Garry Bushell (born 13 May 1955, Woolwich, South East London) is an English newspaper columnist, rock music journalist, television presenter, author and political activist. Bushell also sings in the Oi! band the Gonads and manages the New York City Oi! band Maninblack. Bushell's recurring topical themes are comedy, country and class. He has campaigned for an English Parliament, a Benny Hill statue and for variety and talent shows on TV. Although his TV column Bushell on the Box still appears weekly in the Daily Star Sunday, Bushell currently focuses on his band, novels and his one-man stand-up show.
The son of a fireman, Bushell attended Charlton Manor School and Colfe's School (which was then a grammar school). He first performed at secondary school in the group Pink Tent, which was heavily influenced by Monty Python. They wrote songs and comedy sketches; performing at parties and at each other's houses. Bushell was involved in the National Union of School Students and the Schools Action Union, a socialist organisation that had a strong situationist streak that led them to mix schoolboy hijinks with student activism. He worked for Shell as a messenger, and then the London Fire Brigade before attending North East London Polytechnic and the London College of Printing simultaneously. Bushell was an amateur boxer and a musician before becoming a full-time journalist.
Leonard John "Lenny" McLean (9 April 1949 – 28 July 1998), also known as "The Guv'nor," was an English bare-knuckle fighter, bouncer, criminal and prisoner, author, businessman, bodyguard, enforcer, weightlifter, television presenter and actor, and has been referred to as "the hardest man in Britain".
McLean's pugilist reputation began in the East End of London in the late 1960s and was sustained through to the mid-1980s. He has stated that he had been involved in up to 4,000 fight contests.
McLean claimed in his autobiography to have been well known in the criminal underworld. As a respected and feared figure, he often associated with such people as the Kray twins, Ronnie Biggs, Dave Courtney and Charles Bronson. He was also known in the London nightclub scene as a bouncer, where he often managed security.
In his later life, McLean became an actor, performing his most acclaimed role of 'Barry The Baptist' in Guy Ritchie's 1998 British gangster comedy film: Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
Son of a fireman, Garry trained under the legendary Paul Foot on the Socialist Worker – and was promptly placed under surveillance by the British security services. And they’re probably still watching him. As show business editor of The Sun, he became in Ross Kemp’s words, “the most feared critic in the business”. He’s written best-selling biographies and two gripping crime novels, and he is deeply associated with British youth cults, rock, punk and Ska bands. Garry has discovered new talent by the bucket-load, managed bands, championed working class comics and notched up a Number One hit. His #1 rated ITV series Bushell On The Box trounced Coronation Street for audience share. He hosts two shows on Litopia - the net's #1 indie music show THE HUNGRY AND THE HUNTED as well as the extrem...

Garry Bushell's recent publication "Time for Action" is a collection of original penned reviews, articles and interviews by the author that first appeared in Sounds newspaper between 1978 and 1981 on the Mod Revival (or Renewal as Bushell called it) , with additional notes added by Bushell. With Mod being in vogue again (it hasn't really been away since the second wave of Mod in 1978, just peaked at different times) media nostalgia has forgotten that Mod at times was quite ostracized by the media and the public. Being a Mod, was really being an outsider, and what gave these outcasts strength and belief was finding solace with other like minded people, fellow Mods. In addition Bushell was certainly the champion to bring Mod into the mainstream media, and the first writer to do so. He...

Secret Affair were at the forefront of the 1979 British Mod Revival. Like the Specials, the young Essex band's sound was rooted in sixties music but whereas the Specials were firmly grounded in bluebeat, Secret Affair's took their musical cue from Tamla Motown and Stax. Their cynicism came from direct exposure to major labels. Ian Page & David Cairns of Secret Affair Singer Ian Page's vision of a new street-savvy teens called Glory Boys found a ready audience and their tunes did the rest. As the first wave of punk receded, the new Mod bands braved rock press put-downs to put dance back into the charts. Secret Affair's motto was "gogo, not pogo". Their debut single, 'Time For Action', sold 198,000 copies in the UK alone; 'My World' did just as well and their first three albums went Top T...
Garry's guest tonight is Pauline Black -- the charismatic leading lady of 2-Tone, the musical movement that combined the anger of punk with the joyous bounce of Jamaican Ska. Arriving after the first waves of punk were receding, the new blue-beat bands put dancing and tunes back into pop. Pauline's combo The Selecter were one third of 2-Tone's Holy Trinity along with The Specials and Madness. She was one of the very few women in the male-dominated movement; but as a mixed-race girl growing up in an all-white working class part of Romford, Essex, Pauline was used to being an outsider -- and tough enough to confront the sexism as well as the racism of the early 1980s.
