An orchestra (/ˈɔːrkᵻstrə/ or US /ˈɔːrˌkɛstrə/; Italian: [orˈkɛstra]) is a large instrumental ensemble used in classical music that contains sections of string (violin, viola, cello and double bass), brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. Other instruments such as the piano and celesta may sometimes be grouped into a fifth section such as a keyboard section or may stand alone, as may the concert harp and, for 20th and 21st century compositions, electric and electronic instruments. The term orchestra derives from the Greek ὀρχήστρα, the name for the area in front of an ancient Greek stage reserved for the Greek chorus. The orchestra grew by accretion throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, but changed very little in composition during the course of the 20th century.
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO), based in London, was formed by Sir Thomas Beecham in 1946. In its early days the orchestra secured profitable recording contracts and important engagements including the Glyndebourne Festival Opera and the concerts of the Royal Philharmonic Society. After Beecham's death in 1961 the orchestra's fortunes declined steeply; it battled for survival until the mid-1960s, when its future was secured after an Arts Council report recommended that it should receive public subsidy; a further crisis arose in the same era when it seemed that the orchestra's right to call itself "Royal" could be withdrawn.
Since Beecham's death the RPO has had seven chief conductors, including Rudolf Kempe, Antal Doráti, André Previn and Vladimir Ashkenazy; as of 2013 the incumbent is Charles Dutoit. Others closely associated with the orchestra have included Sir Charles Groves, Sir Charles Mackerras, Peter Maxwell Davies, Yehudi Menuhin and Leopold Stokowski.
The Royal is a British medical drama series produced by ITV that ran from 2003 to 2011. The show comprised one-hour episodes which were normally first aired on ITV in the Sunday early evening slot.
The title of the series refers to the fictional "St Aidan's Royal Free Hospital", located in Elsinby, a fictional rural seaside town, portrayed as being close to Aidensfield, the fictional setting of the UK TV series Heartbeat. The series was shot in Whitby and Scarborough, in the North Riding of Yorkshire. The Royal is an NHS hospital serving the local town, countryside and visitors. The show was set in the 1960s. It began as a spin-off from another popular ITV show set in North Yorkshire, Heartbeat.
Stars of the show included Ian Carmichael, Wendy Craig, Robert Daws, and Amy Robbins. The last episode of the show aired at 7.00 pm on Sunday, 31 July 2011 on ITV.
The Royal was introduced in the 14th episode of the 12th series of Heartbeat entitled 'Out Of The Blue' and The Royal benefited from this connection to the extremely popular parent series; several Heartbeat characters appeared in the first couple of series of The Royal, most notably Bill Maynard as a bed-ridden Claude Greengrass, but as the series progressed it generally dropped its character crossovers with Heartbeat to become its own entity.

Heart Live At The Royal Albert Hall - released 25th November 2016. In a career spanning over 40 years it seems inconceivable that they have never performed at London’s most famous venue The Royal Albert Hall. That changed in June 2016 as the band appeared with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra adding some a classical vibe to hits like These Dreams, Alone and What about Love, they also reinvented old favourites like Dreamboat Annie and Magic Man while rocking the house to the rafters with Crazy on You and Barracuda. This very special show was most certainly not just nostalgia as the band and their extra 68 backing musicians also played tracks from their 16th album Beautiful Broken. To my knowledge (and please correct me if I'm wrong), this is the only of the world-famous performances involving both a rock band and a symphony orchestra in which there's a real interaction and "dialogue" between such two different entities. All of the others are essentially about the rock band playing their usual thing while the orchestra serves as a symphonic-sounding background. That's why, to me, nothing tops Jon Lord's "Concerto For Group And Orchestra" in the rock band + symphony orchestra concept. This piece was first performed and recorded on 24 September 1969 at the Royal Albert Hall, London, and first released in December 1969 in the United States (one month later in the UK). Malcolm Arnold (later knighted by the British Empire) conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with ...
