This summer, Howie Severino rides the Cordillera's killer mountain trails on his bike Bughaw to search for the legendary wild horses of Sagada.
Howie had been a constant visitor to Sagada in his youth, but this was his first visit in ten years. This homecoming to Sagada becomes a series of revelations about change -- in Sagada, in the country, and in Howie's aging self -- but also a journey to connect with the past.

The fresh producing backpacking show Byahe is a travelogue with a twist it does not only show viewers a must see places but it teaches them how to go and enjoy the places on a shoestring budget and travelling alone can be a lot of fun too.
Byahe's very first destination is the picturesque town of Sagada.
Nestled about 5,000 ft above sea level, Sagada is located 150 kilometers from Baguio City, north of Manila, Philippines.
It is one of the best tourist destinations for both foreign and local visitors due to its panaoramic views like caves, hanging coffins, under ground rivers, rice terraces, water falls, and its unique culture.

September 18-21, 2015
After of almost 12 hours land travel, we finally arrived in Sagada, part of the Mountain Province - Cordillera Region here in the Philippines.

After our trekking, we decided to take the risky "topload" which is basically riding at the top of the famous Philippine Jeepney on one of the country's scariest roads ever built.
Before heading back to Manila, we road down to Baguio and chill out.

Travel Philippines, Season 1, Ep (6/26). Sagada Mountain Province, 12 hrs drive north of Manila. Great hiking, spelunking (caving), and outdoor activities. A few hours travel further and you can see the Banaue Rice Terraces. Sagada is generally cheaper for food, shopping, and you can easily walk around or get a Jeepney / taxi as its a small town. Being a mountain region the climate is cold for a tropical country, so bring a rain jacket and sweater. Locals can be reserved and softly spoken (compared to Manila) but generally very nice and friendly.

Rock Inn & Cafe Hotel, we used the loft beds.
Echo Valley & The Hanging Coffins.
Sumaguing Underground Caving, recommend the longer 3hr tour, bring a LED flash-light and headlamp. Amazing experience!
Travel Tips:
Everyone spoke English and generally very friendly.
Its important to have photo ID for flights, hotels, and if police ask.
Its common for taxi drivers in Manila to try rip you off. Ask them nicely to put the meter on, or negotiate the price from the start if you know what it costs to your location. Otherwise find another taxi!
Shopping mall culture, locals love the mall for the aircon and to get out of the heat.
Locals often inflate prices for foreigners and tourists. Haggle and negotiate nicely. Be tough, but be respectful and polite about it. Shop around, you can often get a better price.
"Tip" can also mean bribe, so don't be afraid to ask what you're paying for upfront. Locals often do things to try help you, but then expect a tip.
The average basic worker earns PHP 300 a day. So tipping PHP 20 - 50 is fine.

Sagada is a 5th class municipality in the province of Mountain Province, Philippines. According to the latest census, it has a population of 10,930 people in 2,158 households.
It is located 275 km. north of Manila, 140 km. from Baguio, and it is adjacent to Bontoc, the provincial capital.
Sagada is famous for its "hanging coffins". This is a traditional way of burying people that is still utilized. Not everyone qualified to be buried this way; one had to, among other things, be married and have grandchildren.
Popular activities include trekking, exploring both caves and waterfalls, spelunking, bonfires, picnics, rappelling, visiting historical sites, nature hikes, and participating in tribal celebrations. Guides can be found upon registration at the tourist-office in Sagada Proper (the main town) for a small fee.
Sagada is politically subdivided into 19 barangays.
Sagada is nestled in a valley at the upper end of the Malitep tributary of the Chico River some one and a half kilometers above sea level in the central Cordillera; enveloped between the main Cordillera Ranges and the Ilocos Range. Mt. Data in the south and Mt. Kalawitan in the southeast pierce the horizon. Mt. Polis, Bessang and Mt. Tirad in the east, and Mt. Sisipitan in the north mark the Mountain Province - Abra boundary.

After of almost 12 hours land travel, we finally arrived in Sagada, part of the Mountain Province - Cordillera Region here in the Philippines.

Travel Philippines, Season 1, Ep (6/26). Sagada Mountain Province, 12 hrs drive north of Manila. Great hiking, spelunking (caving), and outdoor activities. A few hours travel further and you can see the Banaue Rice Terraces. Sagada is generally cheaper for food, shopping, and you can easily walk around or get a Jeepney / taxi as its a small town. Being a mountain region the climate is cold for a tropical country, so bring a rain jacket and sweater. Locals can be reserved and softly spoken (compared to Manila) but generally very nice and friendly.

Rock Inn & Cafe Hotel, we used the loft beds.
Echo Valley & The Hanging Coffins.
Sumaguing Underground Caving, recommend the longer 3hr tour, bring a LED flash-light and headlamp. Amazing experience!
Travel Tips:
Everyone spoke English and generally very friendly.
Its important to have photo ID for flights, hotels, and if police ask.
Its common for taxi drivers in Manila to try rip you off. Ask them nicely to put the meter on, or negotiate the price from the start if you know what it costs to your location. Otherwise find another taxi!
Shopping mall culture, locals love the mall for the aircon and to get out of the heat.
Locals often inflate prices for foreigners and tourists. Haggle and negotiate nicely. Be tough, but be respectful and polite about it. Shop around, you can often get a better price.
"Tip" can also mean bribe, so don't be afraid to ask what you're paying for upfront. Locals often do things to try help you, but then expect a tip.
The average basic worker earns PHP 300 a day. So tipping PHP 20 - 50 is fine.

PERHAPS it is just me, but it is the women who are the most visible and the strongest in the village. They are everywhere. by the window, by the patio lighting tobacco or chewing mama, by the communal tap washing clothes. Or if there are visitors, at Whang Od’s place. Kanau, Whang Od’s sister, made fun of Alex, who was only wearing a thin pair of underpants ... Some places like Sagada already banned the spitting of mama in public places ... ....
