Bottom Longline Fishing: Discover the story of how halibut and groundfish are harvested
Bottom Longline Fishing: Discover the story of how halibut and groundfish are harvested
Watch how fish harvesters use a bottom longline to catch Pacific halibut, sablefish, rockfish and other groundfish. Baited hooks are attached to a line that is anchored to the ocean floor. A longline can be from one to three miles (1.6 to 5 km) long and have up to 2,000 hooks. The halibut fishery is part of an integrated multi-species fishery in B.C. that allows fish harvesters to keep several species when fishing for halibut. In B.C., many different species are caught on bottom longlines. These include halibut, sablefish, dogfish, lingcod, flatfish and rockfish. About 150 to 180 vessels actively participate in the halibut fishery each year. The vessels range in size from 35 to 80 feet (20 to 25 metres). For more info on the B.C. Pacific Halibut fishery, visit this link: http://thisfish.info/fishery/pacific-halibut-longline-bc/ CREDITS: Producers: Goodforks Editing: Blue Chip Productions Funding support for this video provided, in part, by the BC Government's Buy Local Program; delivered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of BC with funding from the BC Ministry of Agriculture.- published: 07 Mar 2014

Barotrauma in Gulf of Maine Groundfish Release Device Testing: Cusk Trials
Barotrauma in Gulf of Maine Groundfish Release Device Testing: Cusk Trials
Cusk are a recreational groundfish species in the Gulf of Maine that exhibit severe barotrauma symptoms. Barotrauma is physical damage caused by a change in pressure. This is caused by the pressure change between the deep waters where they dwell and the surface. When some fish are brought to the surface, they are unable to regulate the volume of air in the swim bladder resulting in a rupture that can send air into tissues and other spaces (such as behind the eyes). In certain species, the swimbladder may not rupture, but as it expands, it may force internal organs to move and can result in fish having these organs forced out of their mouths. We have begun studying at-depth release of groundfish species like cusk to reduce the effects of barotrauma and released individuals. This video demonstrates how two recreational release devices work to return cusk to the approximate depth of their initial capture for release. Funds for this research were awarded through a West Marine Blue Future grant. GoPro cameras were used to film for this research, and were bought with the Blue Future grant monies. We do not endorse, nor are we endorsed, by GoPro.- published: 24 Apr 2014
