuts, fish, iron ore, gold, titanium, phosphate, vegetables, fruit, flowers, forestry, oil, gas, and cotton. According to the
U.S. department of state; fish, rice, cotton, vegetables, fruit, flowers, livestock, and forestry have accounted for 12.4 percent of its
GDP. These natural resources are important to this countries economic growth and are important exports.
FOUNDATIONS OF TRADITIONAL SOCIETY: Although Senegal does have many different traditional cultural rituals and celebrations, these traditions have not significantly influenced the country overall.
EUROPEAN INFLUENCE: Initially,
France had control of Senegal up until 1960. On the
20th of June, 1960, France agreed upon a change of power in the country and gave Senegal
Independence.
The French influence on
Senegalese culture, and daily life is shown with the structure, and architectural form of the buildings, as well as the music and food.
CONTEMPORARY ISSUES:
SOCIAL/ECONOMIC: Because of the high illiteracy rates in Senegal and the limited amount of citizens receiving a proper education; it is quickly becoming more difficult for this country to keep up with the normal global community. In
2005, the net enrollment for Senegal educational facilities was only 69%, whereas the weighted average for all countries combined was 85.2%. The low education levels overall could have an effect on the countries future economy because the people may not be able to asses situations as efficiently and intelligently as they could with such pecuniary issues. For example, currently, Senegal is having very high unemployment rates.
POLITICAL:
Currently, Senegal is a country that follows a republic political style, with a president whom is replaced every five years. The president right now is,
Abdoulaye Wade.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION: Africa's internal diversity and outside influences affected its development and ability to be a part of the modern global community in various ways.
Major aspects, such as its vital exports like rice, cotton, phosphate, iron ore, gold, and peanuts, positively contribute to its economic growth, whereas, its lack of educational focus on its people is and will continue to lead to more economic problems. Currently, it is not too negatively affected by its outside influences like France, or the U.S., except for how the rising oil prices are affecting export prices. Essentially, Senegal has been positively affected by its internal diversity and outside influences.
