John Rolfe (1585–1622) was one of the early English settlers of North America. He is credited with the first successful cultivation of tobacco as an export crop in the Colony of Virginia and is known as the husband of Pocahontas, daughter of the chief of the Powhatan Confederacy.
Rolfe was born in Heacham, Norfolk, England as the son of John Rolfe and Dorothea Mason, and was baptised on 6 May 1585. At the time, Spain held a virtual monopoly on the lucrative tobacco trade. Most Spanish colonies in the New World were located in southern climates more favourable to tobacco growth than the English settlements, notably Jamestown. As the consumption of tobacco had increased, the balance of trade between England and Spain began to be seriously affected. Rolfe was one of a number of businessmen who saw the opportunity to undercut Spanish imports by growing tobacco in England's new colony in Virginia. Rolfe had somehow obtained seeds to take with him from a special popular strain then being grown in Trinidad and South America, even though Spain had declared a penalty of death to anyone selling such seeds to a non-Spaniard.

Pocahontas (born Matoaka, known as Amonute, and later known as Rebecca Rolfe, c. 1595 – March 1617) was a Virginia Indian notable for her association with the colonial settlement at Jamestown, Virginia. Pocahontas was the daughter of Powhatan, the paramount chief of a network of tributary tribal nations in the Tsenacommacah, encompassing the Tidewater region of Virginia. In a well-known historical anecdote, she is said to have saved the life of an Indian captive, Englishman John Smith, in 1607 by placing her head upon his own when her father raised his war club to execute him. Some historians have suggested that this story, as told by Smith, is untrue.
Pocahontas was captured by the English during Anglo-Indian hostilities in 1613, and held for ransom. During her captivity, she converted to Christianity and took the name Rebecca. When the opportunity arose for her to return to her people, she chose to remain with the English. In April 1614, she married tobacco planter John Rolfe, and in January 1615, bore their son, Thomas Rolfe.

Plot: Captain Smith is spared his mutinous hanging sentence after captain Newport's ship arrives in 1607 to found Jamestown, an English colony in Virginia. The initially friendly natives, who have no personal property concept, turn hostile after a 'theft' is 'punished' violently on the spot. During an armed exploration, Smith is captured, but spared when the chief's favorite daughter Pocahontas pleads for the stranger who soon becomes her lover and learns to love their naive 'savage' way of harmonious life. Ultimately he returns to the grim fort, which would starve hadn't she arranged for Indian generosity. Alas, each side soon brands their own lover a traitor, so she is banished and he flogged as introduction to slavish toiling. Changes turn again, leading Smith to accept a northern-more mission and anglicized Pocahontas, believing him dead, becoming the mother of aristocratic new lover John Rolfe's son. They'll meet again for a finale in England.

Plot: Pocahontas is a beautiful, young Indian princess traveling with her husband, John Rolfe, and son, Thomas, to London to see John's birthplace. She is awed by the activity and the largeness of London. However, Pocahontas soon falls ill with the plague. Once, when Pocahontas and John are entering their hotel, they are approached by Captain John Smith. Pocahontas is extremely upset, having thought John was dead for a long time. Her husband apologizes on her behalf, explaining she is ill. She asks him to come again. Pocahontas is a young girl at the age of twelve when she first sees the English settlers of Jamestown. Curious and brave, Pocahontas befriends the colony and persuades her father to help them survive through the winter. This act of kindness brings peace between the Indians and the settlers. As food grows scarce for the settlers, they steal from the Indians. The Indians capture Captain John Smith, intending to kill him. Pocahontas saves his life by "claiming him for her own." Captain Smith sails shortly thereafter and is presumed dead. When Pocahontas grows into a young woman, she is captured by members of the Jamestown colony and is held as ransom for supplies from her father. John Rolfe is placed as her guard. As summer turns to fall, and fall turns to winter, John and Pocahontas fall in love. He teaches her to read the books John Smith had given her before he left. When Pocahontas is released to her father again, the settlers demand their supplies. Once again Pocahontas risks her life in order to maintain peace. Both the Indians and the settlers are forced to give in as the "peace of Pocahontas" is known.

Terrence Malick's cinematographic beautiful love story of Powhatan princess Pocahontas/Lady Rebecca and John Rolfe. PART 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sf75YvJ5POs&feature;=gp-n-y&google;_comment_id=z13fyrhqqrfzd5r2k223h3u4jzjdj11vf It's a pretty realistic portrayal of their biographies and some history as well, when the conquistadores started to colonize and occupy the once utopian country of the Native Americans. I really appreciate the beautiful poetic lines, the innocence, the nearness to mother nature and the beautiful soundtrack by James Horner. It's one of the few beautiful innocent romantic movies which in my honest opinion actually portrays realistic feelings and expressions in a similar situation. I think it is a story about true love, not being an infatuation such as the s...
Not enough videos are made about these two. The movie and their love is truly beautiful and shows you how their hard work and dedication to their relationship made their marriage and love stronger.

John Rolfe, Pocahontas' actual husband, was the entrepreneur who saved the failing English Colony that evolved into the United States long before the Pilgrims landed. Rolfe witnessed the failure of the socialist "common storehouse" system and its replacement with widespread ownership of private property by the common man. He was also a member of America's very first representative government, a little parliament called the Virginia General Assembly. This is America's founding story, one very few Americans know or are taught today. The presenter is a direct descendent of Pocahontas and Rolfe, fourteen generations later. Because sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who actually prefers John Rolfe to John Smith. I mean don't get me wrong, I liked John Smith, I really did. I don't mean to belittle his relationship with Pocahontas in the original, and I know everyone likes to think that they're "meant to be", and all, but really, how many people can claim to have only been with one person in their lives? They taught each other a lot about accepting people and views different from their own, and, being so similar in their search for satisfaction, I do believe they had a deep connection. But when it came down to it, they did not really know each other that well, and they were not suited to each other. Not in a long-term way. They were so similar in their need to follow the path "calling" them, and those paths...
Hey dudes and dudettes! HAPPY BIRTHDAY LEGOGIRL8! Do you even remember this? x'D This was one of the parts from my, unfortunately, failed YPIV. My idea was good enough, I think: "Give me a story and I'll choose the characters!", but it just failed... again... I'm not a request person obviously ._. I'll probably attempt a similar YPIV some day though, but it'll be with a different song and it'll be during a time when I have a lot of free time. Maybe during a summer vacation or something and then I just won't edit ANYTHING else xD Anyways, legogirl8's part was the only part that ever got finished out of the many great ideas I got for this song. There were some stories I might attempt as single projects, but not right now. Plot: Belle is a servant girl at the palace where prince John lives. T...

Without John Rolfe, the husband of Pocahontas, the United States would very likely never have come to exist. The failing English Colony Virginia was saved by Rolfe's entrepreneurial innovation. Private property ownership by the common man, the English Common Law, the parliamentary system...these and other things would have faded from North America without the pivotal John Rolfe. Richard Cheatham has been doing these customized, historically accurate, intellectually provocative and memorable presentations all over the USA and internationally since 1986.

On May 14, 1607, a group of roughly 100 members of a joint venture called the Virginia Company founded the first permanent English settlement in North America on the banks of the James River. Famine, disease and conflict with local Native American tribes in the first two years brought Jamestown to the brink of failure before the arrival of a new group of settlers and supplies in 1610. Tobacco became Virginia’s first profitable export, and a period of peace followed the marriage of colonist John Rolfe to Pocahontas, the daughter of an Algonquian chief. During the 1620s, Jamestown expanded from the area around the original James Fort into a New Town built to the east; it remained the capital of the Virginia colony until 1699.
