Legacy of Kain spinoff Nosgoth is shutting down
Another Kain bites the dust
Nosgoth, a competitive multiplayer online game set in the world of Legacy of Kain, will shut down next month, according to a post on publisher Square Enix's community forum.
"It is with a heavy heart and an immense sense of sadness that we must announce the end of Nosgoth's development," the team behind the Windows PC game wrote in a post. Servers for the Windows PC game, which launched in Early Access on Steam in 2014, will be terminated May 31.
While the free-to-play team-based game will remain active until then, players are no longer able to purchase additional in-game content. All transactions made since March 1 will be refunded, the developer said in its farewell announcement.
Rocket League developer Psyonix worked on Nosgoth, which was born from another canceled project. Just last month, a member of the studio teased upcoming updates and a possible full release for the multiplayer title in an interview.
The multiplayer game stemmed from a similar component included in Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun, which was in development at Climax Studios. Square Enix canceled that game in 2012, after which it announced it was spinning off Nosgoth into its own release.
Following a closed test, an open beta for Nosgoth hit Steam Early Access in early 2015; its remained in beta since. According to Steam Charts, its userbase has fluctuated over the years. In the last 30 days, an average of 930 people were playing Nosgoth at a time.
The single-player, action-adventure Legacy of Kain franchise has yet to receive a proper release since the cancelation of Dead Sun. In a FAQ included with the Nosgoth cancelation announcement, its developer claims that "[a]ny future Legacy of Kain project will be considered independently of Nosgoth and on the merits of the proposals alone."
