UPDATE: A viewer wrote to say that he experienced some areas of scratching after trying this. I've never heard of it scratching before, so I just did a little Googling, and while there seem to be some people who question using steel wool, others swear by it. Some also think you should never us a razor blade on glass, and others do it all the time. One suggestion was to use wet steel wool (of course it will then rust, so pitch it afterwards). Another mentioned buying something called "Poli-Flex Rubberized Clayblock" for cleaning. Although I cannot guarantee that scratching is impossible, many people who've tried steel wool since seeing this video have been thrilled with the results. Either way, proceed slowly and with caution and at your own risk.

After a little time goes by, every windshield gets a little hazy. That goes double for autos that are towed right behind a large motorhome. Using our toad (towed car), we show you how to use fine steel wool, Rain-X and Invisible Glass to make your view just a little bit clearer.
Although our car's windshield has a lot of little nicks from over 9 years of being towed around North America, we still want to keep it as clear as possible. Regular washing can't remove the fine dirt that gets into the pores of the glass, so we use a little detailer's trick that we learned years ago: 0000 steel wool. While you'd expect that steel wool would scratch the glass, it's exactly the opposite. Just like furniture makers use extra-fine steel wool to rub out the surface of the wood after each coat of stain, it polishes glass the same way. Everybody we've told about this little detailing trick seemed really surprised that steel wool does not scratch glass.
NOTE: We mention using fine 0000 steel wool in this video. It is EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE, and care should be used in storing and using it. To see our video demonstrating how to start a fire using only steel wool and a 9-volt battery, click here:

Learn how to get your windshield super clean! The windows of your car or truck are what you look out of and it is important that they are clean. When you clean the windshield with my method the rain beads up and rolls off the windshield leaving great visibility. Bugs and bird poop come off really easy with one wipe of a towel. Even ice wont stick to the glass so no more scraping ice on those cold days!

Video tutorial on how to repair a stone chip on your windshield. Repairing a stone chip is a very inexpensive way to save your windshield before the crack can get worse. Stone chips in most cases will eventually cause your windshield to crack which in turn can be easily a few hundred dollars to replace, if not more depending on your vehicle. The risk of the windshield cracking from a chip can greatly increase over bumps in the road or an extreme difference in temperature such as driving in the winter with your windshield defroster blowing hot air. It is important to fix this right away. Also if a chip is exposed to the exterior elements for a longer period of time, it can fill up with dust, therefore not making the repair less flawless. This particular video I am working with here is a 2000 Volvo S70.

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-push pin or scriber
-clean cloth
-rubbing alcohol/isopropyl
-windshield stone chip repair kit (used in the video is Permatex Windshield Repair Kit #09103)
Procedure:
-first ensure that your windshield is dry as was don’t want any water or moisture contaminating the surface
-using the push pin or scriber, scrape away any loose damaged glass from the chipped area
-while doing this I would recommend having a vacuum cleaner going as this will pick up any glass debris
-next I like to wipe the damaged area down with rubbing alcohol, then allow it to evaporate
-place a cloth under the chipped area, this will catch any resin if it drips
-apply the white side of the double sided adhesive pad to the windshield, ensuring it's centered on the chip
-push from the center of the adhesive pad and slowly work your way out, this reduces the chance for any air pockets
-remove the green plastic off the adhesive pad, then attach the plastic pedestal, lining up both tabs on the pedestal and pad
-ensure the pedestal is pushed down where we don’t risk any air bubbles and it has adhered properly
-take the resin container, either cut or twist the end off, then apply 3/4 of the resin container into the pedestal and put the resin container in a safe location where it won’t drip on anything
-make sure the syringe is pushed all the way down, then insert it into the pedestal
-pull it up to the lowest notch, twist the pull cylinder, lock it onto the metal retaining clip, and allow it to sit in this position for 10 minutes
-after the 10min, gently break the syringe loose from the pedestal which will allow air into it
-push the syringe back into place, then unlock the pull cylinder, push it down until the upper lock position, and clip it into place
-allow it to sit in this position for 20 minutes
-once done, remove the syringe and watch out for any resin dripping, so have a cloth on hand
-using a razor knife, scrape off the foam adhesive, along with the pedestal
-make sure the surface is clean, then apply the remaining of the resin over the chipped area
-apply the plastic curing square over the area, gently press it into location with your finger, than smoothen out with a card or the backside of the razor to push out any air pockets
-park the vehicle in direct sunlight for 30 minutes to allow the uv light to cure the resin, if it’s cloudy, then wait 1 hour
-after the resin has cured, carefully remove the plastic curing square
-there will be some access resin material left over, use the razor to scrape that way

