Harar:
Harar, formerly written Harrar and known to its inhabitants as Gey, is a walled city in eastern Ethiopia. It was formerly the capital of Harergey and now the capital of the modern Harari ethno-political division (or kilil) of Ethiopia. The city is located on a hilltop in the eastern extension of the Ethiopian Highlands, about five hundred kilometers from Addis Ababa at an elevation of 1,885 meters. Based on figures from the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, Harar has an estimated total population of 122,000, of whom 60,000 were males and 62,000 were females. According to the census of 1994, on which this estimate is based, the city has a population of 76,378.For centuries, Harar has been a major commercial centre, linked by the trade routes with the rest of Ethiopia, the entire Horn of Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and, through its ports, the outside world. Harar Jugol, the old walled city, was included in the World Heritage List in 2006 by UNESCO in recognition of its cultural heritage. It is sometimes known in Arabic as "the City of Saints" ("Madinat al-Awilya"). According to UNESCO, it is "considered 'the fourth holy city' of Islam" with 82 mosques, three of which date from the 10th century and 102 shrines. The Fath Madinat Harar records that the cleric Abadir Umar Ar-Rida and several other religious leaders settled in Harar circa 612H (1216 AD). Harar was later made the new capital of the Adal Sultanate in 1520 by the Sultan Abu Bakr ibn Muhammad. The city saw a political decline during the ensuing Emirate of Harar, only regaining some significance in the Khedivate of Egypt period. During Abyssinian rule, the city decayed while maintaining a certain cultural prestige. Today, it is the seat of the Harari ethno-political division.
People: The inhabitants of Harar represent several different Afro-Asiatic-speaking ethnic groups, both Muslim and Christian, including the Oromo, Somali, Amhara, Gurage and Tigray. The Harari, who refer to themselves as Gey 'Usu ("People of the City") are a Semitic-speaking people. Their language, Harari, constitutes a Semitic pocket in a predominantly Cushitic-speaking region. Originally written in the Arabic script, the Harari language has recently converted to the Ge'ez script.
Besides the stone wall surrounding the city, the old town is home to 110 mosques and many more shrines, centered on Feres Magala square. Notable buildings include Medhane Alem Cathedral, the house of Ras Mekonnen, the house of Arthur Rimbaud, and the sixteenth century Jami Mosque. Harrar Bira Stadium is the home stadium for the Harrar Beer Bottling FC. One can also visit the market.
Feeding hyenasA long-standing tradition of feeding meat to spotted hyenas also evolved during the 1960s into an impressive night show for tourists.[19] (See spotted hyenas in Harar.)
Other places of interest include the highest amba overlooking the city, the Kondudo or "W" mountain, which hosts an ancient population of feral horses. A 2008 scientific mission has unleashed efforts for their conservation, as the animals are greatly endangered.
The Harar Brewery was established in 1984. Its beers can be sampled at the brewery social club adjacent to the brewery in Harar.Intercity bus service is provided by the Selam Bus Line Share Company.

Travel video about destination Harar in Ethiopia.
In the east of Ethiopia is the historic city of Harar which, after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem, is regarded by Muslims to be the fourth holiest city in the world. The whole of the old town is surrounded by a wall, with five of the original gates that are kept shut from dusk to dawn. In the highlands of Black Africa, Harar was one of the most important trading centres of the Islamic faith, a Muslim stronghold in Christian Ethiopia. The magic of the Orient still exists in this place and its many whitewashed buildings gave it the alternative name of The White City. Today there is no hint of the former religious conflict of bygone days and instead the peaceful coexistence of religions is exemplary. Indeed, UNESCO recognized it for peace, tolerance and solidarity. Framed by white buildings and a white mosque, the muslim market is one of two small markets within the walls of the old town in which colourfully dressed women sell fruit, baskets and other goods, both day and night. Harar is a remarkable city with all of the atmosphere of the One Hundred And One Nights!

