Close up of Yanukovich entering doors of parliament STORYLINE: President Viktor Yushchenko left Ukrainians hanging in limbo after a midnight Wednesday deadline for deciding on whether to accept his chief rival Viktor Yanukovich as prime minister passed with no word on what he would do. The deadline's expiration puts Ukraine into another round of the political uncertainty that has dragged on since parliamentary elections more than four months ago. That election left no party with a majority of seats. As the deadline passed, Yushchenko and Yanukovych were in a meeting, an apparent indication that the president was seeking compromise. "I am convinced that mutual understanding of the political forces that represent various regions of Ukraine will be the best way to resolve this parliamentary crisis," Yushchenko said before Wednesday evening's meeting. Yushchenko has been pushing for the agreement as a way to ensure that his pro-Western and reformist policies remain unchanged even if Yanukovich were to become premier in a government made up of his pro-Russian party, Communists and Socialists. Wrangling such an agreement from Yanukovich could also pave the way for Yushchenko's bloc, Our Ukraine, to join the new coalition in parliament and the government, rather than being stranded in opposition. But in an apparent bid to increase the pressure on the Kremlin-backed politician to give way, the President started consultations regarding the dissolution of parliament. Earlier Wednesday, supporters of Yanukovich's Party of Regions, dressed mostly in blue, continued to gather outside parliament. "At the moment we have a chance to construct effective system of power by democratic means in order to form wide consensus of opinions on solution of many problems of the state," Yanukovich told them. Yushchenko was expected to either dissolve the parliament before midnight Wednesday local time (2100 GMT) or submit the candidature of Yanukovich to the parliament for confirmation as prime minister. But deputies of the Ukrainian parliament closed the special parliamentary session eight minutes before midnight after Yushchenko failed to give a rumoured televised address. The deadline for Yushchenko to decide whether to forward Yanukovich's nomination to parliament is stipulated by the constitution. But what must happen if he fails to forward the nomination or outright rejects it is unclear.
