Location Guide:
Edinburgh Cine & Video
Society - Many short scenes were filmed at ECVS, the Edinburgh Cine & Video Society, the oldest amateur filmmaking society in
Scotland. In it's early days, it was known as the
Waverley Cine Society which became the Edinburgh Cine Society in 1936. Since then, it has occupied premises in Fettes Row, in the
New Town of Edinburgh. The clubroom today consists of a kitchen, toilets, four main meeting rooms where one has been fitted out with cinema seats for viewing video and cine film projected onto the large screen from the clubs cine and video projectors.
Note that as of
2013, the club can project from blue-ray and project high definition video. The remaining three rooms consist of a blue screen facility for chroma key work, one is used as a lounge and the last as a multi-purpose meeting room.
Newbattle College & Grounds -- Mind of Obsession really benefits with the location choice for the
Williamson estate as part of the plot.
It's located just outside the town of
Dalkeith in
Midlothian, Edinburgh. It was founded in 1140 by monks from
Melrose Abbey. The patron was
King David 1st of Scotland along with his son,
Henry. It's church was dedicated in
1234. The abbey however was burned by
English royal forces in 1385 and once more in 1544. Part of the abbey was converted into a house which survives at the core of the current building. The house incorporates part of the south end of the monastic range. The house was modified and rebuilt by
John Milne in 1650,
William Burn in 1836 and
David Bryce in 1858.
King George fourth visited during his
Scottish tour of 1822 and the
King's Gate was build in his honor.
Duddingston Kirk -- Another equally impressive location used for the film alongside Newbattle, Duddingsron
Kirk is a
Parish Church in the
Church of Scotland, located adjacent to
Holyrood Park in
Duddingston Village, on the east side of the
City of Edinburgh.
Regular services are held at the kirk, conducted by the minister, Rev Dr
James A.P. Jack from
2001 who notably actually plays the minister himself in Mind of Obsession! Given it's proximity to central Edinburgh, Duddingston has long been a favourite location for many of the city's artists and professionals. The novelist
Walter Scott was ordained an elder at Duddingston in 1806.
Other locations --
Portobello, Edinburgh's seaside resort provided a number of locations used for shop exteriors mostly which really was under used in the production. Other locations used for the production was the
Media Village based on Jewel & Esk College's old campus in Dalkeith where the interrogation scenes took place. This is the location I wish I could alter and select a more suitable backdrop for those scenes. It was very cramp for the crew as well as looking unconvincing in the final film.