Here women control on the street the sale of khat, a plant with stimulant powers that sets the pace of Harar. Consumption, ritualized in everyday life of the city, provides its inhabitants a unique identity.

Travel video about Alaskas Inside Passage in Alaska.
Alaska's Inside Passage is the title of a fascinating ocean cruise and features the wonders of nature and amazing natural landscapes. It is a journey to the solitude of Alaska and its splendid wildlife. We begin in Vancouver, Canada’s pearl of the Pacific Ocean, along the Alexander Archipelago in the Gulf Of Alaska. Vancouver is a young city full of joie de vivre with captivating charm and European flair, set in a beautiful location and with a mild climate. Next to the snow-white tented roof of the densely built quay near to Canada Place, is the centre of a new harbour where cruise ships from all over the world come and go. Ketchikan is a small town is located five hundred and twenty six nautical miles north of Vancouver and was founded by the Tlingit Indians. In the 1880’s the town based its economy on salmon and wood but today it relies upon tourism. Creek Street is a wooden construction on stilts located along Ketchikan Creek, previously the city’s red light district but now full of elegant shops and restaurants. Since 1900, Juneau has been the capital city of Alaska, the forty ninth state of the U.S.A. Tlingit Indian leader, Chief Kowee, discovered gold in Gold Creek and the gold rush began! The spacious and speedy gondolas of the Mount Roberts Tramway travel up the mountain of the same name with fine views of the harbour with its cruise ships, the Gastineau Channel, the Chilkat Mountains and the Inside Passage. The ice flows of the thirty two glaciers of the Kenai National Park Fjords are now melting faster than they can grow and the fjords are becoming larger. Yet still the landscape is a huge wonder of nature, a remote world of ice and snow. Alaska is the epitome of vastness, wilderness and natural scenery, a unique habitat far from civilization.

Travel video about destination Abyssinia in Ethiopia.
Abyssinia is a mysterious country located in the mountains of Africa which today is known as Ethiopia, the cradle of early Christianity and a unique land of biblical stories and myths. Historic Aksum, in northern Ethiopia, was once the capital of a powerful kingdom. On the site of two previous religious buildings, its ancient cathedral was rebuilt in 1665. Thrones constructed of stone have witnessed the coronation of various monarchs whose Ethiopian Orthodox faith, from the fifth century, spread far and wide. From the Eastern Roman Empire, fleeing missionaries known as Monophysites introduced the ancient Christian faith which taught that Christ had only one divine nature. Eventually the concept of a division of faith came into being and Ethiopian Christianity developed independently and Aksum became a sacred city. Aksum is also referred to as ‘Ethiopian Rome’ and is the capital of the oldest Christian kingdom in the world, the largest outside the Roman Empire. In the north, the large water basins of May Shum are known as The Baths Of The Queen Of Saba. They date back to Aksumitic times and have been frequently renovated. A huge cistern supplies much of the population with water and on a hill above the town are the underground grave chambers of King Kaleb and Gebre Masqal. Although little remains of the former capital of the Aksumitic kingdom, Ethiopia's holiest site, it continues to be a place of mystique and legend. Dawit The Third, a son of Emperor Iyasu, had his palace built in the north of Fasil Ghebbi, protected by a nine hundred metre long wall. The large ballroom was known as Singer Hall because within it contests were held that featured wandering minstrels, and Dawit played the harp. Today, the lion cages are empty but Hailie Selassie, the last emperor of Ethiopia, possessed one as a symbol of his origin as having been from the Tribe of Judah. Without a doubt, Gondar will forever evoke a special kind of nostalgia and a rich sense of history.

