In this video, Dr Greg Martin talks about his experiences working at the World Health Organization (both the up-sides and the down-sides) and discusses one or two important issues with respect to the application process.
Global health (and public health) is truly multidisciplinary and leans on epidemiology, health economics, health policy, statistics, ethics, demography.... the list goes on and on. This YouTube channel is here to provide you with some teaching and information on these topics. I've also posted some videos on how to find work in the global health space and how to raise money or get a grant for your projects.

The World Health Organization was established on the first World Health Day in April 7th 1948 in Geneva Switzerland. The 1949 budget was 47 million dollars and in 2012, the budget was a around $4B. Most of the cash is voluntarily given.WHO is partnered with 473 NGOs, 189 of which is "Official." With the help of other NGOs and Governments WHO has positively changed everything from this staggering list.
Of special note are Polio, Smallpox, and HIV. Polio has nearly been decadecimated. Smallpox was completely eradicated which was the first time ever that a disease was wiped out. Between 2009 and 2015, WHO aims to reduce HIV in people ages 15-24 by 50%, in children by 90%, and reduce HIV related deaths by 25%.
WHO conducts the "World Health Survey" with 400,000 participants over 70 countries. They also publish the "World Health Report" and created the WHO surgical checklist.
If I have a list for this video, so should surgeons poking a knife in someone's head.
Controversies are plentiful for an organization this large. The WHO denounced the Roman Catholic church for opposing condom use. They created a report suggesting that sugar should be less than 10% of our diet. They also made an agreement with International Atomic Energy Agency such that each organization must consult with the other when it comes to nuclear health and safety. Finally, WHO declared a swine flu pandemic in 2009 but most don't agree that it was pandemic-like.
In 2012, there were 194 member states including all of the United Nations except Liechtenstein. What up Liechtenstein?
The legislative and supreme body of WHO is the World Health Assembly located in Geneva. There are 34 technically qualified people in the executive board. Below the assembly are five Regional Offices ran by regional committees consisting of health department heads of multiple governments. Each office is a meeting place for surrounding countries. Finally, there are 147 country offices usually located in capitals that advise governments on health issues.
WHO employs 8500 people worldwide and they don't hire smokers. There are goodwill ambassadors like the famous Jet Li, Nancy Brinker, Peng Liyuan, Yohei Sasakawa, and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and some guy named Craig.

The World Health Organization (WHO) have published a report based on 800 studies stating that red and processed meats, such as bacon and sausage, cause cancers such as colorectal, prostate, and pancreatic cancer. Red meat is now considered as possibly carcinogenic to humans and a Group 2A carcinogen, such as acrylamide, lead, and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Processed meat is now considered as carcinogenic to humans and a Group 1 carcinogen, such as arsenic, asbestos, and tobacco. The WHO have also stated that "each 50 gram portion of processed meat eaten DAILY increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 18%"

At its worst, depression can be a frightening, debilitating condition. Millions of people around the world live with depression. Many of these individuals and their families are afraid to talk about their struggles, and don't know where to turn for help. However, depression is largely preventable and treatable. Recognizing depression and seeking help is the first and most critical towards recovery.

This interview with Professor Milton P. Siegel, who for 24 years was the Assistant Director General of the World Health Organization, was recorded in 1992 by Dr. Stephen D. Mumford, President of the Center for Research on Population and Security. This is the first time that it has been made available to the public.
Because of his position and the length of his tenure, Professor Siegel is considered among the world's foremost authorities on the development of World Health Organization policy. In this interview, he reveals the influence of the Vatican in shaping WHO policy, particularly in blocking adoption of the concept that overpopulation is a grave public-health threat -- a concept which, in WHO's early years, enjoyed a broad consensus among member countries.
Without this separation of population dynamics from WHO public-health policy, the Vatican would have found it much more difficult to subsequently manipulate governments on such issues as family planning and abortion. National leaders would have been able to refer to the international consensus, as demonstrated by WHO policy. WHO, they could have insisted, has determined that family planning and abortion -- like clean water, good nutrition, and immunizations -- are necessary to protect public health.
Professor Siegel decided to speak out on the subject. As he was involved in the WHO at an early stage, his personal experience provides ample evidence that the Vatican influenced WHO policy development from the outset, during the early period of the Interim Commission in 1946. In its 63-year history, this international health body has had a deplorable record in family planning. Its commitment has been minuscule, and even today family planning accounts for only a tiny fraction of its budget.
Professor Siegel joined the World Health Organization in 1946, when it was still in its formative stages -- under the umbrella of the United Nations, created just the year before. Because of his earlier work in North America and the Middle East, he was asked, in effect, to be one of WHO's "founding fathers". So he came on board on the senior staff of the Interim Commission. Dr. Brock Chisholm of Canada was the Executive Director of the Commission, which set up the permanent organization with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Dr. Chisholm was chosen to be WHO's first Director General.

National health authorities, WHO and partners are working around the clock to contain the Ebola outbreak affecting Sierra Leone’s eastern districts of Kailahun and Kenema. Kailahun is situated close to the border with Guinea and specifically the Gueckedou region where the outbreak was first declared in March this year. The first confirmed Ebola cases in Kailahun were reported on 25 May. This video was produced in August 2014.

