(drier air cools down easier/faster than humid). air temperature during testing 80F (4% relative humidity). block of ice lasted 5 hours (larger blocks can last up to 10). to run the cooler 100% off-grid check out my solar ice making/freezer vids.

(small solar panel is optional). great for space cooling. 3 ways to power it: a solar panel, a battery or an automobile (using 12v socket "cig. plug"). this air cooler combines the durability of the "5 Gallon bucket air cooler" with the extra cooling power of the "styrofoam ice chest air cooler". specs: fan: 12VDC 10w 0.8A. solar panel: 15 watt (1 amp). works best in semi-dry or dry climates. In 1902, the first modern electrical air conditioning unit was invented by Willis Carrier in Buffalo, New York. After graduating from Cornell University, Carrier, a native of Angola, New York, found a job at the Buffalo Forge Company. While there, Carrier began experimenting with air conditioning as a way to solve an application problem for the Sackett-Wilhelms Lithographing and Publishing Company in Brooklyn, New York, and the first "air conditioner", designed and built in Buffalo by Carrier, began working on 17 July 1902. Designed to improve manufacturing process control in a printing plant, Carrier's invention controlled not only temperature but also humidity. Carrier used his knowledge of the heating of objects with steam and reversed the process. Instead of sending air through hot coils, he sent it through cold coils (ones filled with cold water). The air blowing over the cold coils cooled the air, and one could thereby control the amount of moisture the colder air could hold. In turn, the humidity in the room could be controlled. The low heat and humidity helped maintain consistent paper dimensions and ink alignment. Later, Carrier's technology was applied to increase productivity in the workplace, and The Carrier Air Conditioning Company of America was formed to meet rising demand. Over time, air conditioning came to be used to improve comfort in homes and automobiles as well. Residential sales expanded dramatically in the 1950s. -

(small solar panel is optional). great for space cooling. 3 ways to power it: a solar panel, a battery or an automobile (using 12v socket "cig. plug"). this air cooler combines the durability of the "5 Gallon bucket air cooler" with the extra cooling power of the "styrofoam ice chest air cooler". specs: fan: 12VDC 10w 0.8A. solar panel: 15 watt (1 amp). works best in semi-dry or dry climates. After graduating from Cornell University, Carrier, a native of Angola, New York, found a job at the Buffalo Forge Company. A mini-split is ideal when you have limited space in which to work or the location to be cooled and heated lacks sufficient ductwork. And with a heat pump, you can achieve solid energy efficiencies that will save money.
A basic mini-split is rated at least a 13 Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating and some models can reach even higher SEERs. These units provide effective air comfort where you need them to while maintaining low energy consumption.
A Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pump is not the most difficult HVAC system to install, but it is not something to take lightly. Proper installation is key for achieving the best energy efficiencies the unit can produce.
By design, installation of the interior unit of a mini-split is relatively simplified. The most difficult electrical work is already done and housed safely within the system. What is required is properly mounting the unit itself on a wall and then running the various connections to the outdoor unit.
Start by removing the wall mount from the back of the mini-split interior unit. Then, pick out a spot on a wall surface where you want the unit to be secured. After you have decided, use a level to mark out drill points and secure the wall mount according to instructions. You will have to drill holes that are level with one another. Through this process, be sure you have marked the area so that you know where you are going to drill.
Measure twice, cut once. It's a carpenter's rule and it works here. For us, we want to measure twice and drill each hole once. One thing our interior walls probably do not need are unnecessary holes.
After you have measured, drilled and installed the wall bracket, make sure the latch points are secure. The last thing you want is for the mini-split to tumble off the wall. Once the wall mount is ready, carefully unfold the refrigerant pipe making sure not to damage the tube in the process. Next, drill the hole for condensate drainage making sure to angle the hole slightly downward so gravity can do its job.
It is important to note that you are going to combine the condensate tube, refrigerant line and conduit wire in the same bundle so you only have to have one hole going through your wall. Secure these together using tape and make sure the bundle is tightly packed to reduce needed space and making running them through the wall easier.
Be careful not to damage the components in this process.
Now, once the wall mount is ready, the condensate tube is attached, the refrigerant line is secure, plugs are installed, and the electrical cable has been run through you are ready to mount the interior unit on the wall. Lift the unit in to place making sure that the tube/line/cable combination pushes smoothly through the opening you drilled.
After attachment to the wall mount the interior unit should be firmly secure and your refrigerant line, condensate tube and electrical cables should be run through the wall.
It is time to install the outdoor unit.
On a mini-split heat pump, the outdoor unit is composed of a condenser, efficient compressor and installation kit.
Before beginning, you will need to decide how you want to place the outdoor unit. You can put it on a pad, mount it on an exterior wall or place it on a rooftop. Wherever you want to place your outdoor unit always remember to make sure it is properly secured before you make any connections between the interior and outdoor systems. For this video, we will be installing the outdoor unit on a pad.
When the outdoor unit is properly placed on the pad and anchored you may remove the flare nuts from the surface valves. If you are using prefabricated line sets, then the flare nuts may be discarded, but if not they may be flared onto the lines that will be connected to the system.
Before you start doing any cutting you need to make sure all the pieces are ready and you need to consider the proper tubing configuration. If the condenser is mounted higher than the air handler you must insure that there will be proper oil return to the compressor. You will need an inverted trap immediately exiting the condenser unit and additional oil traps for every 16 feet of vertical pipe run.
With those requirements met, you are ready to cut. After you cut the copper tubing, be sure to clean the interior of the tube so there are no fragments remaining inside from the cutting process. Excess material left over may cause corrosion. Also, cut carefully so you do not dent the copper tubing.

