Making Manuscripts
An illuminated manuscript is a book written and decorated completely by hand. Illuminated manuscripts were among the most precious objects produced in the Middle Ages and the early Renaissance, primarily in monasteries and courts. Society's rulers--emperors, kings, dukes, cardinals, and bishops--commissioned the most splendid manuscripts.

From Wikipedia:
Gerd Puin was the head of a restoration project, commissioned by the Yemeni government, which spent a significant amount of time examining the ancient Qur'anic manuscripts discovered in Sana'a, Yemen, in 1972. According to writer Toby Lester, his examination revealed "unconventional verse orderings, minor textual variations, and rare styles of orthography and artistic embellishment." The scriptures were written in the early Hijazi Arabic script, matching the pieces of the earliest Qur'ans known to exist. The papyrus on which some of the text appears shows clear signs of earlier use, being that previous, scraped-off writings are also visible on it, though this does not necessarily demonstrate modifications to the over-all text of the Qur'an.
More than 15,000 sheets of the Yemeni Qur'ans have painstakingly been cleaned, treated, sorted, and photographed and 35,000 microfilmed photos have been made of the manuscripts. Some of Puin's initial remarks on his findings are found in his essay titled the "Observations on Early Qur'an Manuscripts in San'a" which has been republished in the book What the Koran Really Says by Ibn Warraq.

Illuminated manuscripts from the Middle Ages are significant for the literary texts they preserve. But they are also important, historically and culturally, for their illustrations of the life of Christ. These artistic representations tell tales of their own, and the visual stories are not always found in the corresponding texts. A careful examination of these images shows clearly and convincingly that medieval artists were not only familiar with the stories of the canonical Gospels, but also with many noncanonical apocryphal tales of Jesus. The apocryphal stories, in some instances, were understood to be "Gospel truth" on par with accounts found in Scripture. Bart D. Ehrman, the James A. Gray Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, explores both canonical and apocryphal narratives of Jesus's life.

As French forces start to leave Mali, this report takes a spectacular journey through the country, exploring the aftermath of a reign of terror and asking whether the locals are confident the coast is now clear.
"When the Islamists took control it was like a ghost town, a dead city. Everyone was inside their houses, from fear of reprimand, fear of humiliation, fear of being brutalised, fear of violence" Hamadou Maiga says of life under the Islamists. He's back in Timbuktu, trying to help people rebuild their lives after ten months of occupation. But it won't be an easy journey; the fanatical Islamists left damage that cannot be undone. Ancient manuscripts from the 11th century, historic Mosques and Islamic shrines were all destroyed or desecrated because they did not fit with the invaders orthodoxy. The people have also been left with indelible marks. "They beat us 100 times. Four of them took turns, 25 each" Che says, describing the lashing meted out to him and his girlfriend when it was discovered they'd had a child out of wedlock. It was a reign of terror that meant when the French arrived they were welcomed in as liberators. The worry is that while the French have pushed the jihadis back to their desert hideouts, the fight in Mali hasn't ended. Terrorist attacks have replaced out and out warfare. "The great fear is that the Sahara will become like another Afghanistan, just a breeding ground for extremism and terrorism."

This started out as a way for me to figure out how to use Windows Live Movie Maker and it got out of control. I will admit that the manuscript choice is a bit idiosyncratic. It was driven in part by availability of images.
Music is by the Broadside Band from their album "Danses populaires francaises". If you enjoy the music consider visiting their website at http://www.broadsideband.co.uk/.

Based on true events, the story revolves around a manuscript detailing a 1995 failed assassination plot by the Iranian regime against twenty-one writers and journalists. Almost twenty years later, the existence of this document remains a threat and the head of the censorship board has hired two killers, Morteza and Khosrow, to collect the remaining copies and silence the participants. A masterful storyteller, Rasoulof slowly reveals the relevant details, splitting the narrative between the henchmen and their isolated, state-oppressed victims. Shifting tone from suspense to art-house drama, and moving between past and present with seamless fluidity, we follow Morteza and Khosrow on their mission while silently observing the suffocating existence of three surviving writers. Rasoulof was arrested in 2010 alongside fellow filmmaker Jafar Panahi for "acting against national security." He was given a prison sentence and banned from making films for twenty years.

http://mocomi.com/ presents: Indian Manuscripts - History of India
Our knowledge of our History comes through accounts and narrations, which were passed down through generations in either the oral or written format.
India is said to have the largest collection of manuscripts in the world scattered all across the country. Indian manuscripts were written in a variety of languages and scripts that have survived till today. These are in the Grantha, Devanagiri, Nandinagiri, and Telegu scripts and multiple languages. The heritage and history of India is well documented in these treasures.
There is a big difference in the way we store information in the digital age and how the people of ancient India did it. Palm leaf was the most common form of paper. The center rib of a palm frond was removed leaving two strips. The strips were pressed flat and trimmed to one size before being smoothed down by sandpaper.
Scribes would use a sharp instrument to actually carve the writing into the surface of the leaf. The nearly invisible text was made visible by covering the leaf with a black pigment like carbon black. After the leaf was cleaned, the residue remained in these scratches and made the writing visible.
Watch this video to learn how knowledge has traveled and been preserved through generations in the Indian culture.
