Hikurangi is a settlement in Northland, New Zealand. The city of Whangarei is 17 km (11 miles) to the south, and Kawakawa is 39 km (24 miles) northwest. The Glenbervie Forest is southeast of the settlement. State Highway 1 once passed through the town, but now bypasses it to the west. Mount Hikurangi is a volcanic dome rising 365 metres (1,198 ft) to the west of the town. It is 1.2 million years old, and part of the Harbour Fault which also includes Parakiore, near Kamo, and Parihaka in Whangarei.
The population was 1,413 in the 2013 Census, a decrease of 9 from 2001. Hikurangi is a service town for the local dairy industry.
An area of 12,000 acres (48.6 km2) of land at Hikurangi was purchased from local Maori by the District Commissioner of Lands in 1862. The land was considered desirable because it contained mature timber and high quality flax, and transport routes were established. The area became a timber milling centre with the establishment of a road to Whangarei in 1875, and the first of several sawmills soon after.Kauri gum-diggers were also active in the area.
New Zealand (/njuːˈziːlənd/ new-ZEE-lənd, Māori: Aotearoa [aɔˈtɛaɾɔa]) is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The country geographically comprises two main landmasses – that of the North Island, or Te Ika-a-Māui, and the South Island, or Te Waipounamu – and numerous smaller islands. New Zealand is situated some 1,500 kilometres (900 mi) east of Australia across the Tasman Sea and roughly 1,000 kilometres (600 mi) south of the Pacific island areas of New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga. Because of its remoteness, it was one of the last lands to be settled by humans. During its long isolation, New Zealand developed a distinctive biodiversity of animal, fungal and plant life. The country's varied topography and its sharp mountain peaks, such as the Southern Alps, owe much to the tectonic uplift of land and volcanic eruptions. New Zealand's capital city is Wellington, while its most populous city is Auckland.
Somewhere between 1250 and 1300 CE, Polynesians settled in the islands that were to become New Zealand, and developed a distinctive Māori culture. In 1642, Abel Tasman, a Dutch explorer, became the first European to sight New Zealand. In 1840, representatives of the British Crown and Māori Chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, making New Zealand a British colony. Today, the majority of New Zealand's population of 4.5 million is of European descent; the indigenous Māori are the largest minority, followed by Asians and Pacific Islanders. Reflecting this, New Zealand's culture is mainly derived from Māori and early British settlers, with recent broadening arising from increased immigration. The official languages are English, Māori and New Zealand Sign Language, with English predominant.
The North Island or Te Ika-a-Māui is one of the two main islands of New Zealand, separated from the slightly larger but much less populous South Island by Cook Strait. The island's area is 113,729 square kilometres (43,911 sq mi), making it the world's 14th-largest island. It has a population of 3,519,800 (June 2015 estimate).
Twelve main urban areas (half of them officially cities) are in the North Island. Listing from north to south, they are Whangarei, Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Rotorua, Gisborne, New Plymouth, Napier, Hastings, Whanganui, Palmerston North, and Wellington, the capital, located at the south-west extremity of the island. About 77% of New Zealand's population lives in the North Island.
Although the island has been known as the North Island for many years, in 2009 the New Zealand Geographic Board found that, along with the South Island, the North Island had no official name. After a public consultation, the board officially named the island North Island or Te Ika-a-Maui in October 2013.
Mount Hikurangi may refer to:
Ngāti Porou is a Māori iwi traditionally located in the East Cape and Gisborne regions of the North Island of New Zealand. Ngāti Porou has the second-largest affiliation of any iwi in New Zealand, with 71,910 registered members in 2006. The traditional tribal boundary of Ngāti Porou extends from Pōtikirua in the north to Te Toka-a-Taiau (a rock that used to sit in the mouth of Gisborne harbour) in the south.
Mt Hikurangi features prominently in Ngāti Porou traditions as a symbol of endurance and strength, and holds tapu status. In these traditions, Hikurangi is often personified. Ngāti Porou traditions indicate that Hikurangi was the first point to surface when Māui fished up the North Island from beneath the ocean. His canoe, the Nuku-tai-memeha, is said to have been wrecked there. The Waiapu River also features in Ngāti Porou traditions.
Ngāti Porou takes its name from the ancestor Porourangi (also known as Porou Ariki). He was a direct descendant of Toi-kai-rākau, who is also regarded as a prominent ancestor of Ngāti Porou. Other ancestors include Māui, accredited in oral tradition with raising the North Island from the sea, and Paikea, the whale rider. Although Ngāti Porou claim the Nukutaimemeha as their foundation canoe, many Ngāti Porou ancestors arrived on different canoes, including Horouta, Tākitimu and Tereanini. The descendants of Porourangi and Toi formed groups that spread across the East Cape through conquest and through strategic marriage alliances.

GNS scientist Kate Clark has outlined what would happened if a large "megathrust" earthquake struck on the Hikurangi subduction fault east of New Zealand. The fault runs the length of the east coast of the North Island, across Cook Strait and down to Kaikoura, and is the area where the Pacific tectonic plate pushes underneath the Australian plate. Speaking this morning to TVNZ 1's Breakfast programme, Dr Clark said a magnitude nine earthquake on the fault, which is the worst-case scenario, would be felt across the country with a very long period of shaking. Following the quake, a tsunami would likely be triggered, giving people on the coast just seven minutes, in some places, to escape from a wall of water. "It would probably generate very widespread ground shaking and a very long durati...
Te Ara Ki Hikurangi (in Maori) is the highest non-volcanic mountain in the north island New Zealand that stands 1,752 metre asl. The summit is regarded as the first land in the world to catch the rays of the new day's sunrise. My tramping buddies and I had a great time climbing the mountain summit on 9 to 10 May 2015... Hope you enjoy this video.......

A climb of Mount Hikurangi (1,752m) which is the highest, non-volcanic summit on the North Island of New Zealand. It is also the first spot to see the first rays of the sun each day. The East Cape is a remote and beautiful part of the North Island. Located on private land inland from Ruatoria, we were kindly given access for this 2 day climb by Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou.
On and around Mount Hikurangi. Mount Hikurangi in Māori mythology, was the first part of the North Island to emerge when Māui pulled it as a giant fish from the ocean. It is one of many very interesting myths. The views around this mountain are awesome as is the hunting and rock fishing around the East Coast. Experience New Zealand at its best. #GigatownGIS
From a 2001 VHS program called "World Regions," made by National Geographic and Glencoe McGraw-Hill. The program contained four VHS tapes and spanned from Units 1 - 11 in the textbook. I found the box set in the World Geography supply closet at the school I teach at. Here is a PDF of the Teacher Guide that came with the VHS set: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0w44f-J0YDdVkdOdFZZT21QazQ/view?usp=sharing
Ruatoria based entrepreneur group Hikurangi enterprises has exceeded its expectations after planting and harvesting a trial hemp crop. They have a product at market and are looking at more health products but they say they have had lots of interests from other Māori land owners. They only hope the regulations to make medicines for human consumption can be eased. So they can also be a part of solution. Irena Smith has the story.

1159hrs on Tuesday 28th May 2013, a day when hail and some sleet fell across Auckland numerous times during the first big polar outbreak of the year, bringing cold weather to all of New Zealand, including snow over much of the South Island, and in the North Island right up to Mt Hikurangi in the northeast.
