Eng/Indonesian Australian peacekeeping forces occupied an area of the East Timorese capital on Friday in their biggest show of strength on the ground so far. An estimated 15-hundred troops backed up by attack helicopters moved in to secure the area. The Australian peacekeepers carried out house to house searches to flush out any militiamen still operating in the area. Troops and armoured personnel carriers sealed off a central district near Dili's port and conducted a house-to-house search for militiamen. Blackhawk helicopters hovered overhead throughout the operation, which was still under way after two hours. An estimated 15-hundred troops took part in the operation. Witnesses saw Australian troops detaining three unidentified men who were ordered to lie face do...
Eng/Indonesian A battalion of Australian troops have entered Liquica in East Timor to try to secure the area just hours after A-P-T-N showed footage of around 150 anti-independence militia operating there. Within the next few days, Australian commanders say they will have around 100 troops installed around Liquica, who will operate 24 hour patrols using a significant armoured presence. INTERFET said the aim of securing the town, located 45 kilometres (30 miles) west of East Timor's capital of Dili where the peacekeeping force is based, was to give the thousands of refugees still hiding in the nearby hills confidence to return home. The presence of peacekeepers in the remote area will also hopefully mean that aid can begin to effectively reach the refugees. The operation ...

Indonesian/Nat Officials of INTERFET, the international peace keeping force in East Timor, have met leaders of the Falantil resistance group. They discussed the future role of the group and the possibility of cooperation between INTERFET and the group. The meeting took place outside the village of Dare a tiny settlement centred around a small church perched on a ridge overlooking the capital. SOUNDBITE: (Bahasa Indonesian) "If there is a security guard from the peacekeepers of course we will come back to Dili. Even though our houses have been flattened it remains as part of our struggle." SUPER CAPTION: Leandro Isaac, Falantil Leader SOUNDBITE: (Bahasa Indonesian) "We do trust the UN peacekeeping troops - we asked the United Nations to send troops so long ago - the In...

Indonesian/Nat The commander of the pro-independence militia in East Timor has said that international peacekeepers are reacting too slowly to information on mass graves. The criticism comes despite recent discoveries of mass graves in Liquica. The pro-independence militia in East Timor are working hard to prepare for independence. At their new headquarters in Remexio, Falantil troops are cutting grass, burning waste and clearing debris from buildings. But their leader is diplomatically critical of the record of the INTERFET troops so far. SOUNDBITE: (Tetun) "I understand the procedural limitations for a regular force like INTERFET. If I were to get 5000 Falantil soldiers we would be able to cover the territory ourselves." SUPER CAPTION: Commander Sabica, Falantil Force...
Indonesian/Nat In West Timor a man claims to have been shot by Interfet, the multinational force, for no apparent reason. Garsindo Marques claims he was merely searching for food when he was shot by Interfet, and says he is not part of the militia. He is now receiving medical attention in Atambua, a town in West Timor close to the border with East Timor. The multi-national peacekeeping force is denying his claims. In the same town APTN has filmed the militia training new recruits. West Timor is still controlled by Indonesia and signs of militia activity there have led Interfet to intensify patrols of the border. Even so, Interfet wants to talk formally with the militia in order to involve them in the process of bringing peace to East Timor. Pro-independence leader ...