The windshield or windscreen of an aircraft, car, bus, motorbike or tram is the front window. Modern windshields are generally made of laminated safety glass, a type of treated glass, which consists of two (typically) curved sheets of glass with a plastic layer laminated between them for safety, and are bonded into the window frame. Motorbike windshields are often made of high-impact acrylic plastic.
Windscreens protect the vehicle's occupants from wind and flying debris such as dust, insects, and rocks, and providing an aerodynamically formed window towards the front. UV Coating may be applied to screen out harmful ultraviolet radiation. On motorbikes their main function is to shield the rider from wind, though not as completely as in a car, whereas on sports and racing motorcycles the main function is reducing drag when the rider assumes the optimal aerodynamic configuration with his or her body in unison with the machine, and does not shield the rider from wind when sitting upright.
Early windshields were made of ordinary window glass, but that could lead to serious injuries in the event of a crash. A series of lawsuits led up to the development of stronger windshields. The most notable example of this is the Pane vs. Ford case of 1917 that decided against Pane in that he was only injured through reckless driving. They were replaced with windshields made of toughened glass and were fitted in the frame using a rubber or neoprene seal. The hardened glass shattered into many mostly harmless fragments when the windshield broke. These windshields, however, could shatter from a simple stone chip. In 1919, Henry Ford solved the problem of flying debris by using the new French technology of glass laminating. Windshields made using this process were two layers of glass with a cellulose inner layer. This inner layer held the glass together when it fractured. Between 1919 and 1929, Ford ordered the use of laminated glass on all of his vehicles.

I've never heard of it scratching before, so I just did a little Googling, and while there seem to be some people who question using steel wool, others swear by it. Some also think you should never us a razor blade on glass, and others do it all the time. One suggestion was to use wet steel wool (of course it will then rust, so pitch it afterwards). Another mentioned buying something called "Poli-Flex Rubberized Clayblock" for cleaning. Although I cannot guarantee that scratching is impossible, many people who've tried steel wool since seeing this video have been thrilled with the results. Either way, proceed slowly and with caution and at your own risk. ------------------------------------------------------ After a little time goes by, every windshield gets a little hazy. That goes double for autos that are towed right behind a large motorhome. Using our toad (towed car), we show you how to use fine steel wool, Rain-X and Invisible Glass to make your view just a little bit clearer. Although our car's windshield has a lot of little nicks from over 9 years of being towed around North America, we still want to keep it as clear as possible. Regular washing can't remove the fine dirt that gets into the pores of the glass, so we use a little detailer's trick that we learned years ago: 0000 steel wool. While you'd expect that steel wool would scratch the glass, it's exactly the opposite. Just like furniture makers use extra-fine steel wool to rub out the surface of the wood after each coat of stain, it polishes glass the same way. Everybody we've told about this little detailing trick seemed really surprised that steel wool does not scratch glass. NOTE: We mention using fine 0000 steel wool in this video. It is EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE, and care should be used in storing and using it. Video tutorial on how to repair a stone chip on your windshield. Repairing a stone chip is a very inexpensive way to save your windshield before the crack can get worse. Stone chips in most cases will eventually cause your windshield to crack which in turn can be easily a few hundred dollars to replace, if not more depending on your vehicle. The risk of the windshield cracking from a chip can greatly increase over bumps in the road or an extreme difference in temperature such as driving in the winter with your windshield defroster blowing hot air. It is important to fix this right away. Also if a chip is exposed to the exterior elements for a longer period of time, it can fill up with dust, therefore not making the repair less flawless. This particular video I am working with here is a 2000 Volvo S70. Website: http://4diyers.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/4diyers Google Plus: https://plus.google.com/+4DIYers Twitter: https://twitter.com/4DIYers Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/4diyers/ Tumblr: http://4diyers.tumblr.com Pintrest: https://www.pinterest.com/4diyers/ Tools/Supplies Needed: -push pin or scriber -clean cloth -rubbing alcohol/isopropyl -windshield stone chip repair kit (used in the video is Permatex Windshield Repair Kit #09103) Procedure: -first ensure that your windshield is dry as was don’t want any water or moisture contaminating the surface -using the push pin or scriber, scrape away any loose damaged glass from the chipped area -while doing this I would recommend having a vacuum cleaner going as this will pick up any glass debris -next I like to wipe the damaged area down with rubbing alcohol, then allow it to evaporate -place a cloth under the chipped area, this will catch any resin if it drips -apply the white side of the double sided adhesive pad to the windshield, ensuring it's centered on the chip -push from the center of the adhesive pad and slowly work your way out, this reduces the chance for any air pockets -remove the green plastic off the adhesive pad, then attach the plastic pedestal, lining up both tabs on the pedestal and pad -ensure the pedestal is pushed down where we don’t risk any air bubbles and it has adhered properly -take the resin container, either cut or twist the end off, then apply 3/4 of the resin container into the pedestal and put the resin container in a safe location where it won’t drip on anything -make sure the syringe is pushed all the way down, then insert it into the pedestal -pull it up to the lowest notch, twist the pull cylinder, lock it onto the metal retaining clip, and allow it to sit in this position for 10 minutes -after the 10min, gently break the syringe loose from the pedestal which will allow air into it -push the syringe back into place, then unlock the pull cylinder, push it down until the upper lock position, and clip it into place -allow it to sit in this position for 20 minutes -once done, remove the syringe and watch out for any resin dripping, so have a cloth on hand -using a razor knife, scrape off the foam adhesive, along with the pedestal -make sure the surface is clean, then apply the remaining of the resin over the chipped area -apply the plastic curing square over the area, gently press it into location with your finger, than smoothen out with a card or the backside of the razor to push out any air pockets -park the vehicle in direct sunlight for 30 minutes to allow the uv light to cure the resin, if it’s cloudy, then wait 1 hour -after the resin has cured, carefully remove the plastic curing square -there will be some access resin material left over, use the razor to scrape that way Thank you to all those who watch my videos and support my content. How To Get Scratches Out Of Your Windshield
In this video I show the way I get scratches out of my windshield. There are several different way to do this, however this is the way I found works the best and gives the best results. I use a cleaner wax to polish the scratches so they appear like they are not there. I am not actually removing many of the scratches themselves. Please note that this is not a permanent solution, but a long term one. I do this to my car about once a year. CAUTION be careful about the products you use because can can actually make your windshield worse if you use a product that has abrasion to it. -

