The sound is legendary and the 808 uses complete analog synthesis in comparison to the TR-909.

Technical details: the TR-808 is controlling both the Juno-60 and the SH-101 arpeggios, via the AC (accent) and CB (cowbell) sync out jacks. The TR-808 also controls the TR-909 via DynSync. The Juno-60 chords are played in real time manually

So a while ago, we linked to a video that you all seemed to like very much.
It was from the extended TV version of 1983 documentary Breakin' n Enterin', and featured Egyptian Lover, one of the masters of the Roland-TR808 drum machine, giving a brief tutorial on how to use the box (filmed, we believe, around 1981). Now, given how popular FunkinEven's recent MPC tutorial for FACT TV also was, when we heard that the Egyptian Lover was in London this Summer, we asked if he was down to recreate the scene for 2012. Being a total gent, he was up for it, and built a beat live for us in his hotel room after performing at Blunted. Of course the speakers that we brought didn't work, so the Lover ended up plugging his 808 straight into the hotel alarm clock, which made it all even cooler.

KEEP IN MIND: There's no single, definitive 808 or 909 for the TR-8 to replicate. Each 808/909 is tuned somewhat differently and also has a different tone, due to parts and aging. So any differences exist between real 808s and 909s as well.
In this video I compare the Aira Tr-8 and the Tr-808. This is an unibased comparison. I am not being paid by any companies. Keep in mind that most differences are related to tuning . It is difficult to get the tuning 100 percent. The tuning knobs are VERY sensitive on the TR-8 Each 808 is different and mine is no exception. In fact Mine has a longer decay on the kick than most and my snare and cowbell are tuned high. Also, i did not go through every drum sound because it would require lots of time adjusting volume levels on the fly. one cannot simply mute/unmute the 808. Enjoy!
******Update 10/14
After playing the tr 808 and tr-8 side by side for 6 months I can honestly say the TR-808 sounds BETTER by a good amount. The 808 has a more random feel due to the analog circuits than the Tr-8s emulation. The Tr-8 sounds a bit samey samey
Also the tr-808 has a harder hitting edgier sound. The Tr-8 sounds more tame and sample-y. The Tr-8 just needs a less polished sound and better random circuit randomization to the algorithm.

The Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer was one of the first programmable drum machines ("TR" serving as an initialism for Transistor Rhythm). Introduced by the Roland Corporation in early 1980, it was originally manufactured for use as a tool for studio musicians to create demos. Like earlier Roland drum machines, it does not sound very much like a real drum kit. Indeed, because the TR-808 came out a few months after the Linn LM-1 (the first drum machine to use digital samples), professionals generally considered its sound inferior to sampling drum machines; a 1982 Keyboard Magazine review of the LinnDrum indirectly referred to the TR-808 as sounding like marching anteaters. However, the TR-808 cost US$1,195 upon its release, which was considerably more affordable than the US$5,000 LM-1.
Drum machines in general became an integral part of hip hop music as a cheap and simple way of producing a drum sound. The Roland TR-808 held specific appeal because of the ability of its bass drum sound to produce extremely low-frequency sounds. It also featured various unique artificial percussion sounds that characterized the TR-808: a deep bass kick drum, "tinny handclap sounds," “the ticky snare, the tishy hi-hats (open and closed) and the spacey cowbell.” The Roland TR-808 would eventually be used on more hit records than any other drum machine, and has thus attained an iconic status within the music industry. The machine's successor was the Roland TR-909.

So a while ago, we linked to a video that you all seemed to like very much.
It was from the extended TV version of 1983 documentary Breakin' n Enterin', and featured Egyptian Lover, one of the masters of the Roland-TR808 drum machine, giving a brief tutorial on how to use the box (filmed, we believe, around 1981). Now, given how popular FunkinEven's recent MPC tutorial for FACT TV also was, when we heard that the Egyptian Lover was in London this Summer, we asked if he was down to recreate the scene for 2012. Being a total gent, he was up for it, and built a beat live for us in his hotel room after performing at Blunted. Of course the speakers that we brought didn't work, so the Lover ended up plugging his 808 straight into the hotel alarm clock, which made it all even cooler.

KEEP IN MIND: There's no single, definitive 808 or 909 for the TR-8 to replicate. Each 808/909 is tuned somewhat differently and also has a different tone, due to parts and aging. So any differences exist between real 808s and 909s as well.
In this video I compare the Aira Tr-8 and the Tr-808. This is an unibased comparison. I am not being paid by any companies. Keep in mind that most differences are related to tuning . It is difficult to get the tuning 100 percent. The tuning knobs are VERY sensitive on the TR-8 Each 808 is different and mine is no exception. In fact Mine has a longer decay on the kick than most and my snare and cowbell are tuned high. Also, i did not go through every drum sound because it would require lots of time adjusting volume levels on the fly. one cannot simply mute/unmute the 808. Enjoy!

After playing the tr 808 and tr-8 side by side for 6 months I can honestly say the TR-808 sounds BETTER by a good amount. The 808 has a more random feel due to the analog circuits than the Tr-8s emulation. The Tr-8 sounds a bit samey samey
Also the tr-808 has a harder hitting edgier sound. The Tr-8 sounds more tame and sample-y. The Tr-8 just needs a less polished sound and better random circuit randomization to the algorithm.
