A Constant Structure is a chord progression where chords of the same quality but with different root notes are played consecutively
- The chords can be any quality – Maj7, min7, V7
They generally follow
- A constant root pattern (often in intervals of 3rds, but can really move in by any interval)
- The movement of the melody
- You can use any voicing – but keeping the same voicing against all the chords
The symmetry in chord quality & root movement gives the progression a nice structured sound while creating a shifting tonal centre which sounds non-function...

The symmetry in chord quality & root movement gives the progression a nice structured sound while creating a shifting tonal centre which sounds non-functional; that is, it sounds like there is no fixed tonal centre or key. The chord progression isn’t moving towards an ultimate tonic chord. It could finish on any chord and sound complete. This is because of the symmetry in chord quality and root movement.
You could, of course, analyse this progression functionally and argue that you’re changing key from F#m to Em to Dm to Cm. But that’s not really what it sounds like, it sounds like there is NO fixed and ultimate key or tonic chord – it sounds non-functional.
Using constant structures is a great way to reharmonise a song because it’s very structurally strong and give it a nice modern jazz/non-functional sound. Constant Structures were popularised by Herbie Hancock and Bill Evans in many of their reharmonisations and compositions.
Constant Structures can also be found in the written out chord progressions of many songs, such as:
Tell Me a Bedtime Story ~ Herbie Hancock
Stolen Moments ~ Oliver Nelson
Time Remembered ~ Bill Evans

In this series of videos I cover jazz piano voicings. I'll go through a number of different voicings which will make any jazz song sound strong and professional.
This Jazz Piano Tutorial is about Upper Structures. Upper Structures are a nice sounding and simple way to voice altered dominant chords. They are essentially triad over a tritone.
They always have a 3rd & 7th in Left Hand (which is a tritone apart in V7) and some kind of triad in your right hand. And which triad you play is indicated by the number of the Upper Structure. And you can play any inversion of that triad.
Combining Quartal, So What and Upper Structure Voicings can sound very smooth and are used in a lot of modern jazz piano.

Ya like jazz? You will!
There are 7 levels of Jazz Harmony, and we'll explore each of them through reharmonizing the chorus of one of my favorite tunes from 2019 - Lizzo's Juice. Thanks to Jae Soto for singing!
OUTRO TRACK (Dilla Beat + Intonalist Harmony)
https://adamneelymusic.bandcamp.com/track/it-aint-my-fault
Level 1 - "Bell Pepper" - II-V’s and other basic tonal movements
Level 2 - "Poblano Pepper" - Sub V’s and other stuff
Level 3 - "Jalepeño Pepper" - Crazy chromatic extensions
Level 4 - "Piri Piri Pepper"- Constant Structures and Pedal Point
Level 5 - "Habenero Pepper"- Free non-functional harmony
Level 6 - "Ghost Pepper"- Liberated Dissonance
Level 7 - "???" - Xenharmony
These 7 levels aren't meant to be exhaustive in terms of the harmonic techniques of jazz musicians - there really are way too many to get into for a single YouTube video - but they can be useful as a general guide to the FEELING of different kinds of harmonic ideas. As an added bonus, they're roughly in chronological order in terms of when each level occurred on the timeline of jazz history, although no single musician was ever working so formally.

Jazz4Piano is a jazz channel with jazzpiano videos, tips, tricks & tutorials about playing jazzpiano. Jazz4piano has tutorials about playing various jazzpiano riffs & licks. How to get the right fingering of the jazz licks. Tutorials about playing different scales in jazz, improvisation techniques, how to explore the harmonic possibilities, reharmonizing jazz melodies.
Jazz4Piano also features Martin Sjolte Starson playing original solos over famous jazzpiano standarts along with some original compositions too.
=============Martin Sjolte Starson=============
My name is Martin Sjolte Starson and the founder of Jazz4Piano. I am a pianist, composer, Hypnotherapist and author. I have been playing jazz for a decade. Playing jazz piano is for me playing with all the infinite variations of colours, that jazzmusic offers. In my years of playing I have developed a rather vertical orientated pianostyle, with the emphasis on chords.
I think my style has evolved partly from a quite limited piano technique derived from a finger disability but also finding "myself" easier in the flavours of the jazz harmonics rather in long horisontal melody linies.
My vision with the channel jazz4piano is to give you, dear listener some valuable tips, tricks and information about jazzpiano, that can improve your playing and make it more fun to be a jazzpiano player:-)
I would like to thank you for listening and visiting my channel and maybe leaving some feedback/new ideas/comments/ for me. The feedback is very important and I can use it to make this channel even better...
Peace & relaxation from Martin Sjolte Starson

This jazz piano cover version of “The Christmas Song” was arranged for solo Jazz Piano and played & recorded on my upright Yamaha B3. I did a bit of post remastering with the sound, to make it sound full & fat like a nice Christmas dinner should taste:-) Cheers, hope you enjoy.

=============Martin Sjolte Starson=============

How i make my video tutorials:
http://joerundpiano.com/2014/02/11/how-i-make-my-video-tutorials/
This is a piano demonstration of me playing the spiritual Nobody Knows The Trouble I¨ve Seen.
Its for educational purposes and I¨ve tried to include different voicings and reharmonzations throughout the piece.
A lot of the voicings are upper structure voicings and triton substitutes. In depth analyses of the different voicing used are available at in Norwegian at
http://joerundpiano.com/2013/11/08/nobody-knows/
The Recording is done on a MOTIF XF 8. The Sheet music was created in Siblius 6. I used Ableton Live for audio and midi recording; Quick Time for Screen Capture and VMPK for displaying the midi notes.