Vacation travel video about destination Malawi in Africa.
Malawi is the unknown Africa in the south-east of the Continent. A wild country between sea and highlands, a land of contrasts with amazing green mountains and high plateaus but most of all, Lake Malawi. In the north west and on the border with Zambia is the thousand square kilometre Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, home to more than two hundred elephants who, in small groups, visit the Kazuni Safari Camp on their way to the lake. In the Lake Kazuni area there are many hippos and crocodiles which although rarely seen from the shore can certainly be heard at night. The location of the small town of Nkhata Bay is quite spectacular, a large, sheltered bay, accessible via a steep slope. Small boats transport the local people to various locations so that they can buy and sell, as there are hardly any roads around the lake. A restless, colourful and vibrant harbour town and the northernmost point which famous explorer Dr. David Livingstone reached on his historic voyage of discovery. Cichlids, the living jewels of Lake Malawi, are highly sought after among aquatic fish enthusiasts, the brightly coloured males achieving the highest prices. Provided with a good supply of oxygen and a light sedative in the water, once a month the fish are taken to the airport. The craggy rock scenery of Lake Malawi was not always below water. Only when the southern section of the East African Rift Valley filled with water did it become home to cichlids. On the extreme south east coast on the border with Mozambique is Mount Mulanje, a huge mountain range that formed during volcanic activity more than a hundred and thirty million years ago. At the foot of the mountain scenery grows one of the world’s finest varieties of tea. The Maravi Kingdom eventually became an independent country, Malawi, the warm and beating heart of Africa!

Vacation travel video about destination Funchal in Madeira.
Funchal is the capital of the Atlantic island of Madeira and is situated in a natural, picturesque bay, surrounded by steep mountain slopes. With churches, palaces, mansions, museums and magnificent gardens, it is a city of both character and history. The Palacio De São Lourenço is the town’s oldest fort and was one of the defences that surrounded Funchal from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century. Pirates repeatedly attacked the growing town thus its inhabitants were forced to protect it as best they could. Madeira is famous for its wine which has been exported around the world for hundreds of years and in the old rooms of a former monastery, it is pressed, stored and celebrated. The upper town is considered to be the most vibrant part of the city. The adjoining monastery church is in fine Mudejar style. Its walls are colorfully tiled from top to bottom, which emphasizes the oriental nature of the building. The Jardim Botanico is located on a hillside above Funchal and once belonged to the Reid Family. With more than two thousand exotic plants from all over the world it is a garden of earthly pleasures. Not surprisingly, stunning beauty, pulsating life and the serenity of its charming people have continued to make Funchal a major tourist destination.

Travel video about destination Gondar in Ethiopia.
Gondar is a city of palaces and castles: Ethiopia in the seventeenth century. For the first time in the country’s history, Kaiser Fasilidas began with the construction of a walled palace. Until then, the emperors of that time took part in various campaigns during the dry season. Only during the rainy season was the court located in a camp thus, in the course of a century, a huge fortification was built with several royal palaces and a number of churches. Emperor Yohannes, son of Fasilidas, took over the throne after his father’s death in 1667, when he had the palace extended considerably. But apart from the library tower and an adjoining wall, little of it is visible today. The remaining architecture is reminiscent of European castles. The next emperor, Fasilidas’ grandson, Iyasu The first, had a further two-storey palace built close to the original one. Set in a magnificent location overlooking the city, the palace ruins stimulate the imagination as to how splendid this all once was. Finally, the Empire disintegrated into warring principalities, a fact that spelled the inevitable decline of the imperial city of Gondor.

Travel video about destination Amalfitana in Italy.
The Costa D'Amalfi in the south of Italy is both wild and beautiful, framed by the Tyrrhenian Sea and the foothills of the Lattari Mountains as well as historic and picturesque towns.Sorrento marks the beginning of a journey through the "land where the lemon trees blossom" and along one of the most beautiful panoramic roads in the world, the Amalfitana. Sorrento's secrets lie hidden in numerous cloisters, gardens and courtyards and within the footsteps of European history. They all came here, Greeks, Romans, Normans, French and Spanish, to a place that since ancient times has been used for recreation. Until the end of the nineteenth century the Amalfi Coast was mainly accessible from the sea but later a road was built, the Amalfitana. It is around twenty five miles long, with many sharp curves, and often seems to hover above the sea. Amalfi is the beating heart of the coast and .today a world famous resort that is squeezed into the mouth of a valley of mills. In the Middle Ages, along with Pisa, Genoa and Venice, Amalfi was one of Italy’s most powerful maritime republics and its prosperity showed. High above the coast is Ravello that in the ninth century belonged to the League of Cities of the Amalfi Republic and served as a defence against the Normans. It boasted twelve churches plus various convents and palaces in mediaeval Moorish architecture that highlighted a glorious era of luxury and wealth. One of the most beautiful roads in the world, the Amalfitana travels along a remarkable coastline and through character–rich locations that are full of the varied architecture that only the pages of history can endow.

