In this short documentary, I tried to answer some of the common questions that I usually get about shipping. The footage I took myself using fairly basic cameras that I could fit in my pocket while I was on the job as a deckhand. The story follows me on a six month journey around the world on a container ship which was on a run between New York and Singapore via the Suez Canal. This was my first time going to sea on a large ship so everything was relatively new to me. I have been on many ships since and will continue to ship out for the foreseeable future. Thanks for watching.

The United States Merchant Marine is the fleet of U.S. civilian-owned merchant vessels, operated by either the government or the private sector, that engage in commerce or transportation of goods and services in and out of the navigable waters of the United States. The Merchant Marine is responsible for transporting cargo and passengers during peacetime. In time of war, the Merchant Marine is capable of being an auxiliary to the Navy, and can be called upon to deliver military personnel and materiel for the military. The Merchant Marine, however, does not have a role in combat, although a merchant mariner has a responsibility to protect cargo carried aboard his ship.
Merchant mariners move cargo and passengers between nations and within the United States, and operate and maintain deep-sea merchant ships, tugboats, towboats, ferries, dredges, excursion vessels, and other waterborne craft on the oceans, the Great Lakes, rivers, canals, harbors, and other waterways.
As of 2006, the United States merchant fleet numbered 465 ships and approximately 100,000 people work on U.S. flag merchant ships. Seven hundred ships owned by American interests but registered, or flagged, in other countries are not included in this number.
The federal government maintains fleets of merchant ships via organizations such as Military Sealift Command and the National Defense Reserve Fleet. In 2004, the federal government employed approximately 5% of all American water transportation workers.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, various laws fundamentally changed the course of American merchant shipping. These laws put an end to common practices such as flogging and shanghaiing, and increased shipboard safety and living standards. The first wartime role of an identifiable United States merchant marine took place on June 12, 1775, in and around Machias, Maine. A group of citizens, hearing the news from Concord and Lexington, captured the British schooner HMS Margaretta...
Word of this revolt reached Boston, where the Continental Congress and the various colonies issued Letters of Marque to privateers. The privateers interrupted the British supply chain all along the eastern seaboard of the United States and across the Atlantic Ocean. These actions by the privateers predate both the United States Coast Guard and the United States Navy, which were formed in 1790 and 1775, respectively.
19th and 20th centuries
The merchant marine was active in subsequent wars, from the Confederate commerce raiders of the American Civil War, to the assaults on Allied commerce in the First and in the Second World Wars. 3.1 million tons of merchant ships were lost in World War II. Mariners died at a rate of 1 in 24, which was the highest rate of casualties of any service...
Merchant shipping also played its role in the wars in Vietnam and Korea. During the Korean War, the number of ships under charter grew from 6 to 255. In September 1950, when the U.S. Marine Corps went ashore at Incheon, 13 Navy cargo ships, 26 chartered American, and 34 Japanese-manned merchant ships, under the operational control of Military Sea Transportation Service, participated.
During the Vietnam War, ships crewed by civilian seamen carried 95% of the supplies used by the American armed forces. Many of these ships sailed into combat zones under fire. The SS Mayaguez incident involved the capture of mariners from the American merchant ship SS Mayaguez.

A merchant navy or merchant marine is the fleet of merchant vessels that are registered in a country, which varies in capacity. Seafarers on merchant vessels, who hold various military-like ranks and responsibilities and are sometimes members of various maritime trade unions, are required by the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers to carry Merchant Mariner's Documents. King George V bestowed the title of the "Merchant Navy" on the British merchant shipping fleets following their service in the First World War, however a number of other nations have since adopted the title. The following is a partial list of the merchant navies or merchant marines of various countries. In many countries the fleet's proper name is simply the capitalized version of the common noun.
The British Merchant Navy comprises the British merchant ships that transport cargo and people during time of peace and war.
For long periods of the last millennium, the Merchant Navy had the largest merchant fleet in the world, but it has slipped down the rankings. Today, there are 429 ships of 1,000 Gross Tonnes (GT) or over, making a total of 9,181,284 GT (9,566,275 tons deadweight (DWT)). These are split into the following types: bulk carrier 18, cargo 55, chemical tanker 48, container 134, liquefied gas 11, passenger 12, passenger/cargo 64, petroleum tanker 40, refrigerated cargo 19, roll on/roll off 25, vehicle carrier 3. There are also 446 ships registered in other countries, and 202 foreign-owned ships registered in the UK. (2005 CIA estimate)

