Rakaa

Rakaa Taylor, better known by his stage names Rakaa, Rakaa Iriscience, and Iriscience, is a rapper from Los Angeles, California. He is a member of Dilated Peoples alongside Evidence and DJ Babu.

Career

Rakaa released the solo debut album, Crown of Thorns, on Decon in 2010. It featured vocal contributions from Aloe Blacc, KRS-One, Chali 2na, Evidence, and Fashawn. It was produced by Exile, DJ Babu, Oh No, El-P, and The Alchemist.

Dilated Peoples

Dilated Peoples is an American hip hop group from Los Angeles, California. They achieved notability in the underground hip hop community, although they have had little mainstream success in the US, with the exception of the song "This Way", a 2004 collaboration with Kanye West, Xzibit, and John Legend appearing in the music video. They reached the Top 40 of the UK Singles Chart with two tracks, "This Way" and "Worst Comes to Worst." Their members include DJ Babu (producer/DJ), Evidence (MC/producer) and Rakaa (MC). The group also received a publicity spike after their songs were featured in the 2003 video games Need for Speed: Underground and NBA Street Vol. 2.

History

Its members, DJ Babu from the DJ crew Beat Junkies; Evidence; and Rakaa joined together in 1992 and released "Third Degree" (1997) and "Work the Angles" (1998) on ABB Records, developing a solid fan base in the underground hip hop community. They had previously recorded an album titled Imagery, Battle Hymns & Political Poetry (1995) that was never released, although many fans still have it on bootlegged tapes. The group eventually signed with Capitol Records and released The Platform (2000) to more critical acclaim.

We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things. is the third studio album by Jason Mraz, released on May 12, 2008. The album peaked at number three in the Billboard 200, making it Mraz's highest-peaking album at the time. Mraz took the name of the album from a work by the artist David Shrigley.

Background and production

Progress of the recording of the album has been documented on the YouTube series "Crazy Man's Ju-ju" which contain clips from San Diego and London, where most of the album was made. "I'm Yours" was the first single from the album and was made available on iTunes, Zune Marketplace and Amazon.com on February 12, 2008. The album features collaborations with James Morrison on the track "Details in the Fabric" and with Colbie Caillat on the track "Lucky".

The album was preceded by three EPs released at monthly intervals for a limited time. We Sing. was released on March 18. We Dance. was released on April 15. The third installment, We Steal Things., was released as part of a digital bundle through iTunes, JasonMraz.com and AtlanticRecords.com on the release of the album on May 13, 2008. Up to March 17, 2010, the album had sold 1,491,736 copies in the U.S. and was certified Platinum by the RIAA.

"It Kills Me" is the title of an R&B single by Melanie Fiona and the second U.S. single (third in Canada after "Give It to Me Right" and "Bang Bang") from The Bridge. The track spent nine weeks at number-one on the US Billboard R&B singles chart. The track would also peak just outside the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at 43. Fiona received a Grammy nomination in the category of Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for the track, however the Grammy was awarded to Beyoncé for "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)". The song samples "(Hey There) Lonely Girl" by The Softones.
