Under hösten 2014 inventerade Länsstyrelsen Skåne bottnar djupare än 20 meter, i Skånes del av Kattegatt.
I videoklippet syns flera arter av mjuka koralldjur, bland annat sjöpenna (Pennatula phosphorea), liten piprensare (Virgularia mirabilis) och läderkorallen död mans hand (Alcyonium digitata). Dessa sticker upp som små fjädrar eller rör från bottnarna, eller något som liknar klumpiga fingrar (gula eller vita) när det gäller död mans hand, därav namnet. Bland kräftdjuren i videon syns flera eremikräftor (Pagurus bernhardus) och havskräftor (Nephrops norvegicus). Bland fiskarna syns gott om plattfisk, ofta sandskädda (Limanda limanda), men också många sjökockar (familj: Callionymidae), ett par torskar (Gadus morhua), ett par pirålar (Myxine glutinose) och en långsmal fisk med det lustiga namnet spetsstjärtat långebarn (Lumpenus lampretaeformis).
De djupa bottnarna i Skånes del av Kattegatt har ofta mjukbottnar med lerigt eller gyttjigt sediment, ibland med inslag av sand, grus eller småsten. På dessa mjuka bottnar finner man de grävande koralldjuren sjöpenna och liten piprensare. Här finns också grävande musslor som t.ex. islandsmusslan (Arctica islandica). Av alla djur på jorden är islandsmusslan det djur som blir äldst, den kan bli över 500 år gammal. Här finns också andra musslor, t.ex. hjärtmusslor och kammusslor av olika arter.
På mindre områden i Skånes delar av Kattegatt finns stenigare partier med större eller mindre stenblock, eller småsteniga och grusblandade bottnar. Här hittar man t.ex. död mans hand, olika rödalger, blåmusslor och hydroider, en sorts nässeldjur släkt med maneterna. Detta är bara några exempel av alla de arter som finns på Kattegatts bottnar.
Metoden som användes vid undersökningen var så kallad dropvideo-teknik. Den går ut på att man, från en båt, sänker ner en rigg, med kameror och strålkastare. Riggen hålls strax över botten och filmar ett antal sträckor inom undersökningsområdet. I det här fallet filmades mer än 300 kortare sträckor (så kallade transekter). Vi letade framför allt efter arterna sjöpenna (Pennatula phosphorea), liten piprensare (Virgularia mirabilis) och havskräfta (Nephrops norvegicus), men alla arter som var möjliga att identifiera noterades.
De tre nämnda arterna är typiska arter för en viss typ av bottenmiljö och ett djursamhälle med det lite kluriga namnet ”sjöpennor och grävande megafauna”. Detta djursamhälle är minskande i svenska vatten och vi behöver kunskap om var det finns för att kunna skydda havsbottnarna på bästa sätt i framtiden. Sverige rapporterar förekomsten av detta djursamhälle till den internationella samarbetsorganisationen OSPAR, som överblickar hur havsmiljöerna mår i Nordöstra Atlanten.
Ett av de största hoten mot de grävande bottendjuren är bottentrålning. I Kattegatt är bottentrålning en vanlig fiskemetod. För att uppnå svenska miljömål och internationella överenskommelser och direktiv, kommer Sverige och andra länder framöver att behöva skydda fler havsområden från bottentrålning och andra miljöpåverkande verksamheter.

It took 8:45 to make the crossing of 45 nautical miles, and we had ideal conditions with a downwind/reach all the way. Kattegat
The Kattegat (Danish: [ˈkʰad̥əɡ̊ad̥]) or Kattegatt (Swedish: [ˈkatːəˈɡatː]) is a 30,000 km2 sea area bounded by the Jutlandic peninsula in the west, the Danish straits islands of Denmark to the south and the provinces of Västergötland, Scania, Halland and Bohuslän in Sweden in the east. The Baltic Sea drains into the Kattegat through the Danish Straits. The sea area is a continuation of the Skagerrak and may be seen as a bay of the Baltic Sea or the North Sea or, as in traditional Scandinavian usage, neither of these.
The Kattegat is a rather shallow sea and can be very difficult and dangerous to navigate, due to the many sandy and stony reefs and tricky currents that often shift. In modern times, artificial channels have been dug, many reefs have been dredged by either sand pumping or stone fishing, and a well-developed light signaling network has been installed, to safeguard the very heavy international traffic of this small sea.
There are several large cities and major ports in the Kattegat, including Aarhus, Gothenburg, Aalborg, Halmstad and Frederikshavn, mentioned by descending size and importance.

It took 8:45 to make the crossing of 45 nautical miles, and we had ideal conditions with a downwind/reach all the way. Take a tour of Tilsandede Kirke in Skagen, Denmark -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. At first glance, the Tilsandede Kirke, located in Skagen, Denmark, isn't much to look at. However, the small, white tower that can be seen is only one part of the whole church. The rest of the church remains buried under the earth, hence the name, which means Sand-Buried Church. The Tilsandede Kirke closed in 1795 after sandy winds continuously built up dunes around the church. Locals used the stones from several parts of the church for other buildings in the area. After much research, the location of the nave and vestry was discovered and marked with stakes for visitors. -