In this short documentary, I tried to answer some of the common questions that I usually get about shipping. The footage I took myself using fairly basic cameras that I could fit in my pocket while I was on the job as a deckhand. The story follows me on a six month journey around the world on a container ship which was on a run between New York and Singapore via the Suez Canal. This was my first time going to sea on a large ship so everything was relatively new to me. I have been on many ships since and will continue to ship out for the foreseeable future. The first wartime role of an identifiable United States merchant marine took place on June 12, 1775, in and around Machias, Maine. A group of citizens, hearing the news from Concord and Lexington, captured the British schooner HMS Margaretta...
Word of this revolt reached Boston, where the Continental Congress and the various colonies issued Letters of Marque to privateers. The privateers interrupted the British supply chain all along the eastern seaboard of the United States and across the Atlantic Ocean. These actions by the privateers predate both the United States Coast Guard and the United States Navy, which were formed in 1790 and 1775, respectively.
19th and 20th centuries
The merchant marine was active in subsequent wars, from the Confederate commerce raiders of the American Civil War, to the assaults on Allied commerce in the First and in the Second World Wars. 3.1 million tons of merchant ships were lost in World War II. Mariners died at a rate of 1 in 24, which was the highest rate of casualties of any service...
Merchant shipping also played its role in the wars in Vietnam and Korea. During the Korean War, the number of ships under charter grew from 6 to 255. In September 1950, when the U.S. Marine Corps went ashore at Incheon, 13 Navy cargo ships, 26 chartered American, and 34 Japanese-manned merchant ships, under the operational control of Military Sea Transportation Service, participated.
During the Vietnam War, ships crewed by civilian seamen carried 95% of the supplies used by the American armed forces. Many of these ships sailed into combat zones under fire. The SS Mayaguez incident involved the capture of mariners from the American merchant ship SS Mayaguez.

The Maritime Administration also provides training vessels and other support to six state maritime academies, which are in Texas, California, New York, Michigan, Maine, and Massachusetts. These academies all provide four-year undergraduate programs, and their graduates find employment as licensed mariners and in shoreside occupations such as shipyard management and transportation logistics. We also are active in the current rapid growth of maritime education at the high school and middle school levels.
We also support continuing education for current mariners. Information for and about current mariners may be found in the Mariners section of this web site. We have developed guidelines and curricula for security training for a variety of people who work around ports and ships, and details about that training may be found in this section of our site.

Until its 3 major container vessel lenders, Danaos Corporation, Zodiac Maritime and Eastern Pacific Shipping complete the charter renegotiations with HMM. Zodiac Maritime played hardballs at the 2nd round but it showed positive way at the 3rd round renegotiations a few days ago. About 65% container carrier lenders agreed to lower the charterage for HMM but 35% Bulk carrier and Tanker carrier lenders are still under the charter cut negotiation. If the around 35% bulk carrier and Tanker carrier lenders agree to lower the charterage, Korea Develop Bank, creditor may take over HMM next month. But If the other kinds of 35% ship lenders won’t agree to lower the charterage for HMM. It might go to the court receivers... -

Joseph Elmo McKeone's interview for the Veterans History Project at Atlanta History Center
Catalog number: VIS 201.0234 In this interview, Joseph McKeone recalls his service in the Army and Merchant Marine during World War II. He was underweight at the time of his physical and told to come back. He later entered the Army Reserve Corps and was accepted. He spent time as a trainee in a Veterans Administration hospital and then sent to dental school because the Army needed dentists. He was soon discharged because the Army had too many dentists, so he joined the Merchant Marine. He was sent to pharmacist's mate school. One weekend he went home with a friend and met Judy Garland and Sonja Henie. He recalls his voyage across the North Atlantic in rough seas. Until its 3 major container vessel lenders, Danaos Corporation, Zodiac Maritime and Eastern Pacific Shipping complete the charter renegotiations with HMM. Zodiac Maritime played hardballs at the 2nd round but it showed positive way at the 3rd round renegotiations a few days ago. About 65% container carrier lenders agreed to lower the charterage for HMM but 35% Bulk carrier and Tanker carrier lenders are still under the charter cut negotiation. If the around 35% bulk carrier and Tanker carrier lenders agree to lower the charterage, Korea Develop Bank, creditor may take over HMM next month. But If the other kinds of 35% ship lenders won’t agree to lower the charterage for HMM. It might go to the court receivership. Market situation seems to help Shipping companies who help themselves. On April 19, 2016, Maersk announced a $550 per teu general rate increase for 1 May, 2016 but Container Indexes started to rise from 21 April, 2016 at the result of 14, 15, 16 April consecutive earthquakes in Japan, Philippine, Peru and Ecuador.(RING of FIRE)
Hapag-Lloyd, one of the global shipping companies told its customers that from 1 May its westbound FAK rates would be $925 per 20ft, $1,750 per 40ft and $1,850 per 40ft high-cube. It said volatility on the Asia-Europe trades had resulted in freight rates falling to “unsustainable levels”, and said the rate restoration was necessary “to avoid service disruptions in the supply chain or services being withdrawn”. Ring of Fire may be the sign of V shaped recovery for shippers business.

ST:MM is a good concept. I remember the days of Trade Wars:2002, and how much fun I had, to the point that 80% of my BBS Time was taken up in TW2k2, of the remaining 20%, at least 90% of THAT was taken up with Solar Realms Elite and Barren Realms Elite, but that's another story entirely.
This is a good concept gone bad.