We had a great time fishing and catching up. My Mom bought me a mini air conditioner which is hopefully going to change my life and the pace of projects here at the off grid solar camper. Ok, a full day and a night of testing the solar powered air conditioning system proves that it can and does work. My stuff costs about $2,000. You may pay a bit more depending on where you look.
In this video I show you where to get solar panels as low as 50 cents per watt. Yes, it is true. You may find that after shipping its $1 per watt. That is cheap and good. Its still cheaper than the full retails of $5 to $10 per watt.
My solar panels are off craigslist at 50 cents per watt. 800 watts = $400
My charge controller retails for about 500
The batteries are about 100 each = $600
The inverter retails for about 500 but you can get a tiger claw pure sine wave inverter off amazon for about $179. I read lots of good reviews about them.
Check craigslist for second hand or discounted, scratched or dented solar panels.
Check sunelec.com for low priced solar panels.

My 1987 Dodge Daytona EV will be attending the Electric Vehicle Converter's Convention (EVCCON) out in Cape Girardeau, Missouri very shortly, during the first full week of August in one of the hottest summers of recent memory.
The ice chest based automotive air conditioner concept test run from the previous video, using the nearly empty engine compartment of an old 1988 Dodge Daytona Pacifica, was more-or-less successful.
Unfortunately, with all of the batteries and other components crammed into the engine compartment of my current Daytona EV, there is just not enough space to fit even a modest sized ice chest in there as well. So, I started looking for a way to make this fascinating air conditioning setup actually work in that vehicle as well, somehow...
Ironically, what I came up with was a completely portable ice chest solution that I can theoretically place in the rear hatch area of the Daytona (on top of the rear battery box) which ended up being more-or-less identical to the unit built by the Instructables user "CameronSS" from which I got the whole idea from in the first place:

This video covers my particular take on this rather clever concept. Here is a list of the parts/cost of each component that I ended up using:
1x - Portable Ice Chest (~$20)
1x - 1200 GPH Bilge Pump (~$38)

1x - 5' PVC Reinforced Braided Vinyl Tubing (~$1 per foot)
5x - Hose Clamps (~$1 ea)
3x - Plastic Dryer Vent Covers (~$13 ea)
3x - 120mm PC Cooling Fans (~$15 ea)
1x - Automotive Mini-Fuse Holder (~$3)
1x - 12v DC Vehicle Adapter Plug (~$6)
So all of that works out to about $225, plus some other incidentals, such as a couple of used Molex connectors, a few zip ties, some screws, etc. I already had the computer fans kicking around, so the total cost for me personally on this project was closer to $180.

I spent the weekend with friends and church, so please forgive me for not having any videos. My friend left this afternoon. He was a visitor from NYC who I have not seen in a year. We had a great time fishing and catching up.
My Mom bought me a mini air conditioner which is hopefully going to change my life and the pace of projects here at the off grid solar camper.
It is a 500 watt air conditioner rated at 5,000 BTU and only measures 12.5 inches high by 16 wide.
My solar panels are 600 watts and the AC only runs about 5 minutes out of every 15 minutes. It pulls 500 watts while it runs the compressor and then the fan runs, blowing the cold air off the coils and into the room.
This makes the air conditioner perfect for off grid solar applications.
The air conditioner worked well when the sun was shining, but after the sun was off the solar panels, my inverter kept shutting off due to low battery voltage. I think that the wires going to the inverter are too small. The wires were getting warm to the touch so I think I need larger wires in order to run the AC.
