Pluit is an administrative district (kelurahan) located in Penjaringan, North Jakarta. The residential area is mainly inhabited by Chinese origin. They run many Chinese restaurants in nearby Muara Karang.
In the last ten years, Pluit has established itself as a bustling commercial center with its three shopping centers : Pluit Junction, Pluit Village and Emporium Pluit Mall.
Several schools in Pluit are BTB International School, Tarakanita, IPEKA, BPK Penabur, Permai, Diakonia and STM 12.
Contrary to popular belief, the name Pluit has no ethymological connection with fluit (whistle in Dutch).
Instead, the name was derived from the word fluitschip, which means a kind of long slender Dutch merchant ship. In the 17th century, on the eastern coast of the estuary Kali Angke, a fluitschip called Het Whitte Paertwas was stranded and became unseaworthy.
This boat was subsequently used as a stronghold as a fortification to the already existing Castle Vijfhoek to ward off the sporadic attacks of Banten forces.
