From Wikipedia: The balance beam is an artistic gymnastics apparatus, as well as the event performed using the apparatus. Both the apparatus and the event are sometimes simply referred to as "beam". The English abbreviation for the event in gymnastics scoring is BB. The beam is a small, thin beam which is typically raised from the floor on a leg or stand at both ends. The balance beam is only performed by female gymnasts. Beams are usually made of leather like material. Balance beams used in international gymnastics competitions must conform to the guidelines and specifications set forth by the International Gymnastics Federation Apparatus Norms brochure. Several companies manufacture and sell beams, including AAI (USA), Jannsen and Fritsen (Europe) and Acromat (Australia). Most gymnastics schools purchase and use balance beams that meet the FIG's standards, but some may also use beams with carpeted surfaces for practice situations. While learning new skills, gymnasts often work on low beams that have the same dimensions and surface of regulation apparatus, but are set a very short distance from the ground. They may also work on practice beams, mini beams, road beams, or even lines on a mat. Originally, the beam surface was plain polished wood. In earlier years, some gymnasts competed on a beam made of basketball-like material. However, this type of beam was eventually banned due to its extreme slipperiness. Since the 1980s, beams have been covered in leather or suede. In addition, they are now also sprung to accommodate the stress of high-difficulty tumbling and dance skills. Blakely is not a very adventurous eater, and as a result, she chose to wear most of the food choices as opposed to eating them. Whitney seldom backs down from a challenge, and as a result, she wound up eating such tasty items as sardines and dog food. The girls understand that this challenge was very wasteful and that there are many people in the world that do not have enough food to eat. The girls are grateful that hunger is not an issue in their lives. Following this challenge, each girl filled a bag of canned goods to be donated at their church. Whitney and her new teammates are at the 2016 Courtney Kupets Pink Invitational Gymnastics Meet in Savannah, Georgia. It’s also Whitney’s Birthday! The whole family packed up the car and headed towards the coast for this awesome event. Again, Whitney did great! She started on the balance beam (a scary place to start) and was solid as a rock…she scored a 9.65. From there it was on to the floor exercise. Things don’t always run smoothly…and that was the case on floor for Whitney on this day. The first few seconds of her floor music did not play! And when it did start playing, it was very quiet. Once Whitney realized her music had started, she had to speed everything up in order to catch up to her music. She did pretty well, but had a slip at the end of her final tumbling pass…she scored a 9.3. Next was the dreaded vault. Whitney is almost ready to compete the level 8 yurchenko vault, but since it was the last meet before state, there was no reason to take a chance on getting hurt again. Whitney did a great front handspring vault and scored an 8.6 with a 9.0 start value. Finally it was off to the uneven bars. Whitney had a great bars routine even though she didn’t quite nail her clear hip or her handstand. She managed to stick the landing and scored a 9.55. Whitney ended up scoring a 37.1 which was good enough to win the all around title. She also won first place on bars and beam. Whitney’s team won first place in the team competition as well. To celebrate, the whole family headed out for a dinner cruise on the Savannah River. All the kids had a great time busting out their dance moves to the tunes of the riverboat’s DJ.