UPDATE: A viewer wrote to say that he experienced some areas of scratching after trying this. I've never heard of it scratching before, so I just did a little Googling, and while there seem to be some people who question using steel wool, others swear by it. Some also think you should never us a razor blade on glass, and others do it all the time. One suggestion was to use wet steel wool (of course it will then rust, so pitch it afterwards). Another mentioned buying something called "Poli-Flex Rubberized Clayblock" for cleaning. Although I cannot guarantee that scratching is impossible, many people who've tried steel wool since seeing this video have been thrilled with the results. Either way, proceed slowly and with caution and at your own risk.

After a little time goes by, every windshield gets a little hazy. That goes double for autos that are towed right behind a large motorhome. Using our toad (towed car), we show you how to use fine steel wool, Rain-X and Invisible Glass to make your view just a little bit clearer.
Although our car's windshield has a lot of little nicks from over 9 years of being towed around North America, we still want to keep it as clear as possible. Regular washing can't remove the fine dirt that gets into the pores of the glass, so we use a little detailer's trick that we learned years ago: 0000 steel wool. While you'd expect that steel wool would scratch the glass, it's exactly the opposite. Just like furniture makers use extra-fine steel wool to rub out the surface of the wood after each coat of stain, it polishes glass the same way. Everybody we've told about this little detailing trick seemed really surprised that steel wool does not scratch glass.
NOTE: We mention using fine 0000 steel wool in this video. It is EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE, and care should be used in storing and using it. To see our video demonstrating how to start a fire using only steel wool and a 9-volt battery, click here:

Learn how to get your windshield super clean! The windows of your car or truck are what you look out of and it is important that they are clean. When you clean the windshield with my method the rain beads up and rolls off the windshield leaving great visibility. Bugs and bird poop come off really easy with one wipe of a towel. Video tutorial on how to repair a stone chip on your windshield. Repairing a stone chip is a very inexpensive way to save your windshield before the crack can get worse. Stone chips in most cases will eventually cause your windshield to crack which in turn can be easily a few hundred dollars to replace, if not more depending on your vehicle. The risk of the windshield cracking from a chip can greatly increase over bumps in the road or an extreme difference in temperature such as driving in the winter with your windshield defroster blowing hot air. It is important to fix this right away. Also if a chip is exposed to the exterior elements for a longer period of time, it can fill up with dust, therefore not making the repair less flawless. This particular video I am working with here is a 2000 Volvo S70.

