Jezzine is a town in Lebanon, located 22 km from Sidon and 40 km south of Beirut.Surrounded by mountain peaks, pine forests, and at an average altitude of 950 m, it is the main summer resort and tourist destination of South Lebanon. Jezzine is an S-L-A-controlled Christian town 20 kilometres (13 miles) north of Marjayoun, the main town in the occupied zone.
The withdrawal would be the first major alteration in the front-line map of southern Lebanon in nearly 14 years.
Jezzine - a picturesque town outside Israel's formal occupation zone in South Lebanon has been controlled by the militia since 1985.
This small town is seen by many as a barometer of the chances for peace in south Lebanon, the last active Arab-Israeli frontline.
On Saturday Lebanese army soldiers watched from a hillside as South Lebanon Army (S-L-A) soldiers began preparing for a withdrawal.
The S-L-A move follows the election of a new Israeli prime minister, Ehud Barak, on a promise to leave Lebanon within a year.
A withdrawal could test how the Lebanese government -- and especially the pro-Iranian Hezbollah guerrillas battling the occupation -- would react to a full-scale Israeli withdrawal.
The head of the South Lebanon Army (S-L-A), Antoine Lahd has said there is to be a news conference on May 31st on the militia's withdrawal.
Lahd acknowledged, in a statement issued on Saturday, that Hezbollah's recent successful strikes against his militia were behind the decision to withdraw from Jezzine.
Hezbollah is leading a guerrilla war to try to oust 1,500 Israeli soldiers and the 2,500 S-L-A militiamen from the occupied zone.
Beirut in the past has rejected Israeli proposals for a phased withdrawal, insisting on a complete, unconditional retreat from the occupied zone.
Lebanon does not want to fall into the trap of negotiating with Israel in violation of a pledge it made to neighbouring Syria.
The two countries had agreed to negotiate simultaneously with Israel for a permanent and comprehensive peace settlement.
Syria wants the return of the Golan Heights, which Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East War, as the price for peace.
A sudden unilateral S-L-A withdrawal from Jezzine without an arrangement to deploy the Lebanese army in force would leave the area sandwiched between the mainly Shiite Muslim guerrillas and the Israelis.
There are fears among the Christian population that the guerrillas would seek revenge on suspected collaborators with Israel or use the area as a launching pad for attacks against the occupied zone, thus inviting retaliation.

Demography
The inhabitants of Jezzine are mainly Maronites or Melkites. The town is located on the slopes of Tumat Niha and is surrounded with pine forests, vineyards and orchards. From the top of the huge rocky promontory known as al Shir, the visitor enjoys a panoramic view of the surrounding localities scattered in the midst of a fertile plain and protected by mountains.
