Leucadia National

Leucadia National Corporation is an American holding company that, through its subsidiaries, engages in mining & drilling services, telecommunications, healthcare services, manufacturing, banking and lending, real estate, and winery businesses with a market cap of about $8.0 billion as of June 15, 2011. Largest current investments include Jefferies. The company is sometimes called a "baby Berkshire Hathaway" for the wide range of its holdings.

History

Leucadia executives Ian Cumming and Joseph S. Steinberg both graduated in the same Harvard Business School Class of 1970. They joined Leucadia around 1979. Ian Cumming (a Vancouver native) and Joseph Steinberg each own about 13% of Leucadia's shares.

Leucadia is headquartered in New York City, but has additional offices in Salt Lake City, Utah. The company's name comes from the seaside town in Southern California and was chosen randomly after several other choices were rejected during the incorporation process. Cumming and Steinberg spotted the sign along the freeway and suggested it as an alternative.

Leucadia State Beach, also known as Beacon's Beach, is a protected beach of California, United States, in Encinitas. It is operated as Beacon’s Beach by the city under a 20-year agreement with California Department of Parks and Recreation. It's a popular spot for swimming, surfing, fishing, and other beach activities. The 10.6-acre (4.3 ha) site was established in 1949.

Leucadia is a beach community located in the coastal city of Encinitas, California. The relatively secluded beaches of Leucadia lend it a prominence in Southern California surf culture and as such, Encinitas is recognized globally as one of the most quintessential surf towns.

History

The name Leucadia is of Greek origin as its namesake, Lefkada (Leucadia), is one of the Ionian Islands. The founding of the community is often attributed to English spiritualists seeking freedom of worship. Early in the community's history a development company based in San Diego gave Leucadia and its streets their Roman-Greco names of which include: Hymettus, Neptune, Phoebe, Daphne. While the developers had plans for a grand resort, the Hotel Apollo, such plans never came to fruition.

Geography

Leucadia faces the Pacific Ocean. The community is set on a series of bluffs that stretch along much of the length of the North County coastline, a region of San Diego County. Its beaches are located below steep vertical cliffs lending them a relative seclusion.

Jefferies Group

Jefferies LLC is an American global investment bank and institutional securities firm headquartered in New York. The firm provides clients with capital markets and financial advisory services, institutional brokerage, securities research, and asset management. This includes mergers and acquisitions, restructuring, and other financial advisory services.

On November 12, 2012, Jefferies announced its merger with Leucadia, its largest shareholder. At that time, Leucadia common shares were trading at $21.14 per share. As of December 31, 2015, Leucadia shares were trading at $17.39 per share. Jefferies remains independent and is the largest operating company within Leucadia. On March 1, 2013, along with the closing of the merger, Jefferies & Company, Inc. was converted to a limited liability company and re-branded Jefferies LLC.