The World Health Organization was established on the first World Health Day in April 7th 1948 in Geneva Switzerland. The 1949 budget was 47 million dollars and in 2012, the budget was a around $4B. Most of the cash is voluntarily given.WHO is partnered with 473 NGOs, 189 of which is "Official." With the help of other NGOs and Governments WHO has positively changed everything from this staggering list. Of special note are Polio, Smallpox, and HIV. Polio has nearly been decadecimated. Smallpox was completely eradicated which was the first time ever that a disease was wiped out. Between 2009 and 2015, WHO aims to reduce HIV in people ages 15-24 by 50%, in children by 90%, and reduce HIV related deaths by 25%. The World Health Organization (WHO) have published a report based on 800 studies stating that red and processed meats, such as bacon and sausage, cause cancers such as colorectal, prostate, and pancreatic cancer. Red meat is now considered as possibly carcinogenic to humans and a Group 2A carcinogen, such as acrylamide, lead, and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. National health authorities, WHO and partners are working around the clock to contain the Ebola outbreak affecting Sierra Leone’s eastern districts of Kailahun and Kenema. It was established on 7 April 1948, with its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. WHO is a member of the United Nations Development Group. Its predecessor, the Health Organization, was an agency of the League of Nations. The main responsibility was to help anybody in need of medical assistance. Finally, WHO declared a swine flu pandemic in 2009 but most don't agree that it was pandemic-like.
In 2012, there were 194 member states including all of the United Nations except Liechtenstein. What up Liechtenstein?
The legislative and supreme body of WHO is the World Health Assembly located in Geneva. There are 34 technically qualified people in the executive board. Below the assembly are five Regional Offices ran by regional committees consisting of health department heads of multiple governments. Each office is a meeting place for surrounding countries. Finally, there are 147 country offices usually located in capitals that advise governments on health issues.
WHO employs 8500 people worldwide and they don't hire smokers. There are goodwill ambassadors like the famous Jet Li, Nancy Brinker, Peng Liyuan, Yohei Sasakawa, and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and some guy named Craig.

The World Health Organization (WHO) have published a report based on 800 studies stating that red and processed meats, such as bacon and sausage, cause cancers such as colorectal, prostate, and pancreatic cancer. Red meat is now considered as possibly carcinogenic to humans and a Group 2A carcinogen, such as acrylamide, lead, and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Processed meat is now considered as carcinogenic to humans and a Group 1 carcinogen, such as arsenic, asbestos, and tobacco. The WHO have also stated that "each 50 gram portion of processed meat eaten DAILY increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 18%"

Mumford, President of the Center for Research on Population and Security. This is the first time that it has been made available to the public.
Because of his position and the length of his tenure, Professor Siegel is considered among the world's foremost authorities on the development of World Health Organization policy. In this interview, he reveals the influence of the Vatican in shaping WHO policy, particularly in blocking adoption of the concept that overpopulation is a grave public-health threat -- a concept which, in WHO's early years, enjoyed a broad consensus among member countries.
Without this separation of population dynamics from WHO public-health policy, the Vatican would have found it much more difficult to subsequently manipulate governments on such issues as family planning and abortion. National leaders would have been able to refer to the international consensus, as demonstrated by WHO policy. WHO, they could have insisted, has determined that family planning and abortion -- like clean water, good nutrition, and immunizations -- are necessary to protect public health.
Professor Siegel decided to speak out on the subject. As he was involved in the WHO at an early stage, his personal experience provides ample evidence that the Vatican influenced WHO policy development from the outset, during the early period of the Interim Commission in 1946. In its 63-year history, this international health body has had a deplorable record in family planning. Its commitment has been minuscule, and even today family planning accounts for only a tiny fraction of its budget.
Professor Siegel joined the World Health Organization in 1946, when it was still in its formative stages -- under the umbrella of the United Nations, created just the year before. Because of his earlier work in North America and the Middle East, he was asked, in effect, to be one of WHO's "founding fathers". So he came on board on the senior staff of the Interim Commission. Dr. Brock Chisholm of Canada was the Executive Director of the Commission, which set up the permanent organization with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Dr. Chisholm was chosen to be WHO's first Director General.

Outdoor air pollution has been officially classified as carcinogenic by the cancer arm of the World Health Organisation.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) said air pollution from traffic and industrial fumes was a definite cause of lung cancer and also linked to bladder cancer. The strong verdict from IARC, a cautious body that pronounces only when the evidence is strong, will put pressure on governments to take action.
"The air we breathe has become polluted with a mixture of cancer-causing substances," said Dr Kurt Straif, head of the IARC monographs section, which assesses evidence and publishes official warnings. "We now know that outdoor air pollution is not only a major risk to health in general, but also a leading environmental cause of cancer deaths."
Air pollution is already known to increase the risks for other diseases, including heart and respiratory disease. The numbers of those exposed to air pollution have risen rapidly as countries have industrialised. The most recent data suggests there were 233,000 deaths from lung cancer caused by air pollution around the world in 2010.
IARC monitors studies on cancer risks and issues official monographs when it has come to conclusions about a potential carcinogen. It has put out warnings about individual chemicals in the air. Diesel engine exhaust, solvents, metals and dusts have all been labelled carcinogenic. This is the first time it has classified air pollution in general as a cause of cancer.
"Our task was to evaluate the air everyone breathes rather than focus on specific air pollutants," said Dr Dana Loomis, deputy head of the monographs section.
"The results from the reviewed studies point in the same direction: the risk of developing lung cancer is significantly increased in people exposed to air pollution."
The main sources of air pollution are traffic, power stations, industrial and agricultural emissions and heating and cooking fumes from the home, the IARC said. The levels of air pollution vary from place to place, but every country in the world was affected and should do something about it, it said.
"Classifying outdoor air pollution as carcinogenic to humans is an important step," said the IARC director, Dr Christopher Wild. "There are effective ways to reduce air pollution and, given the scale of the exposure affecting people worldwide, this report should send a strong signal to the international community to take action without further delay."
