The Casa Mila of
Barcelona, also known as "
La Pedrera "building is a modernist who is the
Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona, at the corner of Calle de
Provence. It was the last civil works designed by
Antoni Gaudí and was built between the years
1906 and 1910.
The Casa Mila of Barcelona is the result of two buildings that are structured around two courtyards that illuminate the new levels: basement, ground floor, mezzanine, main floor (or noble), four upper floors and an attic. The basement was used as a garage, main floor residence of Mr.
Milan, a flat 1,323 m², and the rest spread over 20 homes for rent. The resulting plant is shaped like "8" asymmetrical shape and size of the different courts. The loft that housed the washing and drying, form a space insulation of the building and also determine the different levels of the roof.
The Casa Mila of Barcelona is a single organism, where the external form has continued in the interior. The apartments include the ceilings with plaster reliefs of great dynamism, the woodwork of the doors, windows and furniture (sadly now defunct), and the design of hydraulic pavement and various ornaments.
Regarding the structure, Casa Mila of Barcelona is characterized by its stone facade self-supporting, ie shareholder of the functions of bearing wall connecting the inner structure of each floor by means of iron beams curves surrounding the perimeter of each floor. This construction system allows large openings in the front, which makes it easier to light homes and the structuring the different levels with open plan, so that all walls can be demolished without affecting the stability of the building. This allowed change the partitions and modify at will, without problems, the interior layout of homes.
As paving the Casa Mila of Barcelona,
Gaudi used a model parquet forms of square timber with two colors, as well as a hydraulic pavement of hexagonal pieces of blue and sea motifs that had originally been designed to the Batllo house but had not been used to recover and
Gaudí's La Pedrera. The wax was designed in gray
Juan Bertran, under the supervision of Gaudí "touched up with their own fingers," in the words of the builder
Joseph Bayó.
Gaudi gave the city a geological landscape, a sea cliff, an abstract sculpture with organic shapes enormous sizes. The Casa Mila of Barcelona is in fact the triumph of the curved line, which imposes a monumental beauty that was never seen before.
The Casa Mila of Barcelona is a reflection of the artistic fulfillment of Gaudi: belongs to the naturalistic stage (first decade of the twentieth century ), during which the architect perfected his personal style, inspired by the organic forms of nature.
Although the most spectacular and clear favorite was the Casa Mila of Barcelona, the jury ruled stating that "despite being finished facades, a long way from being fully completed, finalized and in perfect condition assessment '. The 1910 winner was the Samanillo
Perez, now home of
Equestrian Circle.
The Casa Mila of Barcelona was declared a Historic-Artistic
Monument of
National Character in
1969, and in
1984 UNESCO included it in the
Place Heritage Site "
Works of Antoni Gaudí ", along with the
Güell Palace, the Güell
Park and the Crypt
Colonia Güell.
Organic forms, the Casa Mila of Barcelona undoubtedly evokes the nature : several scholars have perceived in ways reminiscent Pedrera Fra cliffs Guerau in
Prades mountains near
Reus, the torrent of Pareis north of Mallorca and
Sant Miquel del Fai in
Lightning Ridge, all places visited by Gaudí.
The Casa Mila of Barcelona has three facades, one on the
Paseo de Gracia, one in the street Provence, and one that makes chamfer, following the usual scheme designed by
Cerdà Eixample. However, the three have a formal, stylistic continuity for its sinuous and undulating, like a rock shaped by the waves.
