Should Sullenberger have tried to turn back to LGA?
On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 (AWE1549), an Airbus A320 piloted by Captain Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles, made an unpowered emergency water landing in the Hudson River after multiple bird strikes caused both jet engines to fail. All 155 passengers and crew aboard the Airbus A320 successfully evacuated from the partially submerged airframe as it sank into the river; they were rescued by nearby watercraft. Several occupants suffered injuries, a few of them serious, but only one required hospitalization overnight. The incident came to be known as the "Miracle on the Hudson", and Captain Sullenberger and the crew were hailed as heroes.
The aircraft was an Airbus A320-200, registered N106US, operating as a US Airways scheduled domestic commercial passenger flight from LaGuardia Airport in New York City to Charlotte Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, North Carolina. About three minutes into the flight, at local time 3:27 p.m. EST, the plane struck a flock of Canada geese during its initial climb out from LaGuardia, just northeast of the George Washington Bridge. The bird strike caused both jet engines to quickly lose power.
As the aircraft lost altitude, the flight deck crew decided that the plane could not reach the closest airfield. They turned southbound and glided over the Hudson, finally ditching the airliner off midtown Manhattan near the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum, about three minutes after losing power.
The entire crew of Flight 1549 was awarded the Master's Medal of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators. The award citations read, "This emergency ditching and evacuation, with the loss of no lives, is a heroic and unique aviation achievement." National Transportation Safety Board member Kitty Higgins described the feat as "the most successful ditching in aviation history."

The Federal Aviation Administration released audio recordings this morning that reveal the communications between air traffic control and US Airways flight 1549 just before it splashed down into the Hudson River Jan. 15, 2009.
The FAA releases audio tapes revealing details of flight 1549 crash.
is the transcript of that conversation beginning about two minutes after the flight departed from LaGuardia Airport. Flight 1549 is referred to as "Cactus" in its communications with air traffic control.

New York--The Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board released Coast Guard footage today of the U.S. Airways passenger plane as it conducted an emergency landing into the Hudson River Jan. 15, 2009.
The Coast Guard is conducting a safety zone around the plane, which is now located at Battery Park City, N.Y., while a commercial salvage team is working to remove the plane from the water.
The Coast Guard, New York Police and Fire Departments, New York Waterways and Circle Line ferry rescue teams launched a multi-asset response yesterday when the plane ditched onto the Hudson River, at approximately 3:30 p.m.
Upon initial notification, Coast Guard Sector New York launched a fleet of small rescue boats and the 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Ridley was diverted to the scene. The Coast Guard Cutter Katherine Walker also arrived on scene to assist in the search and rescue efforts and enforcement of the safety zones.
Three Coast Guard helicopters from Air Station Atlantic City, N.J., and one from Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., worked closely with New York City Police air assets to provide aerial support.
The video was captured by Coast Guard Vessel Traffic Service. The purpose of a VTS is to provide active monitoring and navigational advice for vessels in particularly confined and busy waterways. There are two main types of VTS, surveillance and non-surveillance.
Surveillance systems consist of one or more land-based sensors
(including radar, Automated Identification Systems and closed circuit television sites), which output their signals to a central location where operators monitor and manage vessel traffic movement. Non-surveillance systems consist of one or more reporting points at which ships are required to report their identity, course, speed, and other data to the monitoring authority.
The Coast Guard operates 12 Vessel Traffic Centers (VTC): Prince William Sound, Puget Sound, Valdez, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles/Long Beach, Houston-Galveston, Berwick Bay, Louisville, Saint Mary's River, Port Arthur, Tampa, and New York.

U.S. Airways Flight 1549 at the 15 January 2009. A few minutes after takeoff due to problems with the engines because of bird strikes on the Hudson River ditching. All 150 passengers and five crew members survived the accident.
Flight 1549 is a daily scheduled domestic flight of U.S. Airways from LaGuardia Airport in New York City to Seattle / Tacoma, Washington, with a stop at the airport in Charlotte, North Carolina. On 15 January 2009 at 15:32 clock time (20:32 UTC clock) ended the first leg of the flight six minutes after taking off with a ditching in the Hudson River between New York City and Weehawken, New Jersey.
Although the fuselage and wings roughly remained intact, the aircraft had to be written off as a total loss.

On January 15, 2009, the aircraft flying this route, an Airbus A320-214, was successfully ditched in the Hudson River adjacent to midtown Manhattan six minutes after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport after being disabled by striking a flock of Canada geese during its initial climb out. The incident became known as the "Miracle On The Hudson".
The bird strike, which occurred just northeast of the George Washington Bridge about three minutes into the flight, resulted in an immediate and complete loss of thrust from both engines. When the crew of the aircraft determined that they would be unable to reliably reach any airfield, they turned southbound and glided over the Hudson, finally ditching the airliner near the USS Intrepid museum about three minutes after losing power. All 155 occupants safely evacuated the airliner, which was still virtually intact though partially submerged and slowly sinking, and were quickly rescued by nearby ferries and other watercraft.

U.S. Airways Flight 1549 at the 15 January 2009. A few minutes after takeoff due to problems with the engines because of bird strikes on the Hudson River ditching. All 150 passengers and five crew members survived the accident. Flight 1549 is a daily scheduled domestic flight of U.S. Airways from LaGuardia Airport in New York City to Seattle / Tacoma, Washington, with a stop at the airport in Charlotte, North Carolina. On 15 January 2009 at 15:32 clock time (20:32 UTC clock) ended the first leg of the flight six minutes after taking off with a ditching in the Hudson River between New York City and Weehawken, New Jersey. Although the fuselage and wings roughly remained intact, the aircraft had to be written off as a total loss.

(including radar, Automated Identification Systems and closed circuit television sites), which output their signals to a central location where operators monitor and manage vessel traffic movement. U.S. Airways Flight 1549 at the 15 January 2009. A few minutes after takeoff due to problems with the engines because of bird strikes on the Hudson River ditching. All 150 passengers and five crew members survived the accident.
Flight 1549 is a daily scheduled domestic flight of U.S. Airways from LaGuardia Airport in New York City to Seattle / Tacoma, Washington, with a stop at the airport in Charlotte, North Carolina. On 15 January 2009 at 15:32 clock time (20:32 UTC clock) ended the first leg of the flight six minutes after taking off with a ditching in the Hudson River between New York City and Weehawken, New Jersey.
Although the fuselage and wings roughly remained intact, the aircraft had to be written off as a total loss.
