Smart TVs are very varied in their implementation. Generally the hardware is underpowered and the system itself doesn't feel all that snappy.
Well LG bought an OS from HP and decided to put it into all of their Smart TVs. It is marketed as a multitasking-friendly OS, but is it good? Linus gives you a rundown of WebOS and some of our thoughts on this latest generation of Smart TVs.

Never thought I'd actually get my hands one one of these. A definite piece of smartphone history. One mistake I made in the video: HP did not acquire Palm until April 2010. They promptly discontinued all Palm hardware a year later. webOS lives on in some LG smart TVs, though.

LG, Samsung, Sony e Philips são os principais players desse mercado, mas no fim das contas muitos usuários acabam escolhendo entre um modelo e outro pelo preço. Cada uma delas utiliza uma tecnologia diferente em suas telas, mas todas são boas o suficiente para que não seja o principal fator de compras, em especial quando a diferença de preços entre um modelo e outro é muito grande. Onde diferenciar uma e outra? O sistema operacional é um bom ponto de partida, e é por isso que a Smart+ TV da LG merece um pouco mais de atenção.
Pois bem. A LG comprou o WebOS, mas não para usar em sua linha móvel, já que ela já tem um bom posicionamento com o Android. A ideia é tentar oferecer uma nova experiência de uso em sua linha de televisões. Grande parte dos fabricantes utiliza sistemas proprietários em seus televisores, e geralmente a implementação deles não é lá aquelas coisas, e isso acaba estragando a experiência. Alguns modelos mais básicos da Philips, por exemplo, demoram quase 20 segundos para trocar o input de uma entrada HDMI para outra, e isso é bem chato.

It's been four years to the day that Palm's would-be savior platform, webOS, launched to much hoopla with the original Pre. And though the days since have been dark ones indeed for the all-but-dead platform, we thought it would be nice to indulge our nostalgia on this, the anniversary day of "20090606," with a Palm Pre unboxing.
Fortunately, our own Michael Fisher happened to have a like-new Palm Pre box, an artifact from a launch-day excursion to his local Sprint store all those years ago. And while the Pre within might charitably be called "well-loved" in terms of its physical condition, he still manages a signature screen protector peel-off - while spouting a bevy of mawkish memories only a fanboy could love. Is it a little over the top? Yes. Is webOS worth it? Also yes.

WebOS
LG's WebOS, also known as Open WebOS, HP WebOS, or Palm WebOS, (stylized as webOS) is a Linux kernel-based multitask operating system for smart devices like TVs, and smartwatches; and was formerly a mobile operating system. Initially developed by Palm, which was acquired by Hewlett-Packard, HP made the platform open source, and it became Open WebOS. The operating system was later sold to LG Electronics. HP still had plenty of patents related to WebOS. In 2014, Qualcomm has announced that it has acquired technology patents from HP, which includes the WebOS patents.
Various versions of WebOS have been featured on several devices, including Pre, Pixi, and Veer smartphones, TouchPad tablet, LG Smart TVs including LB870, LB730 and LED LB671, and smartwatches including LG Watch Urbane and the Audi smartwatch (prototype).
History
Palm
Palm launched WebOS, then called Palm WebOS, in January 2009 as the successor to Palm OS. The first WebOS device was the original Palm Pre, released by Sprint in June 2009. The Palm Pixi followed. Upgraded "Plus" versions of both Pre and Pixi were released on Verizon and AT&T.

1958–1960s
In 1958, LG Electronics was founded as GoldStar (Hangul:금성). It was established in the aftermath of the Korean War to provide the rebuilding nation with domestically-produced consumer electronics and home appliances. LG Electronics produced South Korea's first radios, TVs, refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners. GoldStar was one of the LG group with a sister company, Lak-Hui (pronounced "Lucky") Chemical Industrial Corp. which is now LG Chem and LG Households.

Well LG bought an OS from HP and decided to put it into all of their Smart TVs. It is marketed as a multitasking-friendly OS, but is it good? Linus gives you a rundown of WebOS and some of our thoughts on this latest generation of Smart TVs.

Cada uma delas utiliza uma tecnologia diferente em suas telas, mas todas são boas o suficiente para que não seja o principal fator de compras, em especial quando a diferença de preços entre um modelo e outro é muito grande. Onde diferenciar uma e outra? O sistema operacional é um bom ponto de partida, e é por isso que a Smart+ TV da LG merece um pouco mais de atenção.
Pois bem. A LG comprou o WebOS, mas não para usar em sua linha móvel, já que ela já tem um bom posicionamento com o Android. A ideia é tentar oferecer uma nova experiência de uso em sua linha de televisões. Grande parte dos fabricantes utiliza sistemas proprietários em seus televisores, e geralmente a implementação deles não é lá aquelas coisas, e isso acaba estragando a experiência. Alguns modelos mais básicos da Philips, por exemplo, demoram quase 20 segundos para trocar o input de uma entrada HDMI para outra, e isso é bem chato.

And though the days since have been dark ones indeed for the all-but-dead platform, we thought it would be nice to indulge our nostalgia on this, the anniversary day of "20090606," with a Palm Pre unboxing.
Fortunately, our own Michael Fisher happened to have a like-new Palm Pre box, an artifact from a launch-day excursion to his local Sprint store all those years ago. And while the Pre within might charitably be called "well-loved" in terms of its physical condition, he still manages a signature screen protector peel-off - while spouting a bevy of mawkish memories only a fanboy could love. Is it a little over the top? Yes. Is webOS worth it? Also yes.