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-push pin or scriber
-clean cloth
-rubbing alcohol/isopropyl
-windshield stone chip repair kit (used in the video is Permatex Windshield Repair Kit #09103)
Procedure:
-first ensure that your windshield is dry as was don’t want any water or moisture contaminating the surface
-using the push pin or scriber, scrape away any loose damaged glass from the chipped area
-while doing this I would recommend having a vacuum cleaner going as this will pick up any glass debris
-next I like to wipe the damaged area down with rubbing alcohol, then allow it to evaporate
-place a cloth under the chipped area, this will catch any resin if it drips
-apply the white side of the double sided adhesive pad to the windshield, ensuring it's centered on the chip
-push from the center of the adhesive pad and slowly work your way out, this reduces the chance for any air pockets
-remove the green plastic off the adhesive pad, then attach the plastic pedestal, lining up both tabs on the pedestal and pad
-ensure the pedestal is pushed down where we don’t risk any air bubbles and it has adhered properly
-take the resin container, either cut or twist the end off, then apply 3/4 of the resin container into the pedestal and put the resin container in a safe location where it won’t drip on anything
-make sure the syringe is pushed all the way down, then insert it into the pedestal
-pull it up to the lowest notch, twist the pull cylinder, lock it onto the metal retaining clip, and allow it to sit in this position for 10 minutes
-after the 10min, gently break the syringe loose from the pedestal which will allow air into it
-push the syringe back into place, then unlock the pull cylinder, push it down until the upper lock position, and clip it into place
-allow it to sit in this position for 20 minutes
-once done, remove the syringe and watch out for any resin dripping, so have a cloth on hand
-using a razor knife, scrape off the foam adhesive, along with the pedestal
-make sure the surface is clean, then apply the remaining of the resin over the chipped area
-apply the plastic curing square over the area, gently press it into location with your finger, than smoothen out with a card or the backside of the razor to push out any air pockets
-park the vehicle in direct sunlight for 30 minutes to allow the uv light to cure the resin, if it’s cloudy, then wait 1 hour
-after the resin has cured, carefully remove the plastic curing square
-there will be some access resin material left over, use the razor to scrape that way

The windshield on my 2004 Honda Element has been cracked for years. After last winter the crack had reached half way across and I decided it was time to do something about it. It just so happens Kyle Kiss, son of Rich Kiss of Kiss auto glass, is a fan of my show. He stopped by the shop one day with his dad and I asked if they would be interested in making a video about replacing the windshield on my Element. The rest is in the video.

In this video I show the way I get scratches out of my windshield. There are several different way to do this, however this is the way I found works the best and gives the best results. From a distance our big, tall windshield might look clean, but when you take a closer look, you'll see that getting all of the bugs off can be difficult, especially at the top of a large, hard-to-reach windshield.
This is where our 0000 steel wool comes in. That's the extra-fine variety with the four zeros on the package, commonly used to refinish fine furniture. After our first video about using steel wool on the windshield, we got lots of questions about the potential for scratching the glass. Glass is harder than steel wool and won't scratch, but if it will make you more comfortable, try it in a discreet corner first. ;-) You'll simply be polishing the glass with the steel wool, to remove any bugs, road tar and tree sap.
Then it's time to apply one of our favorite products: Invisible Glass with Rain Repellent. It goes on like any ordinary window cleaner, but it makes water bead right off by sealing the pores in the glass. When driving down the highway, you can see right through the beads of water as they whisk off the windshield. Sometimes wipers aren't needed at all, even in pouring rain.
Simply spray it on and wipe it off with paper towels, newspaper or a clean rag... whichever you prefer. It's best to do this in the shade, but I shot this in bright sunshine for better video quality. If you apply Invisible Glass to a hot windshield in direct sunshine like I did here, you might get a few streaks, because it evaporates so quickly in the heat. Just buff with a soft cloth for a crystal clear shine.
Thoroughly cleaning and treating your windshield increases the clarity of the glass and helps water bead off when driving in the rain or snow. This increases visibility, making all of your vehicles safer on the road.
