I got the opportunity of climbing up the hills and mountains of Buscalan, Tinglayan in Kalingga to not only personally meet the oldest tattoo artist of the Philippines but to have a traditional tattoo done by her as well last February during my birth month. After I first saw her being featured on a documentary in a local channel I suddenly had this eagerness to visit her place and have a tattoo from her. I have never thought that it would become a reality.
This opportunity was just a detour by the way. Me and my friend availed a 3-Day Sagada Tour package, but travelling to Wang-od's place was not included. I thought Buscalan was very far from Sagada where our group stayed for 2 nights. Until we came to know someone from the place where we had our dinner who knows how to travel to Buscalan from Sagada. We found out that it would only take us, more or less, 3 hrs to reach Buscalan.
We left Sagada so early around 4:00am or so. We woke up late, the original call time was 3:30am. We can hardly see anything outside the van due to the thick fog surrounding the area but I think our guide / driver was so used to the early travel since he was able to drive so fast despite the visibility issue on the road. Considering, for those who have been to Sagada they might niticed it, most of the roads in Sagada don't have a barrier blocking vehicles from driving off the cliffs in the event of any road accidents. Like what happened to Tado years ago.
Then my friend and I decided whether to avail the trip to Buscalan or not since it was still the second day of our tour. Pursuing the trip would mean a lose to what we have paid the travel agency. We asked the tour master if it's OK to not attend the activity foe that day if we decide to go somewhere else, and we were allowed to do so. We did some brainstorming since it would definitely cost us some more.Then finally, we've came into an agreement that we would just skip the second day of the tour and head to Buscalan instead. Anyway, it has been my dream afterall. :)
Also, we considered Wang-od's age. We may not be given another opportunity to meet her if we let this chance pass by. And then the rest is history. :) I didn't have the chance of getting a bigger tattoo since early morning of that day there were people already queueing, waiting for their turns to be tattooed by Wang-od. Some more, those in the queue were already in the village a day before. Meaning, they stayed over night there in Wang-od's village.
I actually lose hope coz the village lady looking out for the queue seemed very damn serious about her role, queue means queue! hehehe Although, it's not only just Wang-od whose tattooing in the village, there were other artists like her grand children and sister too. But the pride you would get is very different when inked by the famous Wang-od, that's for sure, she's already a legend. Lucky me, our guide seemed to have a little background in acting, :) with the advantage of sharing the same dialect with that of Wang-od's, he mananged to convince the queue warden to let me cut the line and I did, I was able to get a tattoo from Apo Wang-od un less than 20mins.
I will surely be back again to try the works of her grandchildren.
For some reason this video doesn't have an audio. There could have been a glitch in the phone mic while my friend did the recording. It could have been a better one if you could also hear the tapping sound created when Apo taps her improvised tattoo machine. Btw, Apo Wang-od taps stronger than her grandchildren, that's why the tapping sound was louder than that of her grandchildren's. Also, a bit bloody due to the force exerted when the needle (actually a thorn from lemon trees) pricks your skin.

Tado (formerly Ezame) is a village in south east Togo, near the border with Benin.
Tradition states that Tado was the birthplace of the Aja people at some point in the 12th or 13th century. Today the Aja populate the south part of Togo and Benin. It is also the reputed birthplace of Gangnihessou, the first king of Dahomey, in the 16th century.
Today Tado is a centre of pilgrimage for Aja people from across the region, who visit the village each August to pray for their ancestral spirits.

I got the opportunity of climbing up the hills and mountains of Buscalan, Tinglayan in Kalingga to not only personally meet the oldest tattoo artist of the Philippines but to have a traditional tattoo done by her as well last February during my birth month. After I first saw her being featured on a documentary in a local channel I suddenly had this eagerness to visit her place and have a tattoo from her. I got the opportunity of climbing up the hills and mountains of Buscalan, Tinglayan in Kalingga to not only personally meet the oldest tattoo artist of the Philippines but to have a traditional tattoo done by her as well last February during my birth month. After I first saw her being featured on a documentary in a local channel I suddenly had this eagerness to visit her place and have a tattoo from her. I have never thought that it would become a reality.
This opportunity was just a detour by the way. Me and my friend availed a 3-Day Sagada Tour package, but travelling to Wang-od's place was not included. I thought Buscalan was very far from Sagada where our group stayed for 2 nights. Until we came to know someone from the place where we had our dinner who knows how to travel to Buscalan from Sagada. We found out that it would only take us, more or less, 3 hrs to reach Buscalan.
We left Sagada so early around 4:00am or so. We woke up late, the original call time was 3:30am. We can hardly see anything outside the van due to the thick fog surrounding the area but I think our guide / driver was so used to the early travel since he was able to drive so fast despite the visibility issue on the road. Considering, for those who have been to Sagada they might niticed it, most of the roads in Sagada don't have a barrier blocking vehicles from driving off the cliffs in the event of any road accidents. Like what happened to Tado years ago.
Then my friend and I decided whether to avail the trip to Buscalan or not since it was still the second day of our tour. Pursuing the trip would mean a lose to what we have paid the travel agency. We asked the tour master if it's OK to not attend the activity foe that day if we decide to go somewhere else, and we were allowed to do so. We did some brainstorming since it would definitely cost us some more.Then finally, we've came into an agreement that we would just skip the second day of the tour and head to Buscalan instead. Anyway, it has been my dream afterall. :)
Also, we considered Wang-od's age. We may not be given another opportunity to meet her if we let this chance pass by. And then the rest is history. :) I didn't have the chance of getting a bigger tattoo since early morning of that day there were people already queueing, waiting for their turns to be tattooed by Wang-od. Some more, those in the queue were already in the village a day before. Meaning, they stayed over night there in Wang-od's village.
I actually lose hope coz the village lady looking out for the queue seemed very damn serious about her role, queue means queue! hehehe Although, it's not only just Wang-od whose tattooing in the village, there were other artists like her grand children and sister too. But the pride you would get is very different when inked by the famous Wang-od, that's for sure, she's already a legend. Lucky me, our guide seemed to have a little background in acting, :) with the advantage of sharing the same dialect with that of Wang-od's, he mananged to convince the queue warden to let me cut the line and I did, I was able to get a tattoo from Apo Wang-od un less than 20mins.
I will surely be back again to try the works of her grandchildren.
For some reason this video doesn't have an audio. There could have been a glitch in the phone mic while my friend did the recording. It could have been a better one if you could also hear the tapping sound created when Apo taps her improvised tattoo machine. Btw, Apo Wang-od taps stronger than her grandchildren, that's why the tapping sound was louder than that of her grandchildren's. Also, a bit bloody due to the force exerted when the needle (actually a thorn from lemon trees) pricks your skin.