Travel video about destination Lalibela in Ethiopia.
In the mountainous highlands of Ethiopia lies an extraordinary treasure of the history of mankind, the eleven rock churches of Lalibela. In the thirteenth century the famous Amhara sovereign, King Lalibela, decided to establish a new Jerusalem in his kingdom. Unique in their construction, the rock churches are among the most little-known miracles of the world, well disguised in the red tuff rock. The world redeemer church of the House Of The Holy Saviour is situated at the highest point of the steep Lasta Mountains. The interior of the Rock Church looks like a fully furnished basilica with a narthex, nave, two aisles and a dome above the sanctuary. Paintings of biblical motifs and stone ornaments adorn both columns and walls. The external pathways are narrow and difficult to negotiate and in each small niche live priests and monks who tend to the churches. The various caves and chapels each have a name such as Adam’s Tomb and other biblical names. According to legend, to replace the exhausted stonemasons, God Himself sent hard working angels to continue the work throughout the night, thus helping to create the new Jerusalem in Lalibela!

When most people think of the country Somalia, they associate it with the only areas national media cover, pirates, extremist terrorism, famine and war. A self declared independent state of this country named Somaliland seemed to be different from the rest, the people were happy, it was safe to travel too and they seek peace following the 1988 Somali war.
Somaliland is a self declared independent state, that has been fighting for recognition since the 1960’s. Since then, Somaliland has managed to instate its own visa’s, currency, police force and even access to reliable internet.
I wanted to discover more about the somali people are what they are really like, and how they live their lives. So i researched ways to get into the country. Crossing the border is relatively easy in fact, you just need a visa. I found a tour operator named Lupine Travel who offer trips out to the Horn of Africa Via Ethiopia, this was my chance to meet some of the locals of Somaliland. So, after speaking to the company and arranging my trip, I booked my flights, armed myself with my camera and set out to discover the story of the people of Somaliland.

They are free from the shackles of tribal discrimination and religious bigotry.
The Islamic City of Harar tries to portray the beauties of this peaceful city with its rich history, its people and its lush geography.

Techno-Religions and Silicon Prophets: Will the 21st century be shaped by hi-tech gurus or by religious zealots – or are they the same thing?
What is the current status of religions and ideologies in the world, and what will be the likely impact of 21st-century technological breakthroughs on religion and ideology? Will traditional religions and ideologies—from Christianity and Islam to Liberalism and Socialism—manage to survive the technological and economic revolutions of the 21st century? What would be the place of Islam, for example, in a world of genetic engineering and artificial intelligence? The talk addresses these questions, and argues that the future belongs to techno-religions, which promise salvation through technology, and which are already gathering believers in places such as Silicon Valley.
About the Author
Prof. Yuval Noah Harari lectures at the Department of History, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He specializes in World History, medieval history and military history. His current research focuses on macro-historical questions: What is the relation between history and biology? Is there justice in history? Did people become happier as history unfolded?
His most recent book is Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind. The book surveys the entire length of human history, from the evolution of Homo sapiens in the Stone Age up to the political and technological revolutions of the Silicon Age. It has become an international bestseller, and has been translated into close to 30 languages worldwide.

» Arthur Rimbaud (in “Une Saison en enfer”).
Musique : Patrick Morgenthaler
Thèmes : Information| Poésie| Voyage| Arthur Rimbaud| Jean-Michel Djian| Charlotte Roux
